Recently Sebastian Contursi, advisor to WBA junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana, reached out to share some of the latest developments with his fighter. One of the more imposing figures in the sport, Maidana is coming off of a 4th round knockout over Petr Petrov that took place on September 23rd in his native Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Maidana is a fan favorite because of his unrelenting style and brute power, having endeared himself to American audiences with a string of electrifying HBO performances against the likes of Victor Ortiz, Victor Cayo, Amir Khan, and most recently Erik Morales, who he had a hell of a time with inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as he bit down and pulled out a close unanimous decision.

Contursi revealed that he recently met up with Richard Schaefer, CEO of Maidana’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions, and that they agreed that February of next year seems like a good time for Maidana’s return to the States. But while a rematch with Morales, who recently captured the vacant WBC crown with a 10th round TKO over brave Pablo Cesar Cano, figures to be lively, it doesn’t seem like the fight will be coming off.

“Erik Morales talked a lot about Marcos not wanting to give him the rematch, which is not true unless he thinks he is the one who rules the sport,” Contursi said reflecting back to the two fighters’ clash this past April. “Maidana would fight Morales again as long as it is under logical terms. That includes the proper time to prepare and a purse according to the fight. Maidana had launched a challenge for a rematch to be held in December, however it seems that Morales changed his mind.”

The fight with Khan was also intriguing, as Maidana bounced back from a first round knockdown after a liver shot to eventually turn the tide of the fight while rocking his British foe repeatedly in the tenth round. It made for an intense atmosphere but while Maidana would love a chance to redeem himself, Contursi sees it as another fight that is far from realistic at this point and as such, he is eyeing other options.

“We all know that Amir Khan wants no part of Maidana again, even though he claims that no one wants to fight him, which is a big lie. So, with that scenario, Marcos is willing to go up to 147 pounds,” Contursi revealed.

There’s no shortage of talent in the welterweight class and just last month Floyd Mayweather shook the division up with his knockout over Victor Ortiz. In a shocking scenario, Ortiz was docked a point in the fourth round after deliberately head-butting Floyd, only to be knocked out moments later as he was caught off guard with a pair of punches he never saw coming after trying to embrace Mayweather to show his remorse.

Maidana took in the action and was practically appauled at how his former nemesis was acting.

“The other day, while watching the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight with Marcos, he said ‘Man, come on! Ortiz is scared like hell. I would never give a kiss to Mayweather or any other rival that I have in front of me. I'd pressure Floyd like no one else did so far. I might get stopped in the process, but trust me, I'd bring a real war to him. Bring me Mayweather and you'll see,’” Contursi continued.

Contursi went on to add that if a Mayweather fight wasn’t feasible, that Maidana would be open to a rematch with Ortiz or a bout with IBF champion Andre Berto.

Maidana stopped Ortiz in six wild rounds in June of 2009 in one of the year’s biggest upsets. Ortiz would produce the biggest victory of his career this past April when he scored two knockdowns on his way to defeating Berto, who himself bounced back on September 3rd to score a 5th round TKO over Jan Zaveck after busting up the German fighter's right eye.

Contursi says that Schaefer is exploring all options for Maidana and expects to hear something in the coming weeks on his next move.

Berto vs Maidana would be a good fan-friendly, action packed fight. He ain't ready for Floyd but it would be fun to watch Floyd pick him apart.

I could see Berto trying to brawl and getting knocked the fuck out. Maidana even knows he can't beat Floyd, but he would give all he gots for that check... I can't knock that.

Man, go fight Erik Morales again and stop worrying about Amir Khan.

And never, ever think about fighting Floyd Mayweather. He would be lucky to not get popped by Berto.

yeah Berto would beat him...too fast & power...next Maidana for his style does not have a Margarito or Angulo type chin....

I doubt they make a Morales rematch they trying to milk Erik's career a little longer $$$$$$$

IDK about 147 for Maidana I think alot of cats could/would beat him...140 he has better matchups IMO...

Berto doesn't use his advantages. He is way faster than Ortiz, but was damn near going shot for shot with dude. :smh:

I would like a Morales rematch cause I thought Morales won, but to be honest Maidana gains nothing from beating Morales. I didn't even know why they fought in the first place.

At 147... besides Pac and Floyd... shit, I give him a chance with everyone else.

With his fight with Morales being so close and Morales going on to win another title, a rematch is warranted. It's a much more marketable fight than watching him get beat by Khan again and way more than any fight at welterweight.
But if not Morales, there are plenty of good fights at 140.

Maybe, I might be off cause I didn't think people were still checking for Morales' fights. I guess I might be tripping cause Mexican fans will ride with a motherfucker into their 50's fighting in barns next to chicken coops. Probably cause them motherfuckers will still eat a punch like it's nothing even at that point.

:lol:True. I think his good win on the Mayweather undercard after his strong showing against Maidana has extended his run. Once he stopped trying to be a featherweight or a lightweight, he looks a lot stronger.

He has that old head bop and snail punches... I guess if the motherfucker still wants to fight... that is cool, but I like to think of the old footage of Morales and this cat that shows up only has the stance and takes a punch like the Morales I remember.

At least B-Hop still looks some what like his old self. He slowed down a bit too, but he found the right weight to stay relevant without looking old against his comp.

Yeah, I think Erik waited too late to move up and took too many bad beatings and lost some fights he shouldn't have either fought or fought at the weight he fought them (namely the third Pacquiao fight). At this point, he's running on savvy and typical "El Terrible" guts.
