Magic Johnson revisits the time he talked trash to Michael Jordan
The always loquacious Magic Johnson made an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Thursday and regaled the host with a tale about his friend and former opponent Michael Jordan. According to Johnson, he "never talked trash" throughout his career except for one game against Jordan.
"I never talked trash but one time in my life." Johnson tells Kimmel. "So, we're with the dream team and, for three days in a row, we had came into a tie. What coach [Chuck] Daly did was split the team into East vs. West. Barkley, Jordan, Larry Bird, Pippen and Patrick Ewing all played in the East. We had the West guys, myself, David Robinson, [Karl] Malone, [Chris] Mullin, [Clyde] Drexler and John Stockton. So we would play every day. Tie.
"So this is the fourth day and we got out on them, about 12-2. And I said, 'I'm going to really rattle his chain.' So I went over there and tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'Hey, man. If you don't turn into Air Jordan, we're going to blow you out today."
That was all Jordan needed to hear because, according to Johnson, the former Chicago Bulls great just took over the game, draining threes and sticking his tongue out while pointing at Magic. He also says that Jordan ended the game by hanging in the air and then doing a 360 dunk against David Robinson. Johnson could just be over embellishing the story but if you follow him on Twitter, you know he is very literal and explains things as plainly as could be so perhaps he is telling the truth.
And as Kimmel says, the moral of the story is to never talk trash to Jordan. A life lesson that probably still holds true today.
