Lupita Nyong’o admitted to how a UK based Magazine edited out and smoothed her hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like
Posted on November 11, 2017admin

On November 9th, 2017, our gorgeous Kenyan actress posted on her facebook admitting to how a UK based magazine edited her picture to make her look like one of them. Here is her story: As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too. Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that Grazia UK invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like.

Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women's complexion, hair style and texture.

i feel conflicted about this.

the cover without the puff i think looks like the better picture. but then i get the feeling that if they did her hair on set, they did it with the intention that they were going to ps the puff out from jump. it's almost as if she got out of bed, got dressed, went to the photo shoot, they did make-up and said "go pose". the idea for this cover was planned before she took those pictures.

Yeah. She is fine as hell too.

She had a full head of hair and had it out in the back like a ponytailed afro puff.

This Asian nigga took the ponytail puff out of the pic and made it look like she was bald. He also changed the texture of her hair. This is beyond fucked up. For no reason. I could even see if it was the opposite to "give ' a person more hair for a pic but no, this is just childish bullshit.

She looks good either way but why even do that? White influence.

there is no change to her hair texture - it isn't straighter nor curlier
when has close cropped hair become euro?
photog created a stronger image with sharper lines

Fam- are we looking at the same pictures?

1. He changed the texture of her hair because it was pulled back in a ponytail in the original. In the fake pic it looks like coarse cropped hair. You can see the bulge of hair toward the back, in the original, whereas the fake pic gives her a round fuzzy tennis ball look.

2. The cropped hair look is what some euro folks WANT us to look like even if the texture is smooth. Its a preconceived notion of what African natural hair is sposed to look like as opposed to how it actually looked like in the original pic. I have seen more white girls with that buzz cut than I've seen black ones.

3. I agree that it is a stronger image, technically and ethnically too and the lines are crisp but that aint the original.

Again either pic is okay, she just looks better to me with her actual hair and the ponytail. Of course the touched up pic looks better.

1 - what you are describing here is not texture - he modified the styling /cut but not the texture
-if he made her hair seem straight or if he added luster or shine, then thats a change in texture
2 - the low crop cut in the picture is not the same as the buzz cut...
these are not euro centric styles

IME cacs do not like this look

3. Between the 2 photos - which one would you pick to be the cover of a magazine?
I like the first photo for portrait, social media, photo album, or dating profile, but for publication, headshot etc -I'll take the edit

Fam - I get what you saying. I like the edited pic too but you missed my whole point. He changed the texture by making it look like a low cut when it wasn't cut at all. It was already straight as it was pulled back into a ponytail. Its like taking a semi straight long strand of hair and making it look like close cropped hair. To me that's the same as bad as adding hair in a pic where the woman has none or making a thin girl look thick and voluptuous.

Lupita has had a buzz cut and the short crop look before. But this cover was around the time she had her hair grown out. It wasn't cut short at all.

Of course the edited pick looks better because it was retouched and finished. The original was not but that was her true look on that day. I don't know why he made her look like a tennis ball when she had a full head of hair. That's my only point. His was to subtract the ethnic looking hair from the pic because it was natural.
