ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A man who spent years of his life working to combat gun violence in Colorado shot a 28-year-old man in the head Saturday, according to Commerce City Police, as attendees of a child’s birthday party watched in horror.
The fatal shooting came nearly a year after the death of the suspected shooter’s son.

Lumumba Sayers, 46, remains in the Adams County Detention Facility facing first-degree murder and felony menacing charges stemming from the Saturday shooting at Commerce City’s Pioneer Park at Holly Street and East 60th Avenue. Sayers was an MMA fighter and founded Aurora’s Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts Foundation.
Sayers’ son, Lumumba Sayers Jr., was shot and killed August 19, 2023, at 28th and Welton streets in Denver.
Saturday’s shooting happened during a pool party for a child, according to an arrest affidavit. The affidavit says witnesses saw Sayers Sr. “walk up and shoot the victim in the head at close range.”
The affidavit goes on to suggest “a possible motive.”
“Witnesses had stated the [shooter’s son] had been murdered about a year ago by a friend of the deceased […] and this murder was probably in retaliation or revenge,” the document says.

Court documents identify the man who was killed as Malcolm Watson, 28.
9NEWS spoke to Watson's sister over the phone on Monday. She said the birthday party was for Watson's 5-year-old son. According to the sister, her brother is innocent and wasn't involved in the death of Sayers Sr.'s son.
"How is it a revenge killing if my brother isn't the one who had anything to do with it?" Watson's sister said.
His sister described Watson as someone who wanted to be a great father and be around his family and make sure his sisters were all fine. She called him a loving little brother.

In 2021, 9NEWS profiled Sayers Sr. and the Aurora gym he said he created to make a safe space for kids. He then told reporter Kelly Reinke, "we have just got to get these kids who are out here making bad decisions to make better decisions and do different stuff with their life."
"If you get those two parties together and they are able to talk about the situation, then we are able to stop a lot of the violence," he added.

Watson's sister said the shooting on Saturday came as a shock to the whole family.
"How are you an activist, murdering innocent people," she said.
Sayers Sr. has a court appearance on Aug. 15.

DENVER — The Denver Police Department is searching for the suspect in a shooting early Saturday morning near the corner of 28th Street and Welton in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood that left two people dead.
The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Tyrell Braxton. Police released a surveillance photo of Braxton Thursday, saying he was wanted for first-degree murder.

One of the victims has been identified as 23-year-old Lumumba Sayers Jr., a local MMA fighter who worked with his father to help stop youth violence.

“He's the founder of the Gloves Up Guns Down: Get Your Heads Up in the Hood movement. He was stopping a lot of the violence here in the community. Putting on boxing matches and stuff and showing these kids that there's a different way. He ran my moving company for me, that was my best friend,” Lumumba Sayers Sr. said.

Sayers reflected on his son’s MMA career.
“He was better than me. He was going to make it farther than I was. I had the recipe. He had the skills,” Sayers Sr. said.

Lumumba Sayers Jr. was also a father of a two-month-old son.

Lumumba Sayers, Sr. talks about his son who was killed in a shooting in Denver over the weekend. Lumumba Sayers Jr., was a local MMA fighter who worked with his father to help stop youth violence.

“My son loved being a father. Like I don't care what time it was, middle of the night he’d get up if he heard his baby crying and he was at my house. He’d go find wherever his baby was,” Sayers Sr. said.

Sayers Sr. said his son’s death is a slap in the face following everything he did to try to stop gun violence in the Denver metro.

“This coward shot my son, he shot my son, man. The community that we protect, you know, we try to provide for, the community that he tried to help guide in a different direction that he grew up in, they killed my son,” Sayers Sr. said. “My son wasn't no gang banger. He wasn't no drug dealer. He wasn't no troublemaker. My son was following after my footsteps.”

Sayers Sr. said his son did a lot to help his Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts Foundation.

“My son came in and put in his work. This is where we changed lives up here, where we teach different things like integrity, self-love, on the job training. My son, he used to bring all the young people in and give them jobs,” Sayers Sr. said. “We brought all his friends in to keep them out of the way, to help teach them a skill. The ones that didn't have no fathers around, he brought them to me so I could be that other father figure for them. And yeah, my son was amazing. Raised a great young kid and my son had a great life... I just want my baby back… I just want my baby back."

Anyone with any information on this case is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. A reward of $2,000 is being offered for information that may help solve the case.

Gulian Musiwa, 25, and Lumumba Sayers, 23, were killed in the shooting. Two other people were injured.

According to the affidavit, surveillance video showed what appeared to be an argument between Musiwa and the suspect, later identified as Braxton. The suspect was seen moving backward, away from Musiwa, while shooting at him, the affidavit says. He continued to fire until he reached the street, then ran away, the affidavit says.

The affidavit says two other people were walking next to and behind Musiwa as Braxton was shooting at him. Those two people were both hit by gunfire, the affidavit says.

After that altercation, the affidavit says, surveillance video shows Sayers firing a gun in the direction that Braxton ran. A short time later, Sayers was shot, police said.

Braxton is set to appear in court at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Wild! So they got the suspect on video and my man just decided to shot a friend of the suspect?

The news said the case was dismissed. So I’m sure that had something to do with his rage. He’s a good dude. A lot of kids looked up to him in Denver. He spoke heavily against gun violence and retaliation which makes this all ironic. I hate that he didn’t get the actual killer of his son though if he was going to do it.

I live in Aurora. My barber is very close with Sayer and his family. I remember when this happened. His son was training to be an MMA fighter as well. Guy was distraught when his son was killed. His daughter got into an altercation. Called the son. Son arrived in Montbello to confront the guys who was messing with his sister. In the argument, the son pulled out a gun. He wasnt fast enough. Shot multiple times. Multiple shooters. The news may be incorrect. Because word on the street, the guy he shot is the one who pulled the trigger on his son.

Sayer was an ex gang member trying to advocate for peace in the Denver metro area for years. Putting on events and talking to younger generation. He was also distraught because he felt that the community he supported turned on him. Haven't been right ever since. Sad to see this. :(

I fully understand.... but.......he should've went after his son's killer.

The last part of the last article posted may shed light on why Watson was targeted...

So if Braxton shot Musiwa then booked it down the street (on video)......... who was around to shoot Sayers Jr? (Off video)

I understand...... but I wouldn't do it in front of those kids........ regardless of what Watson allegedly did, those kids were innocent.

Catch him in the parking lot/driveway or cleaning up alone afterwards

Damn I couldnt imagine what dude went through. He crashed out hard, but I cant blame him :smh: :smh:
