LSU freshman Ben Simmons ineligible for prestigious Wooden Award
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab...e-for-prestigious-wooden-award-192027253.html

LSU freshman Ben Simmons is clearly one of the best players in the nation this season and the likely top pick in the NBA draft this summer, but he is not eligible for one of college basketball's most prestigious awards.

Simmons was not among the 15 candidates announced Saturday for the John R. Wooden Award because LSU did not certify his eligibility for the award. According to a report by Jeff Goodman at ESPN, the school couldn't certify Simmons' eligibility for academic reasons.

It's possible for a player to be eligible to play and ineligible for the award because the standards for each are different.

The only academic requirement the Wooden Award has for eligibility are that a student-athlete "must have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their current university."
By comparison, the NCAA grade-point average requirements to remain eligible are:

Student-athletes must achieve 90 percent of the institution’s minimum overall grade-point average necessary to graduate (for example, 1.8) by the beginning of year two, 95 percent of the minimum GPA (1.9) by year three and 100 percent (2.0) by year four.

So it seems Simmons achieved at least a 1.8 GPA in his first semester at LSU, allowing him to remain eligible to compete, but he did not achieve at least a 2.0 and is not eligible for the award because of it. Simmons remains eligible for All-American teams and numerous other awards, all of which, like the Wooden Award, are free to set their own standards and criteria.

Some are up in arms that one of the best players in the nation isn't eligible for the Wooden and would like the Los Angeles Athletic Club to change the criteria for the award to make it the same as the NCAA standards for eligibility. Their argument is that doing so would let voters know that any player who eligible to be playing throughout the season is in fact eligible for the award.

Asking an award to dumb down an already easily achieved minimum standard is ridiculous and the Wooden Award should continue to set its own criteria. It's not as if this was a secret. The rules for eligibility have been available on the award's website for years. The award has previously adjusted its criteria to do things like making freshman eligible for inclusion on the initial list of candidates because in this day and age there are a handful of freshmen each season who have the potential win the award.

But adjusting a GPA requirement isn't necessary just because one star player was tripped up by it. Literally hundreds of others haven't been. A 2.0 GPA is not a high bar to reach, especially for a freshman who typically isn't taking upper-division courses in a first semester of college.

More than 1,000 media members across the nation will vote for the men's and women's Wooden Award winners between March 14-21 and fans can vote through the award's website. The winners will be announced March 28.

While Simmons would probably be one of the top-five vote getters, it seems unlikely he would beat out older players such as Oklahoma's Buddy Hield, Virginia's Malcolm Brogdon and Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, whose teams have had better seasons largely because of their contributions.

Simmons went into the regular-season finale Saturday averaging 19.7 points, 11.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.

:gun06:Shots fired at the NCAA. They're costing him millions of dollars, meanwhile making money off of his play. With this one year rule. So I say, good.

I dont blame the NCAA one bit on this one. This shit is on the coaching staff and institution. LSU outta be ashamed of them dam selves.

Fuck all the bullshit. There is a reason just about every sport except the NFL and NBA have some type of farm system where you can pretty much start playing/get drafted straight out of high school rather than do a bullshit year of college. Fuck that award, get that money.

Come on a 2.0?
He don't have a 2.0?
The school and coach ain't shit. I mean come on a 2.0? Give him generic easy ass courses if you know he's going to be there 1 year and be out.. better yet give him nothing but money management and economic courses.. that should be required for 1 and done players.
you gotta take this money class this investment class this stock class etc and then you can go

man high school kids shouldnt be allowed to enter the NFL

they would straight get murdered

Should he give a fuck? No.

Dudes have to take 12 credits to be full-time and all they have to do to remain eligible is get at least the GPA to be on academic probation. For the one and done, they could give a fuck about classes.

I had a freshman athlete I mentored as a student at my major conference D1 college. His first semester schedule was:

- Coaching of track and field
- Billards
- History of sport in America
- English

Pulled a solid 2.0 that semester, just high enough to stay eligible. Dude would have been dismissed had I not saved him from turning in a paper in English that was carbon copy of one his girlfriend did the year before. Now, he wasn't going pro the next year but that's the typical IDGAF schedule for athletes whose sole goal is to be eligible for one season.

They stopped allowing players to enter out of high school because most were not ready for the NBA. I wish they would go to the same rule they use for football players

Its obvious he's 1 and done, and LSU may not even go to the tourny. Basically for him it's mission accomplished, the awards don't mean shit. But my dude... A 2.0???
You telling me those groupies couldn't do enough work for you to get a 2.0??? WTF man??? The bros pimp hand is weak. Maybe that's why is J is suspect???...

When I was in school I got a C that caused me to lose a scholarship and take on loans that I just finished paying off a year ago. He'll be a millionaire soon, wish I had those problems. But then again, I don't need a fucking plaque to define me.

I agree football is a whole different animal. But I'll say a few freshman are just men against boys already. A few examples are Leonard Fournette and Myles Garret* that Texas AM DE who built like fucking robocop.

I don't give a fuck, because it's obvious he didn't

I bet you he had one of those easy football majors too

They either need to let these guys go straight to the NBA or make them stay two or three years

You, know he wasn't worried about them classes, nigga did enough to be eligible first semester via the staff and Lsu, the second semester he prolly in class that's it, no test taken, no papers turned in. It is what it is, but he know he ain't eligible, and again just proves the joke that is NCAA basketball, you should be forced to stay at least 3 years I think too many kids leave early because of hype and end up being trash in the league

kids should be allowed to go to the NBA whenever they can get drafted. Fuck millionaire coaches complaining about kids maximizing their earning potential. Especially when a coach can leave whenever they feel like it

If they should be forced to stay then they should be paid well for there services if they aren't going to get paid then they should be allowed to leave.

They should, but thats not going to happen, but a lot of kids leave early and dont have the skill set to last long in the league, nor a degree for life after the league, i feel like atleast that gives you time to mature, get some skills, and possibly a degree... That they may atleast be able to put on a resume, hell i dont care if they set up classes that teach you contract negotiations, public speaking, money management, and other skills that may translate until they leave
