The Mets of the mid-1980s were known for playing hard and partying hard. For Darryl Strawberry, combining the two seemed to go hand-in-hand, especially with the ladies.
Strawberry, appearing on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio on Thursday, didn’t hold back much when discussing his days with the Mets ahead of Thursday night’s airing of ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary “Doc and Darryl” about Strawberry and teammate Dwight Gooden.
Strawberry admitted to drinking and smoking ("cigarettes, but not weed") at the ballpark, but it was another activity that shocked listeners. When host Evan Cohan asked if he ever had sex at the ballpark, Strawberry replied by saying, "When I was on the road yes, probably. There was a great possibility."
Cohan then asked "at a stadium?" to which Strawberry responded "at a stadium, yes." Strawberry then stunned everyone by saying "in the middle of a game." Cohan, confused like most listeners, wanted a little more information.
"It happened between the innings. It worked out well just how crazy it was," Strawberry said. "It kind of worked out that way. You organize it; you point her out and tell the kid."
"Doc and Darryl" — directed by Judd Apatow — details the highs, lows and what-ifs of the careers of Strawberry and Gooden, on and off the field ranging from winning the World Series together to their struggles with alcohol and the law.
