Backyard chicken keeping is now an increasingly popular practice in the United States due to enhanced interest in organic food. The trend has been on the rise since the start of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). There are an estimated 85 million backyard chickens in the United States, according to Psychology Today.

About twelve million people in the United States own backyard chickens, according to Baltimore Magazine. From supplying you with fresh eggs to giving you great fertilizer for gardening, keeping a small number of chickens in your backyard has many benefits. In the U.S., there are no federal or state laws that prohibit the keeping of backyard chickens. Instead, chicken-keeping laws are usually left up to individual municipalities.

Can you own backyard chickens in your state?

Whether or not you can keep chickens on your residential property in your state depends on the city, town, or county in which you reside. While many U.S. municipalities permit urban chicken farming, some do not. If you live in a rural or agricultural zone in your state, you won’t have a problem keeping chickens on your property. Still, it’s best to check with your municipality’s zoning office to determine whether there are restrictions on the number of chickens you can own. If you live in a residential zone, you’ll need to contact your local animal control, zoning office, or municipal clerk’s office before deciding on chickens. Alternatively, you can search for your city or town’s animal ordinance online.

HOA Laws

Besides local laws, there are homeowners association (HOA) laws that apply to chickens. If you reside in an HOA community, you may not be permitted to own chickens, regardless of what your city allows. However, many residents have won over HOAs, as urban chicken keeping continues to grow in popularity. In the State of Missouri, for example, new state law prohibits HOAs from banning backyard chickens in their rules and regulations.
