If you're unfamiliar, a VPN (virtual private network) routes your internet through remote servers to help keep your personal data private when you're on public Wi-Fi, and lets you access geo-blocked content from anywhere.

Windscribe VPN does all of that without slowing down your connection speeds or logging any of your data. It works as a desktop app and browser extension combo that's easy to set-up and configure, and even offers a firewall as extra security in case you lose connection. A standard subscription costs around $90 per year, but right now they're offering Engadget readers a lifetime subscription for only $49.99.

Top features:

  • Mask your physical location from 3rd parties
  • Access geo-blocked content from anywhere
  • Won't slow down your connection speeds
  • Use on all your devices simultaneously
  • Torrent securely and share files without worrying about your ISP snooping on you
  • Get protected by the top-notch firewall that protects you in case of connectivity loss
  • Leave no trace or logs while you browse
Whether you want to protect your online information from hackers, or want to access streaming content from anywhere in the world, Windscribe has you covered. Get in on a lifetime subscription today for over 90 percent off, just $49.99

If it doesn't really offer decent protection and I use the word "decent" for a reason then it's worthless.

Understand the whole point of VPN is to get the best protection you can afford.

If that's not your priority then you're wasting your money. Lifetime, for free, $1 etc doesn't matter.

Finally, VPN doesn't mean you're 100% protected. Which means don't go out there under "VPN" trying to break into the NSA or White House or look at Kiddie Porn or some other dumb shit.

If they want you they will catch you regardless of what you're using to mask your internet usage.

How can you tell if a vpn is giving you decent protection? Or which vpn would you recommend?

You definitely have to read the in-depth reviews(based on testing) comparisons. There are a few criteria that are important but the most important, imo, is how does the company log it, consumers? Does it keep records? If so, then that means with a legal subpoena or some form of brute those records are vulnerable and thus you as the end consumer. So their logging model is the most important determining point. After which things like their available Encryption Algorithm(OpenVPN), ip range, nodes, speed etc become secondary.

Personally, from my research, at the time, I went with Private Internet Access.

Depending on your need (and what kind of shit you're into) there are some serious $$$$ options(Seedboxes etc) out there.

Are you still using PIA? Any issues, pros or cons? Whats your opinion on Windscribe (if any)?

Im just looking for something that protects my tracking at home and on my travel devices and doesn't slow my network down too much.

I purchased a lifetime subscription to VPN Unlimited on Black Friday; really just use it to get around the WiFi filters at work; would this be an ungrade?

The minute you take a cellphone and connect it to any wifi, it tags the location with Google.

I recommended countries setting up free Free VPN like services if all of their web traffic is going over to the U.S. instead of regulating data privacy and using fines. All they will see is a single IP address and the inability to individually identify people.

I have had problems with having my emails erased and tampered. Never use email, Youtube, web search, maps from the same company. Your email can easily identify who you are.

Props to @Hotlantan for the Windscribe info and promo code..:

For my needs Windscribe has been working out fine. However, I do not use it as a permanent VPN - I only use it occasionally to get into US blocked sites and to DL from the same site using multiple IP addresses. So far it's been fairly reliable, but I cannot compare them speed wise to anyone else. They do have their own subreddit, and Windscribe developers do participate.

Purchased Windscribe Lifetime Pro last fall from Stacksocial for $39.99 by using the Promo code WINDSCRIBESD40 at checkout. Just tried the same code for you this morning and it dropped the current $69.99 price down to $41.40 .

I still use PIA occasionally and have never had any problems. I've connected to several different servers(coast to coast and even different countries) just to test the speed for everyday browsing. The results are pretty impressive and hardly noticeable. It only becomes noticeable, for me, when trying to download connected to servers from a different country. If you're connected to another state you likely won't see the difference.

As for security i've done a few network traces, ip id's, generated a few unauthorized login scripts etc. So far none have point to my local hub or native ip-address.

Realize this is about as good as it gets as an end-user. Your ISP can always tell your routing to a VPN provider and supposedly can't tell what the payload is but i doubt end-to-end encryption is as secure as it use to be.

Finally, I don't have an opinion on Windscribe because i've never used it or looked into it.

Good Luck!

Looked at Windscribe once but with only 45 VPN servers I passed...Using Nord VPN now with over 3,000 servers

I use "Setup VPN" It's free through Google....
Only catch is Google knows where you go

Well the point is it's free and if you don't want the website you are visiting to know your address
Nah, I gotcha. And you're not wrong, it's free and better than nothing. But to me, if Google knows what I'm doing, it kinda defeats the purpose of the VPN to begin with. But YMMV.

I went with PIA 2 years for 60 smackers. Thanks for the info and advice. Im gonna see what it do thus weekend. Also set up my new Nvidia Shield and fix my virus protection on my laptop.

It looks like PIA has a chrome extension. Does this mean I can use that rather than downloading the software to my pc?
