LG and Verizon Take On the iPhone

Today, Verizon unveiled its new fall lineup of phones, the highlight of which, the LG Voyager, takes aim squarely at the iPhone. Sure, it's a dead ringer for Apple's Jesus phone, but it's those similarities as well as some significant differences that make the Voyager a suitable alternative to Apple's handset -- at least for those of us Verizon customers not interested in jumping ship for AT&T.

The similarities between the phones don't end with the slick black case. They both have a 2 megapixel camera in common as well as a touch screen, which on the Voyager, runs the slickest, most user-friendly interface we've ever seen on a Verizon or LG handset (it's actually based on the one used for the LG Prada Phone). Of course, there's e-mail and text messaging like there is on the iPhone.

It's what the Voyager does differently that's got us excited. First of all, it runs on Verizon's high-speed EV-DO network, which is significantly speedier than the AT&T EDGE network the iPhone is chained to. Voyager also has GPS, which is lacking on the iPhone. It doesn't have a hard drive like iPhone does, but it does have a slot for a microSDHC card, which currently top out at 8 gigabytes but will soon be achieving capacities of up to 32 gigabytes.

Lastly, the Voyager is actually clamshell phone, hiding a second (giant) screen and full QWERTY keyboard under it exterior. Our pals at Engadget Mobile got their hands on the Voyager this morning, and while they say the Voyager is a bit meaty in size, they're equally as impressed with it as we are. No price has been announced, but expect to see the Voyager in stores around Thanksgiving.

In addition to the Voyager, Verizon announced that is will carry the BlackBerry Pearl -- no different than what you get from other providers -- and the Samsung Juke, which is positioned as an entry-level music phone with its click wheel and 2 gigabytes of built-in storage.

There's also a second LG phone, the Venus, which puts an interesting spin on the touch screen craze –- whether good or bad remains to be seen. The screen is actually split into two parts, and only the bottom half is a touch screen. The top half is your standard cell phone screen, the content/context of which changes the buttons displayed on the lower half.

This phone is no different from my LG EnV but now they have taken the little front screen and made it a touch screen but it doesnt have the WOW factor like iPhone has such as visual voice mail or managing photos and most critical Wifi interface. The internet on the phone is bullshit unlike iPhone which is a real internet display.

Pass

I been telling myself that I'm going to wait for the competitors to do something similar. Eventually, one of them is gonna come up with something much better, and you Applewhores will be in bitter denial while you languish with your trendy garbage. Gotta love it...

Actually, I was assured at the Verizon store that the web browser would be very similar to the iphone (with the zoom feature and all), and at the end of that video, it said "full html browser", so we'll see.

Im glad i left verizon and went to sprint I love the treo 755p and I can add games / media / office software and etc
use it as a mp3 / viedo player take pics internet and more

iphone is alittle overrated to me

So on point

Verizon should have waited a year or two and waited for the iPhone to be available for Verizon instead of trying to perpetrate this fraud and I am a verizon user I want an iPhone but fuck AT and T.

I rather wait.

I agree. I'm on Verizon as well and as usual they are never first at anything. God bless their network, its the best. But they never get the best phones first. his LG Voyager is definatley a bite of the iPhone, and a good one at that. But WTF took them so long to package shit correctly for us. People have been asking for the shit for years!!!! It took Apple to kick everybody in the ass. To wake up to the fact that average folk want more robust apps on their phone. I don't want a fuckin' blackberry to have it.

The iPhone clearly has more potiential than this LG Voyager based on just the fact that the iPhone has a real operating system and will build upon it. These Phones by LG are like one offs.

The Voyagers nice but it ain't an iPhone.:smh:

poppycock.

exactly why would i want a phone that copies another one why not get the real thing

and why the hell does everything have to be a ____ killer why can't it just be a good phone. The iphone is not for everybody if you don't like it great if you do great. What difference does it make

for real enough of that _____ killer talk. shit was cool when Pac first did it, with "Bad Boy Killa, Mobb Deep Killa," but shit is just ridiculous that every new device will suddenly top the iPhone. Do folks realize they worked on that software for 4-5 fucking years and patented EVERYTHING?!?!? Everybody had a chance to drop some hot shit forever ago and dragged their feet. Look at how crazy folks were over that cheap ass RAZR, that looked like a toddler could crush it with its bare hands. Instead of these wack knock offs, try to re-invent the wheel like Apple did and bring something new to the table instead of all this watered down nonsense.
