Once again we hear the outcry, mainly by poor losers, i.e., Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, to name a few.
Talking about the pot call the skillet black......The BOSTON RED SOX. The same Boston Red Sox who were literally glowing with wide grins aface after grabbing Daisuke Matsuzake (aka, Dice-K) from Japan for almost a million dollars (including payment for the 'required' fee just to negotiate with him), and influencing other teams to get other Japanese pitchers--an act Yankee GM Brian Cashman wil never live down. Remember Kei Igawa? The $26M drain? He spent more time in Scranton(AAA)& (TampaA), than New York. But he was hell in Japan (86-40, w/3.15 ERA). He reminded me of the George Steinbrenner comment about a Japan acquisition 'failure'--he was labled a " fat Toad". Kei Igawa will probably be traded--if the Yankees can find a 'taker'. Maybe San Diego? Or the old San Francisco Seals...oh, I forgot, they're out of business.
Sorry. I digress.
This is a very emotional subject. Hypocritical, but emotional. If the Milwaukee Brewers had saved and invested the welfare checks they got from the top NL clubs, maybe they could have put together a competitive financial deal for Sabathia. But they chose to 'pocket' some of the funds. All the while hoping for a 'hometown discount'. But the nostalgia approach doesn't work today..it's the bottom-line...$$$$$!
The Baltimore Orioles are still upset that the Washington Nationals got part of their market, thus pulling away some of their receipts. In theory they're (Baltimore) suggesting that they would have had enough money to get a Teixiera, if the Nationals didn't exist. I Don't buy that for a minute. What was Baltiore doing with their cash before the Nationals were created? Baltimore was frugal in a BIG market--covering almost three states. Hell, they couldn't even keep Mike Mussina. And he was the Orioles' GOLDEN BOY!
The Tampa Bay Rays use a realistic approach. According to Manager Joe Madden, "what else is new'? This subject is OLD NEWS! (Mainly by a bunch of haters and crybabies). Madon goes to say, "I figured he( Teixiera) would land in our Division (AL East). That's where all of the big names are going to normally land. We still have to remain focused on what we're doing...". Such fucus got them a Division Championship and playoff position last season. Maybe those who 'whine' should take your advice and stay "foccused' on their situations. Tampa Bay--like their NL rivals--Florida Marlins have tasted success., and find it not fleeting. As did the old Montreal Expos, of yesteryear! All they did was keep winning with very little fan support, but wise management and very good players.
The irony? So-called large market teams could learn from the so-called small market teams. Don't begrudge another's financial success or investment. Focus on your success.
