I'm a little frustrated with the lack of mainstream coverage detailing the accomplishments of the Obama admin. However, despite my personal feelings in support of the Team Obama, I'm mostly disappointed that one of the few major African American news outlets is wasting valuable front-page real-estate on light blog articles instead of educating people, one-way or another, amidst one of the most important presidencies in this nation's history.
I just sent this shit to The Root.com. I'm curious about the fam's feeling's on that outlet's journalistic responsibility....or am i beating a dead horse?
From the email:
Dear The Root Editorial Team,
When did The Root turn into such an entertainment-heavy blog site? President Barack Obama is under an attack of such ferocity that the cries of "one-term" is starting to swell amongst even his strongest black supporters. I don't expect The Root to be biased, However, I do expect The Root to do more than put its proverbial editorial 'head in the sand', by promoting such drivel front-pagers as "Fantasia vs Alicia Keyes", or "Blacks and Whites retiring The "n" word".
The only black president, and, arguably, the most impressive president in some time, is being attacked for being consistent with many of the promises that he made on the campaign trail. Unfortunately, we live in a nation that enjoys discussing change without the practice of it. Whether you agree with the man's policies, attitude, and diplomacy, at LEAST live up to the reputation that THE ROOT once had for being an extraordinary online African American news outlet. Why there aren't stories showing the accomplishments (and/or failures) of this administration in bullet-pointed plain english - if for no other reason than to EDUCATE THE AUDIENCE, is a mystery. Even if your staff is anti-obama, please write editorials and news stories intelligently articulating against him, so that, at least, intelligent and passionate discussion from the community leads towards informed decisions at the polls in 2012.
Important issues are in flux. As African Americans, we don't have the time - at this moment - to linger on the distractions of racial semantics and entertainment frivolity. As a nation, our economic futures are in jeopardy due to a deteriorating short term economy and depleting long-term resource fund. As a nation, attempts to reinvigorate our educational structure has been lampooned by the general consensus, in favor of bullying a no-win opinion from the administration to take a stance on the freedom to build a property for a religious group that represents a significant part of the U.S. population.
I could go on and on about MY opinion about what's happening in our world, but of greater concern is the lack of reporting on YOUR very influential opinion. Please do your job. Our community has precious few outlets remaining.
