Legal: Police seize $60 million worth of bitcoin from man who won’t give up his password

Can't dude just login somewhere else and get access? I mean it is a digital wallet right? Or is that not how it work because I remember recently a dude threw out a hardrive and was trying to get the town to let him excavate the dump where he thought it was at, apparently he had over 100m's on it.

that muthafucka is a hacker, he has the know how to mine bitcoin,

on muthafuckas computers.... he knows EXACTLY what he is doing,

and he still has access to that money...

because you better believe he has the password written down somewhere..

they aint confiscate jack shit.... but hardware....

he is lucky tho, if that was russia..

he would be talkin.. better believe that shit...

the police have a bag of rocks right now.
without the decryption key, they aint got shit.

I'd imagine it goes something like this:

Dear Blockchain,

This is the government.
Your owner has committed a crime and we immediately request that you generate his private key so that we may
confiscate the goods.

Regards,
Dumb Gov't who don't know how this shit works

as long as you have your password
you can buy a replacement wallet and get your shit back

We were just talking about government being exposed for fuckery in the other thread. This scenario is another way government will be exposed. What do we own that is worth 'big' money that the government can't confiscate?

They can take our homes. Bank accounts. Garnish wages. Seize safety deposit boxes. Stocks. Bonds. Crypt is really the only big asset they can't seize. So how long until we get regulations that make it mandatory to hand over private keys to a government agency? It work with their 'kyc' rules for self-custody wallets. So they know which wallets we own over 3k and government would need keys to that shit or else we are in violation and face prison time. :smh:

Yeah man, a fucking hacker. If regular cats saving keys/seeds to their heads, seeds written in code, etc, what a hacker doing for safekeeping? This ain't grandma. He willing to wait it out like in the movies where cats dig up the bank money years later after feds get tired of watching them.

You right, some countries don't play that. Russia put his ass in Siberia and he'd be begging them to take that bitcoin off his hands. Hell, even in the U.S. they could hold him indefinitely for contempt if they really want that money. I remember the guy who was doing years for contempt for not disclosing the location of millions in marital assets for divorce. Rather do time than let the ex have it.
