Non New Yorker but this can’t be true. I’ve seen the police walking around the train stations with them big boy toys for years atleast when I visited coming from DC.

Just like in DC, esp Union Station, Metro police always walking around with them big boy toys.

I use NYC public transportation regularly and it's great. I'm not trying to drive to Manhattan at all. Keep in mind I have been using NYC Transit since the 70's. Back when NYC streets were really dangerous.
