James draws criticism for stand on Darfur issue
May 28, 2007

By PA SportsTicker

LeBron James must have given hundreds, if not thousands of autographs in his three years of NBA stardom.

It took just one polite "no" to a different kind of autograph request recently for the 22-year-old forward to stir up a hornets' nest.

James was asked to sign an open letter, written by Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Ira Newble, condemning China's government for contributing to the genocide of people in the Darfur region of Sudan.

"China cannot be a legitimate host to the premier international event in the sporting world - the Summer Olympic Games - while it remains complicit in the terrible suffering and destruction that continues to this day," Newble wrote.

China is thought to buy a huge amount of Sudanese oil. The African country is then said to spend much of that oil money on obtaining weapons and technology from China.

Sudan is also accused of arming the Arab militia, the Janjaweed, who in turn use the weapons to murder innocent people in the Darfur region.

Newble's letter was signed by most of the Cavalier players, but not James, who said he didn't have enough information about the issue, or Damon Jones, who refused comment.

James has a huge contract with Nike, a company that has business interests in China, while Jones is to endorse products from a Chinese shoe and apparel company.

As James is one of the best players in the NBA, and a captain of Team USA who is likely to run onto the court in Beijing when the Americans attempt to regain the Olympic gold medal, it is not surprising his decision has led to a lively debate.

A political activist website, thinkprogress.org, wrote about James' decision not to sign and that led to varied comments posted on the website.

A person calling himself 'Badmoodman', wrote: "James has a $90 million deal with Nike, which has huge business interests in China. The Darfur issue passed by LeBron with a big SWOOSH."

There was a more sympathic view of James offered by someone calling himself Chris, who said: 1) LeBron James is a basketball player, not a policy-maker. He's 22 years old, still a kid. 2) Signing a piece of paper that says "I will not be a witness" saves how many lives?

Then someone who called himself Shane posted this: "Americans can't be bothered standing up for their country, their soldiers or the constitution. Why would we expect some athlete, no doubt with a neocon agent and manager telling him what to do, to stand up for people with no money who will never buy the shoes he hawks."

Former United State Senator and New York Knicks star Bill Bradley did not mention LeBron James by name, but also spoke about the issue in a story published on www.bloomberg.com.

"You have to decide what it is you want to use your celebrity for," Bradley said. "It's conceivable that some people will choose to never do it, in which case it's unfortunate. There are bigger lives that can be led."

As is the case with most star athletes these days, they should be admired for their actions on the court, not off it.

propz to Lebron

you just dont sign your name to something without researching it

who knows what's on that document

read shit before you sign brothers

lets just hope Lebron does his research and makes a decision based on that

Another case of the White media attacking another brother.Who gives a fuck what he signs? He has a foundation to help unfortunate kids (http://www.lebronrulez.com/lebron-james-foundation.html) .Does the media cover it? After katrina how many pro athletes sent money for aid? Did the media pressure anyone? As said above, the man said he hadnt even read it yet.I bet the media outlets deriding him dont have one employee sending any aid to Dartfur.I hope you brothers arent feeding into this shit and hopping on this bandwagon. How much money/time has Steve Nash sent over there?

How long has the genocide been taking place?
what research?
unless he is one of those DUMB athletes ptoud of showing off their shitloads of TV in MTV cribs but they cant even watch current events news

what a stupid idiot
NIKE WILL ALWAYS SELL THOSE TRAINERS IN CHINA whether he signs it or not

I don't know what's on the brother's mind or what his true intentions are when it comes to the petition. But, when it comes to business, it's counterproductive for him to become socially aware. Sponsorship money will dry up for him.

Let me preface my next statement with the following. I am not a sports fan, and I do not know everything, but can someone humbly educate me to Michael Jordan's activist/philanthropic activities?

Yeah, I'm thinking that Lebron didn't even know what or where Darfur is. Remember he's a Professional basketball player. His life right now and since he was a kid had been to live eat, and sleep basketball. Walk down the streets of your own neighborhoods, and ask people "What's going on in Darfur ?" I' pretty sure not many people will be able to answer you. I'm sure the whole not signing thing had nothing at all to do with Nike, and had more to do with him not knowing anything at all about the situation.

Maybe this has something to do with him being scared of losing Nike money ... maybe it doesn't. If the man says he hasn't done enough research that seems like a valid reason.

It seems ridiculous to only single out China when anyone can do research and find out that more players are causing this situation, including ones linked to American soil. Why should Lebron sign some paper just because his teammate heard on the news last night that China is being bad ... many countries are responsible. This whole "save Darfur" campaign is going to do what again????

Lets talk about oil.

shame
I bet in that petition they had alot oh WHITE players...what a waste of space

Then agin i am sure there are many dumb players like him anyway. I am not sure whose fault it is for him not even knowing where DARFUR is

These are the same people who complain whne WHITES are too involved in Africa
Fuckin hate it but what can i do? If Don Cheadle and Cloney can be better lobbyists then fine coz LEBRON might be a huge embrassment enyway

Talk about a LOST GENERATION

I think he's doin the right thing...you don't automatically jump ship with a bunch of people to pose a stance against something you don't know shit about. He likely doesn't know whats going on....whose it affecting and how it will effect him. Can't really blame him for not being aware...cuz there is so many problems in the world that should be spoken about...its hard following them all. People need to get off his back...and with that said Go Pistons.

Regardless of how anyone feels about the Darfur situation;

1. Ira Newble was wrong for pushing up on his teammates to sign the petition. You do not bring that type of shit to the job, it creates nothing but problems. I challenge anyone to take an "Impeach Bush" petition to work and see what happens.

2.Lebron was right for not signing that shit. Ira was trying to make a statement by borrowing Lebron's superstar status, he should do his shit on his own dime. We all remember what happened wit Carmelo and that "Stop Snitchin'" bullshit. You got to be smart and not let people use you.

3. Whoever leaked the info on who signed/who didn't for whatever reason should have they ass kicked. You don't do shit like that. That should get you off the team.

After Katrina, I saw the cat at a Sam's club. The employees told me he had just FILLED two 18 wheelers with supplies headed for N.O. and that he had dropped at least a half million on that shopping spree. No cameras, no press, just Lebron and a truck. I know plenty of grown men who haven't said shit about Darfur. What has T.D. Jakes said? How about Creflo? Joel Olsteen? There is AT LEAST one preacher in every city in this country now calling himself a MAN OF GOD and driving a Bentley that ain't said SHIT about Darfur OR Katrina, but nigz are still tything to them every week without fail and got them up on a pedestal like God himself.

But a 22 year old basketball player gotta save the world.

Even Bush signed off on the sanctions that China won't.

Lebron is a sellout. A whore for the cash like many people in this country. I can't stone a whore when my own sheets may be dirty but I damn sure ain't gonna refrain from callin them what they are, a whore.

Will Lebron get the information on it and then sign it? No.
Same shit as Jordan and other sellouts.

They can ball but they have no heart.

Ask Jim Brown, Ali, Russell and Kareem about takin a stand for what's right while being a professional athlete.

Everyone isn't a political activist but if people want to call these muthafuckas role models let them play their fuckin role.

Fukk should he sign that shit for...every country is tainted with bad blood...maybe we should just cancel the Olympics altogether...fukk outta here...

1. I go to T.D. Jakes church, and he goes to Africa A LOT!!! The news just don't look up stories about Religion doing Charity....

2. The reason you don't hear about the good things people do, is because its GOOD. When the last time the media reported something overwhelmingly great.

3. At least Bush is acknowledging it, look at how Clinton handled Rwanda...

Funny thing about this whole debate about Darfur, if we sent troops to Darfur, we would essentially be doing the same thing we are doing in Iraq. Helping out a group of people that has had NO experience in a free, thriving, democracy.

The media's coverage of this aint about whether or nor athletes should all sign the shit, or give a fuck about international politics in general. This is newsworthy because the only two hold-outs on the team have significant public business ties to China. That is worth drawing attention too.

This nigga is so smart he doesn’t even know what is going on in Darfur, so he needs to do more fucking research. for crying out loud were da fuck has he been for the last 4 years?
Is fuckin easy for LJ to fill 7 trucks with whatever fuckin shit he wants but the more courageous act would have been for him to say the fed gov failed the people of NO because the were poor black folks.

I'm not the least bit surprised that this big dumb uneducated field nigga was complete oblivious to the situation in Darfur. :smh:

yeah, this one (http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/oil/irqindx.htm)

Iraq has the world’s second largest proven oil reserves. According to oil industry experts, new exploration will probably raise Iraq’s reserves to 200+ billion barrels of high-grade crude, extraordinarily cheap to produce. The four giant firms located in the US and the UK have been keen to get back into Iraq, from which they were excluded with the nationalization of 1972. During the final years of the Saddam era, they envied companies from France, Russia, China, and elsewhere, who had obtained major contracts. But UN sanctions (kept in place by the US and the UK) kept those contracts inoperable. Since the invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003, everything has changed. In the new setting, with Washington running the show, "friendly" companies expect to gain most of the lucrative oil deals that will be worth hundreds of billions of dollars in profits in the coming decades. The new Iraqi constitution of 2005, greatly influenced by US advisors, contains language that guarantees a major role for foreign companies. Negotiators hope soon to complete deals on Production Sharing Agreements that will give the companies control over dozens of fields, including the fabled super-giant Majnoon. However, despite pressure from the US government and foreign oil companies, the current Iraqi government has not passed a national oil law. While regional governments angle for influence over the foreign oil contracts, most Iraqis favor continued control by a national company and the powerful oil workers union opposes de-nationalization. Iraq's political future is very much in flux, but oil remains the central feature of the political landscape.

in other words gentlemen...the us is going after the big prizes first...sudan does not register on the radar (yet, if ever)

any more questions?

...snickering...damn noobs always trying to edge into the convo to get a reputation

On one hand yes LeBron is Nike's bitch. But on the other hand why is this about China? I mean our own government does a bunch of gangster shit. Why should LeBron be called on the carpet to fight the Chinese when he's positioned to make a TON of money there. And if you're worried about immoral foreign policy you can start right here at home...

Also to me Darfur is kind of a fad. Nobody gives a FUCK about the Congo! That shit is just to distract from Iraq.
