What was your age, what is your competency and how much time did you invest?I learned a shitload of Spanish from the Michel Thomas audio cds(mp3s). He teaches verbs first and you learn how to put together sentences pretty fast. That Tim Ferriss guy recommended him as the best (and fastest) way to learn a new language, too.
An elitist way of saying "No, I haven't"?I've been learnin' porn board language for the past 5yrs now. It's a variation of English with run-on sentences, misplaced punctuation, misspelled words, incorrect grammar structure & logical fallacies or no logic at all. Chattin' with people who use this language is like being transported to a world of idiots where magically everything makes sense. You're attacked if you point out to them their errors. Their typical response is "Nigga, this is a porn board." as if to say "Look, we're idiots, we like the fact we're idiots & we're gonna stay idiots."
The language is difficult at times but, I manage.

Good info. You posted before I got the edit in but I'd have the same question for you-- What was your age, what is your competency and how much time did you invest? You spoke Spanish from childhood?Rosetta Stone is a pretty good product for adult language learning. It's doable, and the lessons are pretty short if you're pressed for time, you can knock out three or four lessons a day. I spoke Spanish already and played around with Portuguese and French and got pretty familiar with those pretty fast. The only problem is they're all Romance languages so you can get some words mixed up if you mess with them at the same time.
If you're bilingual and a citizen, you're pretty much immune to unemployment in the southwest U.S.I'm 32 and I've been slacking on trying to learn Spanish. The main reason I want to learn is that my job pays 5k extra in salary for bilingual speakers. Hell, most places pay employees extra if they are bilingual.
Your co-sign is worth more if you share what you've done with it!I cosign Spanish from Michel Thomas....
I'm 36. I just started learning Spanish about 3 weeks ago. I'm using the Pimsleur mp3s that I found on BGOL.I can tell I'm making progress so I'm staying motivated. I listen at least 15 minutes to an hour each day depending on the time I got available. The key is not to be distracted and listen for at least a few minutes each day. At this point I'm also able to practice reading Beginning Reader books in Spanish.

Also, this week I was eavesdropping on some Mexican coworkers and I didn't know what the subject was but I realized I could now understand some words. At this rate I should be able to ear hustle in a few months.
Nah, I was asking your competency-- i.e. if you were coversational or what level you're on.What I've done with it?
Besides learning conversational spanish?
I didn't start a Business if that's what your driving at.

Yeah, I'm thinking Spanish and my interest is strictly utilitarian. My mothers pr, so I spoke Spanish from childhood. I got Rosetta Stone from off of here a few years ago, so I was about 29 or 30. I'm pretty fluent in Portuguese and picked it up pretty fast. Like I said, the time you spend is on you. You can spend 5 mins on a lesson or you can spend an hour and do 20. The French I can understand, but it's not as useful to me because I'm not around French speakers a lot.
So my advice is to try a language you can use immediately, not something like pasto or Urdu.
man the problem with spanish is that shit is spoken differently in every spanish speaking country
some words dont mean the same thing, the pronunciations are different, and the slang(which is most important for conversations) is incredibly different
i guess its like how there is different forms of english from britain, to here, and then how Jamaicans speak it but 10x worse with spanish
good luck fam...but i think the best way to learn is to fly somewhere and immerse yourself in it
For those interested, here is a blog of an italian guy who speaks multiple languages (like 7 or 8 I think). He has techniques and everything for those learning new languages. Check it out.

I have heard that it is harder to learn a new language as an adult than as a child...partially because of how the brain develops as one gets older...also, it's based on the fact that as an adult, someone is so immersed in their language and culture, and the time factor, that makes it even more difficult...
I have tried some online programs to learn Spanish, but motivation and time has always slowed me to a crawl...I took French from 7th grade through first year of college, but I've used it maybe twice in my life...
A question for the fam...whatever happened to Berlitz? Back in the day, Berlitz was THE company to go through to get materials to learn a new language, but I don't hear about them anymore...
...that said, which one is better? Rosetta Stone? Pimpsleur? Another program?
