i AM on the fence on this one. But also realize that most white people dont know and don't care about our history in this county.

There are usually very learned people on this show. This is an admission that the mainstream American Education system doesn't teach African American History. If they did these eggheads would have chosen the category.

Racism for America as a whole and ignorance for the contestants.

So people avoid a category they know little or nithing about and its racism ?

I'd call it ignorance.....and OP that's a helluva reach you got there

Racist on two ends.

It's a little racist on the contestants end, since Black history is American History. They chose not to be educated on that part of history for reasons only they would know, but I definitely think its tied to what they feel is important.

The other racist aspect is this is just a reflection of the American Educational system, that views Black History as only Slavery and the Civil Rights movement.

yeah where the hell is my man kefta with his stamp on this...

this some straight bullshit here :smh:

we must learn the difference between racism, prejudice, and ignorance

this is simply the latter fellas

I think can make a strong argument for racism on this one. At least the context of it.

nah racism is an institutional system based on laws and policies

this is just ignorance

theyre simply avoiding a subject that they have no knowledge on

Racism can manifest itself in the form of ignorance as well. And here it manifest in the form of preference, deferral, negligence, indifference, and ignorance.

Exactly. It is unequivocally racist.

What you defined are prejudices not racism. Someone not picking a category on african american history is not racist. ignorance is not racism, its a form of prejudice. Racism is defined as a system which contributes to the oppression of a large group of people on a macro level. Someone not picking a gameshow category does not affect us on a whole. Racism is the citizens of Ferguson being accountable for over 70% of the fines paid to st louis county. Racism is public school students not getting the same materials and funding as their white counterparts. And so on...as i said their is difference between racism, prejudices, and ignorance.

Speaking on systems, Racism is the American Public School system not fully teaching Black history as a part of American History, and keeping it tied to February focusing only on Slavery and Civil Rights.

The American School system has chosen to ignore parts of history to push what it feels is important. The school system is racist, and prejudice and ignorance derive from it.

A racist system influenced a racist mindset. The contestants didn't think Black history was important enough to learn, because the system influenced them. They are adults now, no need for them to continue to stay in the dark regarding Black (American) history.

I used to subscribe to the same black and white definitions and understanding. But i have come to understand and believe that it is more nuanced than that. Racism is taught and learned. And can therefore be exhibited by an individual- and in this case a group of individuals- educated in its system. If their actions are a reflection of racist ideals and propaganda, then displaying them on a national stage and broadcasting for the world to see is in effect furthering and supporting racist sentiment and therefore racist in itself. This is why i say keftas quote about context is very appropriate here.

Everything you stated is indeed racism. But so is this.

"You cannot wake someone who is pretending to be sleep." When there are conversations about race, this (feigned ignorance) is one of the tools in the white toolbox that is successfully used to confuse non-white people.

I dont know european history? Does that make me racist?

again racism has to affect a group as a whole

how is that hurting us as a people?

tell me how is avoiding a category is racist?

how does that affect us as a whole?

if this doesnt systematically hurt you or i then it isnt racism

Europe is not a part of American history, so I fail to see how you could compare European history with Black American History.

Black people cannot be racist.

Not knowing or caring for another group's history can create a sense of not caring for those people as a whole.

White folks, who are in positions of power will have no fucks to give, if they don't have an understanding of history or never had a reason to care.

european history is very much so american history

hell youre indoctrinated by it all through out grade school

and black people cannot be racist since we do not have the power to affect things on a systematic level therefore youre making my point

but we can be prejudice as fuck against whites, gays, etc.

Its racist because we have a panel of 3 individuals of higher than average knowledge and or intellect who either purposely or subconsciously avoid the most glaringly black thing on the trivia board. That level of group think cannot be discounted as coincidence coming from a panel of learned people. The mindset on display is one of taught racism.

It affects us as a whole because it serves as evidence of the level of indifference and neglect held by the majority class (both directly and indirectly).

Its an example of the systematic oppression and general disregard for all things black held by the masses.

Its blatant racism on display bro.

Through the American schooling system, Blacks are not making the curriculum nor are they publishing the textbooks that are used in public schools. Whites are in control of the public education system in America. They decide what should go in the textbook and they decide on who gets to publish it. They also decide what gets taught based on their curriculum devlopment. In American Civics, European History, and EVEN World History, whites control the contents. This is indeed part of institutional racism.
