Los Angeles’ top two lineups in terms of plus-minus last season included Odom, not Bynum.

The sometimes too unselfish Odom has the ability to shoot 3-pointers, nail mid-range shots, score in the post, bring the ball up the floor, drive to the basket and find teammates for open buckets – all without an ego.

“He can be nonchalant, non-aggressive at times,” the West advance scout said. “But he adds to the team concept. He’s not worried about scoring. He’s a point forward. He makes extra passes. He makes plays for the team. He’s talented, has length and has size. Not many power forwards can make those plays.

His playmaking ability makes everyone better. When he makes jump shots and he’s assertive, he creates mismatches for everyone.”

There is a statistic that provides a true indication of Odom’s value: individual plus-minus. Odom finished the 2008-09 season with a team-best +693 plus-minus – better than both Bryant (+659) and Gasol (+572). Moreover, the only NBA player with a higher plus-minus than Odom’s was Cleveland’s LeBron James(+871).

while the rap on Odom is that he creates mismatches all over the floor but doesn't always
exploit them, the numbers say he's actually laying a hurt on guys. Odom pulls down 13.3
rebounds per 48 minutes this season, while his opponents at the 4-spot, head-to-head, grab only
10.5 rebounds per 48. The average power forward guarding him this year manages just 0.9 blocks
per 48 (league average is 1.1) but Odom tallies 2.1 against his opposite number. And when he
plays the smaller roles, while he's taking fewer shots and scoring less than his opponents, he's
outperforming them as a facilitator (5.6 assists per 48 to his counterparts' 3.7).

You look at the on/off stats all season, we dominate defensively with LO on the floor, are barely average without him on the floor.

Lamar On/Off (Regular Season)
+16 on, -2 off, +18 total

Lamar On/Off (Playoffs)
+13 on, -5 off, +18 total

This can’t be a coincidence, and the rate we’re actually losing when Lamar is on the bench is even worse in the playoffs.

Back to tonight, without LO, we were down 21-17 after 8 minutes, then over the next 15 minutes held Orlando to just 25 points, while scoring at a higher clip to the tune of 39 points.

08:00 17-21
23:00 56-46

Orlando (points)
21/8 = 2.6/minute
25/15 = 1.7/minute

Lakers (points)
17/8 = 2.1/minute
39/23 = 2.6/minute

With the 'value' this guy provides for the Lakers I predict that the Lakers will re-sign him. In fact, I think that both sides are expecting the other to blink and the negotiation status--at this point--is pure 'brinkmanship' and a lot of EGO.

UPDATE!!!

Lamars' in the fold! He wanted 5yrs/$50M, while the Lakers initially offered 4yrs/$36M. A 'protracted' holdout caused the Lakers to pull their initial offer ".... off the table". After avbout two-three weeks things cool-down, and sensibility--on both sides-- set in. A deal--that both sides can life with-- was done.

The two sides finally settled for 4yrs/$33M, making Los Angeles the prohibited favorite the win the NBA title. And , more importantly, Odom a 'happy camper'.

So, cranrab, what do you think the Lakers starting lineup should be next season?

starters - post scoring, rebounding, defense and discipline. just add a decent outside threat and the let O run the way it is supposed to.

pau gasol
lamar odom

note: i don't like the idea of lamar odom having to play the 4, but he deserves a starting role on the fakers. playing out of position at the 4 has shortened lamar odom's career, much like playing out of position at the 5 shortened dale davis' career.

bench - move tobe to the bench where smarter players luke walton and jordan farmar would limit the tobe's frequent mistakes and poor shot selection, but still allow him to provide a streaky threat of O every now and then

ditch the project rookie elonu, give adam morrison his freedom, and toss out sasha vujacic.

if he wasn't so short AND long in the tooth, damon jones would be a good example of an available, credible outside threat.

He wanted 5yrs/$50M
They offered 4yrs/$36M

So they "compromise" and he gets 4yrs/$33M ??? Less than their original offer and he's "happy camper"??? Call me crazy, but that don't sound like a settlement. Did he get sommore dough under the table?? Or first dibbs on Laker girls or something??! Or maybe a free weekly BJ from Dr. Buss' wife?? Cause thay certainly was no compromise

The market dictated that he wasn't a $10 million a year player. The Heat offered the same amount of money with one extra year. He's getting $8 million a year to be a 6th man and have a shot at repeating as NBA champs. Sounds like a good deal to me.
