Funny seeing this thread today ... I just finished talking to my brother about this shit
My hair is natural and I always wear it curly ... but I had to flat iron it 2 days ago for my brothers wedding cuz I was a bridesmaid ... its so weird cuz the guys around me who werent blinking twice at me on Thursday are all of a sudden throwing compliments at me today just cuz my hair is straight ... dudes are acting like I'm all of a sudden a diff person cuz my hair is straight
I really think most black men prefer straight hair to natural

Been natural for years but I'm just starting to get into wearing it sans braids. I got a couple of pics around here in the threads Izzy alluded to showing my hair, (is that the right word? I am the worst speller and I just used what spell check gave me).

See , this is what's funny about some black women. Ya'll will say most black men prefer straight hair while wishing more men gravitated towards a more natural look. Then when the guys who like the natural look approach, the women tend to think something is wrong with dude for liking natural hair. It's like damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Because I see plenty of women who end up going back to processed/fake hair because they want to continue to compete with other women for the same dudes who only like straight hair. Plenty of brothas love women with natural hair. But the more important question is do natural women love themselves with their natural hair?
I love black women, and that's not a slight to women of other races but I like black women. All shapes, sizes, hairstyles, light brite to jet black skin, I luv em all.
What do you look like Lonestar29? The way you describe your interactions with men, you make it seem like your ugly or something.
I've been locing my hair 7 years now, and I haven't had any issues with dating. Before I started locing my hair, I just decided that if a dude isn't attracted to me because I'm natural, then he's not the one for me, anyways. I've actually had more luck with dating after I started locing than before.
what really gets me is that, while we can all agree that a perm on a black man looks ridiculously wrong some how, if they were women it would seem intrinsic.

the women are implying its the men's fault for liking that style and they changing for them. Could it be the women seeing the attention other races are seeing and then trying to emulate because they don't feel beautiful? Just think of all the money black women use just to get their hair straight. And then having these sistas with gold or blonde hair just looks silly.

Good point and that's why its important to remain natural imo.
People have to see it more. I think the more exposure the less of an oddity it will look like. Like in New York or other east coast cities you see a lot of naturals so I don't think men really care because it is taking on a "norm". That's a good thing.

Lonestar is pleasing to the eyes and has great hair militant. Toronto just seems like a rough place for sistas that prefer not to date interethnic.

Thats a good question ... I think its hard for some women cuz they want to feel desired by the men they want ... some women make a direct link between how men view them and how they feel about themselves. I love my hair the way it is cuz thats how GOD gave it to me and I'll keep it that way cuz thats what I like regardless of what anyone else thinks ... BUT I can completely understand why women would straighten their hair to attract men ... noone wants to be alone and every woman wants to feel desired, its natural to do things to attract men
I dont believe natural hair is a priority for black men ... I think bm only bring that up when its time to belittle us ... at the end of the day a brotha will pick a girl with a perm or weave and a phat ass over the natural sista with a smaller ass who isnt so video hoe looking. there ARE bm who love natural hair and its important to them but its not that many, its not a majority or anything like that

I've been natural for 8 years. At one point I wanted to believe that it was just a choice and not a statement, but when I see how people act when I do press my hair (rarely) I get annoyed. I had one girl straight up like "you should wear your hear like that it looks better" It's so sad how conditioned we are to believe what naturally grows out of our heads is not beautiful. Chicks would rather rock a f'd up looking wig than wear their natural hair. What's really crazy to me now is how the weaves don't even look like permed black hair anymore now everyone is Indian or Asian

Black man here....my last girlfriend went from straight permed hair to long natural locks. It was a 4 year process but I can say from experience that a sista with "NATURAL" hair is sexier and more fun than one with straight hair. Even to this day I don't find myself that interested in women with straight hair, go natural you will be emotionally, spiritually, and mentally liberated and it carries over into your physical life.

You know what else drives me insane? Chick got the nerve to try to put money aside to get her hair done on a Saturday, I see her two days later and it look like the fake hair is attacking her head. All that money and all she can say is "you should have seen it when it was first done"
I do my hair...don't like it? It get old? Wash it and try again. I've gotten so good at putting the right type of twist in my hair I can do it in thirty minutes. Even my momma can't braid my hair in thirty minutes.

I think it’s both.
Both genders have bought into the idea that whites are beauteously superior. The whole thing with the hair is just one example.
They want to be attractive to us, but seeing young, thin, white women desired and drooled over on TV and in movies while they play the fat, greasy, ashy, illiterate, maid defiantly has an impact on them too.
It’s the main reason so many black men are brainwashed so I know I gets to them as well.
I agree with the green. More so if you have a man. We want to do what it takes to keep a good man, we don't want reasons like you not attracted to us anymore to be a factor in a breakup/divorce.
But the red...while I don't deny Black women get some shitty roles in Hollywood I think - at least some of us - don't care about the white chicks that get drooled on. What one person might see some white goddess I see someone with fake hair, unhealthily skinny, and make up for two adults and a preteen.
The unemployment rate among black women is 14.1. how many natural black women will feel compelled to straighten their hair before a job interview? how many natural black women will never get the interview in the first place?
IMO, black women want the same type of mainstream acceptance that white women have. For various reasons, its more important to those women than whether black men find them attractive.
When I was heavily looking for work going on interviews, my hair was braided. And I don't mean micros either.
When I went on the interview that got me my current job I wore a wig. Only reason was because I was pregnant and it was last minute to get my hair done. That weekend after my interview my hair was braided.
Every interview I've been on since then my hair has either been braided or natural in a loose style.
It's not that Black women want the same acceptance white women have we just want to be accepted. Period. Those who know see what's going on. We can't glorify the strong Black woman because it makes men weak and destroys households. We can't glorify the gullible Black women because it makes all of us hoes, addicts, and ignorant. You try to play the middle and you're either selling out or cashing in. Or both. But this topic has little to do with our hair, (not 100% because power can be found in hair). As a general Black woman - not famous, not campaigning - I love my natural hair in all its forms. I can't say it's because it's more attractive or I'm more in tune with myself, I just love my hair.
And I bet you 8 out of 10 IN THE LEAST you ask a chick with a wig or a perm on if they love their hair and their answer will be 'no'. The key is to loving what's on your head; that will determine what you do with it.
