It's official. With the mayor of Los Angeles finally 'fessing up to an affair with a TV anchor, the summer meltdown at City Hall is at least as entertaining as anything on the old Rocky and Bullwinkle show.
"It is true that I have a relationship with Ms. Mirthala Salinas," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa admitted in a statement to the Daily News.
Once again, Villaraigosa requested "that people respect my family's privacy." But let's not forget that the last time he asked for privacy after announcing that he and his wife were splitting, he then quickly called a press conference.
I suspect he'll call another one any day now, and it can't be too soon. Among other things, we need to know if Telemundo news anchor Salinas, who referred to Villaraigosa's split as a "political scandal" on the air, is moving into the mayoral mansion. Are girlfriends allowed in there?
And we need to know if the former Tony Villar, who blended his last name with that of wife Corina Raigosa, will now be Mayor Antonio Villarsalinas.
Only time will tell. And I wonder if, in the meantime, there might be more developments in the saga of City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo and his wife. Is it too conspiratorial to think that certain people in the mayor's office might be inclined to leak a story or two on the embattled Delgadillo, just to take the spotlight off the mayor?
I'd be shocked if they didn't.
Stay tuned, L.A.
The summer of love is hot and getting hotter.
Steve Lopez will have a full column on the mayor situation later. Check out latimes.com/lopez.
