My instinct was that the total shift away from basketball as his legacy stems from coming up short in his quest to top Jordan + the added injury of most people viewing him as surpassed by LeBron. Nobody with credibility doesn't have Kobe top 20, many people have him top 10. He was a #13 pick so he dramatically overachieved-- He only fell short of his own highest aspirations.
