Racism: A History

Part 1 of 3

New series exploring the impact of racism on a global scale, as part of the season of programms marking the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Beginning by assessing the implications of the relationship between Europe, Africa and the Americas in the 15th century, it considers how racist ideas and practices developed in key religious and secular institutions, and how they showed up in writings by European philosophers Aristotle and Immanuel Kant.

Possibly, the best doc i've seen that deals with the issue of scientific racism, and it's philosophical origins. This is a must see. part 2 by the way, is excellent also!

Racism: A History

Part 2 of 3

Looking at Scientific Racism, invented during the 19th century, an ideology that drew on now discredited practices such as phrenology and provided an ideological justification for racism and slavery. These theories ultimately led to eugenics and Nazi racial policies of the master race. Some upsetting scenes.

Racism: A History

Part 3 of 3

The third and final episode of Racism: A History examines the impact of racism in the 20th Century. By 1900, European colonial expansion had reached deep into the heart of Africa. Under the rule of King Leopold II, The Belgian Congo was turned into a vast rubber plantation. Men, women and children who failed to gather their latex quotas would have their limbs dismembered. The country became the scene of one of the century's greatest racial genocides, as an estimated 10 million Africans perished under colonial rule. Contains scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

Congo - White King, Red Rubber, Black Death

The story of King Leopold II of Belgium's brutal colonisation of central Africa, turning it into a vast rubber-harvesting labour camp in which millions died.

What the Belgians did in the Congo was forgotten for over 50 years. It's a shocking, astonishing story. In a way, it's a horrifying prelude in European history to the Holocaust.

Between 1870 and 1900 the Congo was pillaged - it was valuable as a source of rubber. King Leopold created his own colony in the Congo over which he ruled unchecked. Peter Bate's film is a marvellously made reconstruction of those days - it features footage of Congolese villages and explains with actors exactly what happened.

It's really a memorable film - the painfulness of what is described is counterbalanced by the great skill in the storytelling. Contains scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

THE COCONUT REVOLUTION

Director: Dom Rotheroe
2002.UK

Bows and arrows against helicopter gunships, and bows win - with a little help from the coconut. This is Bougainville, a small island off the coast of Papua New Guinea and the site of the world's first successful ecological revolution. The world paid no attention when in the sixties the British company Rio Tinto Zinc bulldozed jungle in Bougainville and proceeded to dig the word's largest open-cast mine. Then in 1989 the indigenous inhabitants launched a remarkable and ultimately victorious revolt. Dodging bullets and evading the gunboat blockade that encircled the small island, filmmaker Dom Rotheroe documented this David and Goliath story of the 21st century.
