From a post on the main board

Who's your all time NBA greatest at each position??

Here's mine:

C -
PF -
SF -
SG -
PG -

Rather than pondering position by position....
I would rather just put five players on the court
Here's my all time, prime-time five:

Magic
Isiah
Jordan
Hakeem
Kareem

These five people, in their primes, could probably take out anybody
Take these five men all at 23-25 years old!!!! Unstoppable!!!

Try to top that five, lol

there's a time out during the spurs v. fakers game, so...

let me add 1 more squad i'd like to have played with

pg - joe dumars (yes over a decade later, some people still haven't figured out that JD was a PG, not a SG)
sg - andrew toney
sf - larry bird
pf - wes unseld
c - artis gilmore

i'd like to see someone try to penetrate THAT lane and come out standing up w/o a bloody nose... :D

i also would've included mark jackson and dennis johnson as PG on a couple of my lists...

here's the start of 2 other ALL OFFENSE squads:

pg - sam cassell
sg -
sf - dominique wilkins
pf -
c -

pg - nick van exel
sg -
sf - bernard king
pf - elton brand
c - TD

I'm from Detroit so I know my Pistons..when you had Joey D running with Zeke..how can you call him a point guard? He wasn't much of a ball handler or distributor..he could get his shot off(classic Dumars rainbows) but in regards to running the offense...it hardly ever ran out of Joe D. I've always thought of him as a classic shooting gaurd..what are your thoughts on that?...

I always considered Joe D. to be a little of both. Didn't he actually
start out as Isiah's backup?? But those Piston squads were not
exactly your tradtional roles anyway....

Interesting lists Cran. I considered most of them (except the last one...
I was a football and baseball player....not hoops) and I tried to combine
the different types of squads to come down to these five. I mean, if we
were to play the Hubie Brown, Pat Riley, "grind it out" type of game, my
five would still excel I think. They just wouldn't be as much fun to watch
But they would still win, as they have all played that style of ball some-
where along the line anyway

I think it's interesting that you don't have WILT on any of your lists though
Not even for your All Offense team?? What about Bob McAdoo for that one?
Nor do you have Walt Frazier for your defensive teams. When dude was
defending against the Earl Monroes, the Jerry Wests, the Big O's, the Dave
Bings and Lou Hudsons and Pistol Petes every night and coming out on top

Still good shit

Maybe that is what cranrab is referring to. But i've just never really considered him a point because Dumars was always best off the ball. I just can never really imagine him running point because he handles weren't the great, he wasn't very quick, and he wasn't the greatest passer.

E,

chuck daly instituted an innovative DUAL PG offense with joe dumars and isiah thomas...

you may be from detroit, but were you watching the pistons 20 years ago?

WAY off topic (JD deserves his own thread), but during his career, i never saw anyone play in the backcourt BETTER than JD... EQUAL to, but NOT BETTER than... and that includes michael jordan...

if you watched what JD was doing (both WITH and WITHOUT the ball), he was KILLING folks... but 2 things prevented major props...

1st, he was playing in a small market on a team that got a negative label...

2nd, he was a lunch pail player who WASN'T explosively athletic in an era where playing above the rim became glorified...

it was fun to do, but if i thought too much about it, i would've missed the game i was watching... :D

yeah, if i had made a TOP ATHLETE squad, wilt chamberlain would get the C slot...

earvin johnson is also absent from all of my lists too...

leave it to the KNICKS fan to knock me for not including clyde...

that's the problem with lists; inevitably, you're gonna exclude someone either intentionally or unintentionally... i included rolando blackman because he was willing to chase and harass his man every night, and still had enough in the tank to launch his own beautiful J...

I was watching the Pistons while Zeke was still in Indiana

I hate I hijacked this thread so this will be my last reply. You are right on both accounts. Joe Dumars might be the most slept on player in recent memory. Coach Daly always said the Dumars was his favorite player..especially on the Bad Boys teams because Dumars was always level headed. Dumars was the ONLY person to effectively neutralize Jordan. There were many games where you held Jordan to low and mid twenties scoring..consistently. Even Jordan said that Dumars was the most cerebral player he ever played against(even as a GM) and Joe D actually made him change his game alot. Dumars was definately one of the best defensive gaurds ever! Then it's not like he couldn't hurt you on the offensive end...a true complete player...but completely modest and humble..thus not very marketable at all..thus was a quiet killer all through his career. Dumars is actually one of my favorite athletes ever..just a complete class act...and i think much of the current success of the Piston's organizaton can be attributed to him.that team plays the way he played as an individual.

Oh no!! I'm GLAD you had Ro down on that list. He's from Brooklyn!!
In fact he went to a neighboring school. Gotta include the home boys.

Remember Darnell Valentine?? He was a harrassing mofo too. Was
only 6'0" tall too. Also, I might include Moncrief on the All-D squad. But
not at the point. At the 3

Didn't even realize you didn't include Magic

C'mon man!! Decade by decade is too easy. I'm trying to
challenge your intellect here. Hell, I might put Billy Owens
on the 90's team, lol. Dude only problem was that he was
ahead of his time. He would fit right in today

Speaking of Owens... what ever happened to him? Thought he was a consistent 15, 8, 5 threat per game?

Since you wanna complain...

If I had to choose 5 it would be:

G - Earvin Johnson
G - Michael Jordan
SF - Larry Bird
PF - Tim Duncan
C - Shaquille O'Neal

Damn....That 5 is mean!!
That's more like it. Only thing I might
change is putting either Kareem or
Hakeem at center...Shaq would get
run down guarding Kareem at 22 years
old. Kareem would sky hook the shit
outta Shaq....

One thing....think Michael would defer
and pass the ball inside to Shaq like
he wanted?? Or would MJ devolve
into the Prequel to Kobe?? Part of
my consideration of my five is how they
would be able to work with each other....
Chemistry. (the one kind of team Cran
left out, lol)

Hakeem was a total team player. Kareem
had no problems defering his offense to
others. The only real shot hog on my team
(every team has one) would be Jordan

I think my squad would run & gun your
ass to death, then when you tried to slow
down the pace (you'd have to), they could
go the "grind it out" route with you too

Isiah and MJ on the ball, Magic on the boards
and Hakeem and Jabbar swating EVERYTHING
out of the sky
