July NPD: Wii climbs to the top, PS3 overcomes 100K hump

Upon first viewing the latest US video game sales data from GameDaily BIZ, we instinctively exclaimed "July NPD!" and shook our heads in dismay. "No, I never lie," replied the NPD, its anthropomorphized form struggling to escape the confines of a bad pun. "The Wii did in fact beat the DS in a month that saw overall industry sales climb to a staggering $925.5 million dollars. The PlayStation 3's clearance sale also gave it the push it needed to defeat the GBA and break through the 100,000 unit barrier, though it still trailed slightly behind the Xbox 360. So much for those analysts, eh?"

And so we all laughed, cracked open a few beers and watched some American football. According the top ten in software sales (presented after the break), a good deal of gamers appreciate the sport. Despite having access to a considerably smaller user base than the PS2, the Xbox 360 version of NCAA Football 08 reigned supreme, no doubt thanks to the system's magical attach rate.

More analysts predict PS3 ahead of Xbox in July :hmm::hmm::hmm:

Pachter ain't the only analyst predicting the July NPD numbers will show the PS3 has finally outsold the Xbox 360. Turns out Lazard's Colin Sebastian predicts the same thing, saying the PS3 price cut gave the console its expected sales bump for July, while the Xbox 360 hardware issues finally coming to light will cause sales to lag. The Wii and DS will keep doing what they do and make Nintendo gobs of cash.

Yes, you can all release your collective "duh" now, but it's still Sebastian's job to say it. He says Activision should see a 200% growth in July, based on Guitar Hero and Transformer sales, whereas EA should expect a 10% decline (remember, this doesn't involve Madden '08 money). Well, whatever the stars tell the analysts, all will be revealed this Thursday by the NPD numbers.

Analyst are full of shit.

its not off base

but its was just for july

more ps3's will sell this year.. but their line up is still shotty and their games still lacking like the early days of the original xbox

wii still a monster no comment there, the wii just prints money and with the holidays people are scrambling to get one for thanksgiving to play wii sports with their sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, grandmas and grandpas after their turkey dinner

360 is still the winner for the season with a solid game line up, the price drop doesnt change peoples opinions, i think most people getting a 360 this holiday were doing so anyway, the price drop is like an early christmas gift for them

the real time to look at this will be nest time this year

more developers will have had more time to play with the ps3 mechanics

the blu ray/hd wars

will MS really have fixed their RRD issue (not including their wireless steering wheel issue and lets hope nothing else is defective)

both ps3 and MS think they are going to take over the wii

:smh:

what they need to do is forget the wii.. wii is going to come out with something later

concentrate on better gaming

sony should have hired their own developers from known solid companies and dropped games like rain

dumb asses, i had such high hopes for yall.. i'll see you sony in late 2008 maybe 2009

Microsoft is still in a good postion. With all the hardware problems they are having. And with the PS3 price drop. They still managed to outsell the PS3, that's pretty damn impressive. Look at that attachment rate.

MS, Nintendo, Sony all agree: July sales numbers were great!

We're always amazed by the endless optimism of public relations departments. No matter what kind of story the sales numbers tell, they can always spin it around into a much sunnier story.

Nintendo was first in console sales last month and first out of the gate with their spin. In a press release they trumpeted the Wii's ability to stay on top despite "industry pricing shifts" (or, more accurately, shift -- the effect of Microsoft's price drop won't show up until the August numbers). July gave the Wii its highest weekly sales rate since December and its sixth consecutive month of topping the hardware sales charts, Nintendo was quick to point out. Nintendo also trumpeted its library of an estimated 800 Wii and DS games by the end of the year. Of course, that will include about 150 Virtual Console rehashes, but hey, who's counting? Besides Nintendo. And us.

Microsoft was next, playing up the fact that the Xbox 360 has now outsold the PS3 for nine straight months despite analyst predictions to the contrary (Wii? Wii who?). Despite being second in home console sales for a while now, Microsoft stressed that the Xbox 360 still leads by a good margin in lifetime consumer spending on software, hardware and accessories. Speaking of software sales, Microsoft is mighty proud of their software attach rate of 6.2 and their habit of placing plenty of third party games in the top ten for monthly sales (20 titles so far this year, compared to one each for the Wii and PS3).

Sony's reaction was posted directly to the company's official blog and talked primarily about the overall sales growth in the industry. When it comes to Sony systems, Analyst Relations Manager Mariam Sughayer says she's happy to see a 61 percent increase in PS3 sales over June, even if that still places the system in third place. It's not just the price drop, either ... Sughayer thinks consumers are buying hardware in anticipation of upcoming software like Warhawk, Heavenly Sword and Lair. Hopefully those buyers won't be put off by some of the middling early reviews for those games.

Analysts Surprised By July's 360 Success, Wii Not A 'Fad'

Following the release of NPD's July sales figures, Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter and fantasy video game prediction market simExchange expressed surprise at 360's outselling of the PS3, with Pachter saying 360 sales should increase with the warranty issue seemingly "of little concern to consumers."

Said Pachter, who, along with simExchange, had predicted the PS3 to eclipse 360 sales with the former's price cut and the latter's highly publicized red ring warranty issues, "Xbox 360 demand was far stronger than we expected this month, with sales just above those for the PS3. We had expected a decline in demand due to the warranty issue and price competition from Sony. We now expect Xbox 360 sales to increase, as the warranty issue appears to be of little concern to consumers, and the recent price cut should stimulate demand."

simExchange expressed many of the same feelings, adding that "the market overreacted to the leaked upcoming Xbox 360 price drop and the warranty issues as deterrents to July purchases, and saying "given the lifetime unit sales predictions for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, the Xbox 360 will continue outselling the PS3 every month through the holidays."

The Wii was the clear winner in July, though, with some 425,000 units sold in North America, a figure which caused Pachter some confusion. "This increase is inconsistent with reports that Nintendo has had difficulty in increasing its manufacturing capacity," he said, "suggesting to us that the company has diverted supply from other areas (perhaps Japan) to the U.S."

simExchange took the news to be a clear indicator of Nintendo's clear long-term success, saying "The Wii’s stock has always forecast that it will lead the other home consoles this generation. The Wii’s August sales future is currently predicting 433,000 units will be sold this month. This implies momentum will continue through the holidays even up against strong software titles for other systems, including BioShock, Halo 3, and Lair. These forecasts combined with July results indicate the Wii is no fad."

Finally, turning to software, Pachter said he was "a little disappointed" by the month's software figures, "particularly after the strong report by GameStop (+49% in the July quarter, implying that software sales were significantly higher) and Canada’s NPD sales figure (+30% in July)."

He concluded, though, that "while some detractors may consider the next generation cycle off to a poor start, we think that improving hardware and software sales indicate strong demand for the still relatively light software lineup on the next gen consoles, and we believe that once a greater variety of compelling software is released later this year, demand for the new hardware will increase."

Hell yes the 360 got a great attach rate. Whenever something outside of a FPS comes along people are desparate.

YOu do know only 22% of XBOX 360's games are FPS or shooters in general right? SO that means 78% of the games are from OTHER genre's. Shut the fuck up and go stock some refridgerators or something. Stock boy's don't need to talk business with men in the room.

when halo 3 comes out..............a good amount of people will be buying 360s just for that game the same way that people bought a 360 for gears of war........

and in november when call of duty 4 and project gotam 4 come out....oh its on.

don't get me wrong, i will buy a ps3 eventually, but because the 360 keeps coming out with heat. i will keep playing the 360.

its still a bit of a spin

you have to exclude the multiplatform games like madden to get an accurate number of what games each system puts out

And whenever anything other than a minigame collection comes out on the Wii people dont buy it.

Why would you have to do that?? Mutiplatform games are a part of systems library just as much as any other game. If you did that then you would also have to exclude all of the multiplatform first person shooters like COD, the Darkness, Rainbow Six Vegas etc. And then the number of first party FPS on the Xbox right now would be one- Perfect Dark Zero. Now that would be a spin.

83% of Xbox 360 Games Aren't FPSs

Or, put in different numbers, only 17% of Xbox 360 games are FPSs. Annoyed by rantings of too many FPS titles (which I, myself, have been guilty of), FPS Source counted up 137 released Xbox 360 games and found that not even a quarter of titles are FPSs. The two biggest genre hogs were Action/Action Adventure (at 26%) and Sports (also at 26%). So as far as I'm concerned, there's a new witch hunt on. Less sports games! Now if...uhh...everyone would stop buying so damn many year after year. Like any perceived imbalance in any consumer market, we need to quell demand before we can talk supply.

17% of most Xbox 360 titles are 'FPS/TPS' [via thexboxdomain]

a few comments made regarding the study

__

I own the system and I have this complaint. I'd like to see this same breakdown for games that are good. Because even though I don't have a number to prove it, my gut tells me that most of the effort is still going into shooters. One also has to wonder how many of the action/adventure games are GTA clones and thus essentially shooters.

Besides, if you take shooters and add in sports that makes up almost half of all games on the system. I think what people like myself complain about is a lack of originality. Not so much the dominance of shooters as the lack of original titles like the PS2 gets. Games like Katamari (which we're thankfully getting), Okami, Shadow of the Colossus and all the wonderful RPGs are the things the 360 is missing. And the system still misses this diversity, IMHO.

Thankfully, for me at least, the 360 is saved in large part by the awesomeness of the XBLA. But if it weren't for that, the system would definitely feel like a wasteland of just sports and shooters.

_____

6% rpgs. Where...?

______

17% of all Xbox 360 titles are First/Third Person Shooters/ PS3 and Wii statistics

According to various message boards on the Internet every now and then, from time to time it’s quite often that you’ll catch posts/threads ranting about too many shooters being on the Xbox 360, or how the Xbox 360 needs more variety in their selection of titles; both being very legitiment observations and discussions. In no way, shape or form am I saying that it is completely untrue. So, I thought I’d take some time out of my day to form a mini study on what software exactly is on the Xbox 360. Based on 137 Xbox 360 games, I found that not even a fourth of them are considered as First Person Shooters or Third Person Shooters, even added together.

The study includes the majority of the Xbox 360 games that have been released or to be released this month(August), as for all other titles; Halo 3 included, were not added as they haven’t been released. Also, XBLA games were not factored in and neither was Virtual Console games for the Wii section of this study.

Now before we go further, let me point out that for a game to be considered an FPS accordingly; it must have the first person perspective view, and contain mainly shooting elements. For a game to be considered a TPS accordingly; it must have the third person perspective view and contain mainly shooting elements as well. Two good examples of these type of genres on Xbox 360 are Call of Duty 3 and Gears of War. Both titles stick with the shooting element throughout the game which is why they are always defined as FPSs/TPSs rather then Action.
