After much hullabaloo over Jon Jones and Rashad Evans’ impending showdown, it appears the former Jackson’s MMA teammates won’t square off inside the Octagon anytime soon after all.

The UFC announced via Twitter on Monday that unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Phil Davis has been tapped to replace Jones against Evans at UFC 133 on Aug. 6. According to multiple reports, newly crowned UFC 205-pound champ Jones suffered a torn ligament in his right hand during his March 19 title win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 and is now set to undergo surgery.

The Canadian Press first reported news of Jones’ injury on Monday.

Evans, 31, is himself a former UFC light heavyweight titlist, having won the belt with a December 2008 stoppage of fellow “Ultimate Fighter” alum Forrest Griffin. The former Michigan State Spartan would lose the belt in his next outing, a vicious May 2009 knockout at the hands of Lyoto Machida which also marked the first defeat of Evans’ career.

Since that time, “Suga” has recorded unanimous decisions against American Top Team standout Thiago Silva and, most recently, fellow ex-champ Quinton Jackson. Following his May 2010 win over “Rampage,” Evans was once again declared No. 1 contender to the light heavyweight throne, but a knee injury to then-champion Rua postponed the bout until this past March. One month out from the match, Evans himself injured a knee, making way for Jones to step in and claim gold.

Davis, a four-time NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler at Penn State, comes off the most substantial win of his career. At March’s UFC Fight Night 24, Davis took another short-notice assignment, replacing the injured Tito Ortiz against Pride Fighting Championships veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Davis ground out the highly regarded 205-pound stalwart over three rounds to take a unanimous decision and run his unblemished record to 9-0.

Since joining the UFC in February 2010, Davis has competed and won five times, submitting Alexander Gustafsson and Tim Boetsch, while notching decisions against Nogueira, Rodney Wallace and onetime WEC light heavyweight titleholder Brian Stann.

UFC 133 is expected to take place at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and will also feature a light heavyweight tilt between Nogueira and former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, as well as a 185-pound affair pitting Vitor Belfort against Yoshihiro Akiyama.

I was really waiting to see this chess match and watch Rashad lose.

Based on his last performance, Phil Davis is not ready fr the deep end of the pool and will get destroyed by Rashad.

Gonna be a real tough fight for him.Evans is experienced and has a huge advantage on the feet. That said,Phil has a great future in MMA and is currently training with a great camp(was in Shields' training camp with Sonnen and Lindland).

BTW...if yall wanna make some good money.Bet for Jake Shields. He is +350 and will beat GSP.

Fam my cousin would beat the shit out of anybody in the ufc

Then why isn't he in the UFC? :hmm:

because his cousin CAN't beath the shit out of ANYBODY in the UFC:lol:

as for the headline....I am not pleased. I was looking forward to this bout:hmm:

This ain't the WWE. :smh:

His cousin would get hurt in WWE. Once he came in popping off about how tough he is, they would kick the shit out of him.
Obviouskly he was talking about this.

:lol::lol::lol:

damn rashad is the most unlucky nigga in the UFC

he's lucky though. jones would've murdered him. he should be able to handle davis. davis' striking is horrible and he doesn't like to get hit.

Interesting fight...

Rashad is a more seasoned striker but Phil shows more techniques standing.

Phil is bigger but Rashad might be a little faster...MIGHT be faster.

Phil has more accomplished wrestling but he struggled to get Gustafson and Noguiera to the ground. Rashad changes levels better, thus far.

Rashad is the bjj black belt b/w the two but Phil is the one who submits ppl and seems to keep fighters on the ground better/longer once he gets it there. Neither guy has highlight reels while on their backs.

Rashad should win via experience but Phil is all upside and Rashad has a hectic year....I might actually be a betting man for Davis.

If Rampage and Rashad both win their fights, I wonder who gets the first crack at Jon Jones' title.

Jones hurt his hand 5 weeks ago because he was embarassing Shogun for 15 minutes while he beat the brakes off of homie and completely styled on him.

:lol::lol::lol:

Davis has a chance, I just think that he needs a few more fights before he gets in the cage with the apex talent. Lord knows I wanna see Evans get that ass beat. I thought he would fight Bader, Hammel, or Griffin next.

Phil Davis Injured, Out of UFC 133 Main Event

Phil Davis has suffered an injury and has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 133 light heavyweight headliner against Rashad Evans.

MMAFighting.com reported the news Tuesday, and UFC President Dana White has since confirmed Davis’ withdrawal. This marks the second time Evans has been left without an opponent, as “Suga” was initially slated to face former training partner Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title at the Aug. 6 event before Jones withdrew with an injury.

The search for a replacement opponent for Evans is currently underway. Former champion Lyoto Machida has reportedly been contacted to fill Davis’ shoes.

Featuring a light heavyweight confrontation between former Pride Fighting Championships star Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and onetime UFC middleweight king Rich Franklin, UFC 133 will emanate from Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

A former NCAA Division I national wrestling champion, Davis has yet to taste defeat as a mixed martial artist. The 26-year-old has racked up a 5-0 record in the Octagon, most recently outpointing Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24 in March.

Evans, 31, has been bested only once as a professional, losing the UFC light heavyweight title to Machida in his first title defense. Since that 2009 knockout defeat, Evans has won back-to-back contest, outpointing Thiago Silva and Quinton Jackson in 2010.
Ortiz in for Davis, Rematches Evans at UFC 133
Despite initial reports that former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz had turned down a main event pairing with Rashad Evans at UFC 133, it appears that “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has answered the call.

UFC President Dana White tweeted news of the matchup Wednesday. Ortiz steps in as a replacement for the injured Phil Davis at the Aug. 6 event, which will emanate from Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Ortiz and Evans have met once before, fighting to a draw at UFC 73. Ortiz was penalized a costly point in the second round of the July 2007 bout for repeatedly grabbing the Octagon fence.

Ortiz recently staved off retirement by submitting Ryan Bader at UFC 132, the 36-year-old’s first win in nearly five years. Ortiz had gone 0-4-1 in his previous five bouts, dropping three straight fights in that span to Lyoto Machida, Forrest Griffin and Matt Hamill.

Like his new opponent, Evans is also a former UFC light heavyweight champion. “Suga” captured the title in 2008, knocking out Griffin at UFC 92. Evans’ glory would be short-lived, however, as he lost the belt in his first title defense to Lyoto Machida five months later at UFC 98. The defeat remains the only blemish on Evans’ professional record, as the 31-year-old rebounded from the loss by posting back-to-back victories over Thiago Silva and Quinton Jackson in 2010.

I have a weird feeling that Tito will win this one:eek:

Yup, me too!!

Cant see Tito winning this fight at all!!

although he is in a win/win situation..he gets to fight top 10 comp and get a nice check. tito was almost on his way from getting cut if he lost to bader.

i guess machida was only going to take the fight he got paid as much as anderson silva makes for his fights. dana white said hell no lol ..
