Iran Says It Seized Foreign Oil Tanker, Escalating Regional Tensions

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran has seized a foreign oil tanker, Iranian news media reported on Thursday, days after a United Arab Emirates vessel disappeared, raising the stakes in the running conflict that has pitted Iran against some of its regional neighbors and the United States.

Several state news organizations in Iran reported the seizure of the tanker, based on a statement from the Revolutionary Guards, which claimed that the ship was smuggling one million liters of oil. The Iranian state news agency Al Alam reported that the Revolutionary Guards seized the ship on Sunday.

The reports did not identify the tanker or its nationality, so it was not immediately clear whether the statement referred to the Emirati ship, the Riah, which has not been heard from since it was traveling in the Persian Gulf late Saturday.

In its statement, the Revolutionary Guards denied Western news reports about a tanker seized over the weekend, the semiofficial Mehr News Agency reported — an apparent reference to the Emirati vessel, indicating that the tanker seized on Sunday was a different ship.

come to the aid of a ship in distress and towed it to shore for repairs. The ministry did not identify the ship or the nation it hailed from, making it unclear in that case, as well, whether the vessel was the missing Emirati tanker.

There has been widespread speculation that the Riah was taken by Iran. The country has long been at odds with the Emirates and Saudi Arabia, both American allies that support opposing sides in the civil war in Yemen.

Last year, President Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 pact limiting Iran’s nuclear program, reimposing economic sanctions that had been suspended under the deal. He imposed new sanctions this year.

Iranian officials have threatened retaliation, including possible disruption of shipments from the gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20 percent of the world’s oil.

American officials have blamed Iran for apparent attacks on tankers in May and June, which followed the new sanctions that aimed to cut off Iran’s ability to sell oil, a pillar of its economy.

has exceeded the agreement’s limits on the size of its enriched uranium stockpile and on how highly it could enrich the metal.

Last month, Iran shot down an American surveillance drone that it said had violated its airspace; United States officials said the aircraft was over international waters. In response, Mr. Trump ordered, then called off, a military strike against Iran.

Two weeks ago, British forces seized an Iranian tanker near Gibraltar, charging that it was violating European Union sanctions against Syria. Iranian officials called for the seizure of a British ship as retribution, and the British Navy reported last week that one of its ships had chased away Iranian boats that were trying to impede a British tanker.

Several Iranian news organizations said the seizure took place near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. But one outlet, Mehr, said it occurred about 400 miles to the northwest, near Kharg Island.

Iran says it has captured a British oil tanker

  • What the UK is saying: The UK is “urgently seeking further information” about the incident, a UK government spokesperson told CNN.

Trump privately moving in a more hawkish direction on Iran as tensions escalate, sources say

President Trump has privately adopted a more hawkish tone on Iran in recent days, according to three people familiar with the developments, as tensions increase in the Gulf.

Previously, Trump emphasized finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis with Tehran, and backed off a planned strike on Iranian positions last month. During those discussions, Trump expressed concern that US retaliation could escalate the tensions in the region. He ultimately pulled back from the strikes citing concern over civilian casualties.

But amid the most recent tensions, Trump has not placed as much emphasis on talks with Iranian officials, according to the people familiar with the matter. That’s due in part to a chilly reception Trump’s public overtures for negotiations received from Iranian leaders.

When he called off the planned strike at the last minute in late June, he assured advisers that if matters escalated with Iran, he would respond appropriately.

Trump has also downplayed the possibility that tensions could increase, noting they’ve already been increasing even after he backed off the strike.

The recent change in tone from the president has frustrated those who think he should avoid wading into further conflict with Iran, believing it could lead him to war potentially.

Audio captures dramatic moments before Iran seizes British tanker

An audio recording released Sunday captured the dramatic moments as a British naval officer warned Iranian military forces against seizing a UK-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident that further roiled tense relations between Europe, the US and the Islamic Republic.

An officer with Iranian Revolutionary Guard told the Stena Impero tanker that “If you obey, you’ll be safe” and demanded it change course last Friday, according to an audio recording released Sunday by maritime security group Dryad Global.

“Alter your course to 360 degrees immediately, over,” the Iranian officer said.

A British naval officer aboard the HMS Montrose, a frigate that was patrolling in the area around the strait, warns the Iranian forces of the consequences of their actions.

“Please confirm that you are not intending to violate international law by unlawfully attempting to board,” the Brit said, also telling the tanker that it must be able to proceed unimpeded in the international waterway.

“Sir, I reiterate that as you are conducting transit passage in a recognized international strait, under international law your passage must not be impaired, intruded, obstructed or hampered,” the British officer said.

The Iranian patrol boat responds by saying it wants to stop the tanker for a security inspection.

”No challenge is intended, no challenge is intended. I want to inspect the ship for security reasons,” the officer said.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard released video on Saturday showing commandos carrying machine guns and wearing face masks rappelling from a helicopter to the deck of the Stena Impero.

UK officials said the HMS Montrose was about an hour away from tanker – too far to intervene.

Iran said commandeering the ship was in retaliation for Britain’s seizure of an Iranian tanker off the coast of Gibraltar on July 4.

Britain said the Iranian tanker, the Grace 1, was smuggling oil to Syria and has refused to release it.

The seizure on Friday comes as the US said it downed an Iranian drone in the Gulf of Hormuz last Thursday – in the latest in the escalating tensions in the region.

President Trump last month called off a military strike against Iran for shooting down an unmanned US surveillance drone.

The US has also accused Iran of being behind attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman in an effort to disrupt international shipping lanes.

Iran is trying to put pressure on European countries that are still participating in a 2015 nuclear deal to ease sanctions Trump reimposed on Tehran after withdrawing from the pact last year.

If war happens it will be directly because of provocation by the United States chicken hawk government under Trump. If it does kick off, arrogant Americans will soon learn that Iran and its proxies are not Iraq and is capable of inflicting mass casualties not only in the Middle East but also in Europe and the U.S. :hmm:

Administration wants war put people have to understand that Iran aka the Persian Empire has been here for over 2,500 years and has never been successfully invaded. From the Deep Cliff Mountain Terrains to a Having one of the most advanced army’s in the Muslim world.

War with Iran will be at least a 50-100 year war. Iran is about 6 times the size of Iraq.

Not to mention that we are 21 trillion in debt and we borrow money from china. I don’t think China is going to finance tens of trillions of of more debt.

Britain tried to flex on Iran with a frigate. BAHWAHWAHWAHWHAW!

That said, Iran is going to keep stepping on the line and won't be happy until a US Cruiser sends a fusillade of Tomahawk missiles their way. Followed by bomb runs by B2's and B52's.

Then they'll understand.

I’m reading John Toland’s History of Japan, 1939-1945. This book, written 20 years after the war shows that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor mainly because they felt disrespected, racially and economically. Japan had built up military might and moved on China and other Asian nations, but the US was punishing them by embargoing oil and other raw materials. They struck out of desperation because the white men they were negotiating with were jerking them around and treated them like less than equals. Roosevelt and his State Department were cold racists and kept dragging the talks out by insisting that Japan move out of Manchuria which was its only source of oil, for example.

Sound familiar?

Iraq, Israel, UAE, Saudi Arabia ... they already don't like Iran and want them gone - especially Iraq.
Jordan is an ally.

And who does Iran have? Weak support from Russia - who are 3,000 miles away. LOL!

I hope you're not blaming America for embargoing and disrespecting a nation that used its military to move on China and other Asian nations?

I really hope you're not. I mean you called the administration "cold racist" for embargoing an imperial force. :smh:

I’m saying that Japan attacked because they felt they had no other choice. And, they knew 6 months in (after Midway) that they couldn’t win. Rightly or wrongly, i think that Iran is feeling the same way now, especially with listening to the screeds from Chump. N Korea too.

Oh ok. Yes.
One of the Japanese General said shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, "I fear we have awaken a sleeping giant."

Iran may posture and bluster to save face, but they know they don't want any part of a war with the United States and its allies.

You’re assuming that you’re dealing with rational people. Remember, nobody really knows whether or not they have a nuclear device which could bolden their steps. The same religious tyrants that run Iran now took the entire US embassy hostages back in 79. And, we could do nothing.

If they have a nuclear weapon, the best they have is a low yield device. Basically on order of what 2-3 of our MOABs or 7-8 Blu-52 conventional would deliver.

But having a nuclear weapon isn't the end all, be all. You still need a delivery vehicle. One that can both target America (or American allies) and penetrate its air defenses.

The Israeli Iron Dome air defense system is no joke and it's constantly battle tested.

Here's a FACT:
Iran's military ranks 14th in the world. Versus a combined coalition of the 1st (USA), 8th (GB), 17th (ISR), 25th (SAU)...
Three of the nations in the coalition are hydrogen munitions capable - that's beyond simple atomic.
So, tell me what a near standalone 14th with no nuclear weapons (or at least low yield atomic with no payload system capable of touching America) is supposed to do against this?

Even your own article, if you bothered to read it, undermines the "enlighnment' session.
However, at $16 billion (€13.4 billion) in 2017, Iran's defense budget falls short of individual regional rivals and is minuscule in comparison to the combined defense spending of countries it is most likely to come into conflict with: Israel's $18.5 billion (plus $3.5 billion in military aid from the US); Saudi Arabia's $76.7 billion; and the United States' nearly $600 billion.

It also nearly encircled by United States military bases and lacks the security guarantees its regional Gulf Arab rivals and Israel receive from the United States.
