Jay-Z Tells Juan Epstein His Takeover Diss Was 100 Times Better Than Ether. Praised Prodigy "At One Point He Was Close To Being The Best Rapper In The Game" & Em Won Renegade
Jay-Z and Nas had one of the more entertaining rap beefs of all time. The battle produced two classic diss tracks in Nas' Ether and Jay-Z's Takeover.

While most hip hop fans tip their hats to Nas when comparing the two songs, Hov seems to still be in denial.

In an interview yesterday with Cipher Sounds and Rosenberg on their Juan Epstein Show. Hov talked about the two songs, acknowledged Eminem killed him on "Renegades" and gave Prodigy props for being one of the best rapper in the game at one point.

"I think in the history [books] when we look back, and I don't mean no disrespect to Nas it's not even close," Hov said. "The record, if we take Ether it's 100 times better."

Jay also dissed producer Ron Browz by saying the Ether beat was terrible.

Prodigy of Mobb Deep and Jay have also had their differences, but Jigga gave the Queens mc praise.

"I think they're fantastic," Hov said of Mobb Deep. "Prodigy at one time was one of the best rappers in the game. I don't know about [best] ever, but at one point he was close to being the best rapper in the game."

As far as Eminem murdering him on Renegades, Hov chalked it up to a bad day at the office.

"I think he's [Eminem] a very intelligent rapper... It's just when you make 4000 songs... I'm a constant collaborator. You know some people are gonna have better days, it's just the way it is."

all mc's have big heads.is it surprising that he woudlnt admit defeat?who the fuck cares really?

On the real...the L he took on Renegade was way worse than Ether..... Em flipped that song so hard Jay should have just took his verse off

I thought Takeover was better too :dunno:

Ether was you look like a camel and you want to be me

truth > fiction

Yeah, because his verse was wack

I always thought ether was overrated, even the good parts.

Gay-Z and Cockafella?
Compared to Beans you wack?

:smh:

and the takeover was hotter than people give it credit for...but at that point..shit was too late...

Damn, Ciph and Rosenberg have done 2 shows in a pretty recent amount of time. I listened to the Quincy Jones episode the other day. I'll have to check this one as well. Now, on to the topic, the verse Jay spit at Nas on Takeover was pretty ill, but that one verse doesn't compare to the song Nas made about him. Had Jay made an entire song about Nas in the spirit of that verse I think he could then claim a tie or victory. Plus, the word ether has become slang. People use it all the time, and it's because of that song. Think about it, how many times have you heard someone say "So & so just ethered such & such.", or "Damn, this is some ether right here.". Advantage Nasir...

:yes::yes:i dont ever hear anybody talking about, "ooooh, that nigga got takeovered".

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I always thought Takeover was better because it basically told te truth about the career of Nas up until that point.

Ether's beat knocked hard and the response was unexpected so that's why many feel that Jay lost.

"Hov seems to still be in denial."

And :smh: @ Jay-Z not giving Ron Browz or Nas credit but giving the whiteboy his due.

I'm a fan of both but no way his shit was better than Ether. Ether had ninjas looking at each other like this  when it came out.

If Jay-Z would have made Ether it wouldn't have been received the same way.

Because he made the mistake of facing someone lesser than him, and a lot of people were naturally going to go for the underdog. Just like people root for Boise State.

Look at the amount of people who hate on Jay-Z on this board. Dude gets a negative topic almost daily. Why? Unlike most rappers he's probably the most guarded, and no one truly knows him, but yet you would think he was Gucci Mane the way some dudes act. Do you think those people would say his song was better? Who makes a diss song and then people go awwww, that was too low of a blow.

The chips were stacked for the underdog from the beginning.

Where I'm from for a guy to be so concerned about another dudes looks, he would be called gay.

Yea, I just went back and read the lyrics to Ether.

Decent, but the only part that really hits is the "proud dad watching his only son that made it".

Pretty much everything else is just opinion/insults.

Takeover was way better to me. That shit came outta nowhere and hit hard like the Taliban. Wasn't really feelin Ether that much, I thought Stillmatic was much better.

Fuck outta here Jay, Nas put ya teeth against the kerb and stomped his timbs
into the back of back of ya neck with Ether.

:yes::yes:i dont ever hear anybody talking about, "ooooh, that nigga got takeovered".

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Right......So, to me that means the song had a greater impact than the verse Jay did. Even though his verse to Nas was pretty gangsta. I can't wait to get home and check this episode out to hear exactly what Jay said about this and all the other topics they spoke about. It should be a good listen.

Ummm, Takeover was done before Ether, after Stillmatic

actually..let me take that back..... the intro to the Blueprint 2 where he got back at nas was hot... but it was too late because Jay first came back with that wack ass Superugly

Even the parts about Jay, jumping from crew to crew and looking to Nas for a co-sign before he made it big? And the part about Jay eating that knife charge on Lance instead of one of his minions eating it for him? The part about Jay saying he was better than BIG? Jay trading his soul for riches? Jay having an entire label behind him while Nas was solo?
But you do hear people saying, "We don't believe you" or "You need more people."
True, but thats the most memorable quote and it wasnt even directed at Nas.

I disagree a little bit. During that time Jay had the momentum as the hotter rapper but Nas was still regarded as an elite mc, especially by his peers. I remember cats were saying Jay picked on a sleeping giant fucking with Nas at that moment. With that said, I don't think Nas was a straight up underdog, more like a very formidable opponent.

Super Ugly wasn't wack, the beat was. It was a poor beat selection, and the hook was terrible. The content was good.

His verses were alright...i didnt say they were wack....but Em came on that song and shitted all over it.....

Em's verse was better, but I wouldn't say it shitted all over it.

I think you need to go back and listen to both verses again.

yeah... that is the way i see it...i didnt see Nas as the underdog.... Nas might not push a lot of units, but dude is a lyricist... you knew he was going to come back hard...just didnt expect it to be as hard as it was ....i dont think Jay was expecting that shit either.... but is why he rushed out that wack ass Superugly

Man. I listen to that shit like once a week. Yo... Jay z is my dude and his verses were alright and even borderline but but Em murdered him on that track man by a mile.... that second verse was a fucking classic by Em..
