Madison Square Garden Company CEO and Executive Chairman James Dolan said on Wednesday that he is considering making the New York Knicks and New York Rangers into separate public companies.

The Knicks and Rangers are currently part of the Madison Square Garden Company, but according to Aaron Elstein of Crain's New York Business, Dolan's idea to branch them off could aid in a potential sale.

Elstein noted that it would be easy for Dolan to "whittle down" his stake in the Knicks and Rangers if he goes through with the separation.

He also reported that Dolan is believed to have more interest in getting involved with music and "cutting-edge entertainment" than sports.

If Dolan does make the Knicks and Rangers their own entities, it will mark the first time that the teams are not owned by the Madison Square Garden Company.

Dolan has been in control of the Knicks and Rangers since 1997, but the results have largely been mixed.

Since an NBA Finals appearance in 1998-99, the Knicks have struggled mightily. They have made the playoffs just six times over the past 19 seasons and are in the midst of a five-year playoff drought.

The Rangers have been far better with 11 trips to the playoffs over the past 13 seasons. That came on the heels of a seven-year drought from 1997-98 through 2003-04.

While the Blueshirts have reached the Eastern Conference Finals three times under Dolan and made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014, they missed the playoffs last season.

Much of the disdain for Dolan comes from Knicks fans due to his perceived mishandling of the franchise over the past several years.

That includes hiring Isiah Thomas as president of basketball operations and head coach, as well as giving out bad contracts to the likes of Allan Houston, Amar'e Stoudemire and Stephon Marbury.

Additionally, Dolan had former Knicks star Charles Oakley ejected from a Knicks game last year and temporarily banned him from Madison Square Garden.

Both the Knicks and Rangers are in the midst of a downturn, and although an ownership change won't necessarily turn things around immediately, most fans would seemingly welcome the exit of the much-maligned Dolan.

James Dolan Lays Groundwork For Sale Of Knicks And Rangers; MSG Stock Surges

New York Knicks and Rangers owner James Dolan could be preparing to sell his teams

well, now he might actually do it. According to a report from Crain's, shares of the Madison Square Garden company have jumped in the past few days, as Dolan is apparently laying the groundwork for a potential sale.

James Dolan, the owner that Knicks fans love to hate, may be laying the groundwork for a sale of the franchise. Shares in Madison Square Garden Co. soared on the news.

Late yesterday Dolan announced he was exploring a spin-off that would separate the Knicks and the Rangers from the rest of Madison Square Garden. While Dolan would remain in charge of the teams, at least at first, putting them together in a separate public company would offer him the chance to whittle down his stake easily if he chooses. Dolan is understood to be more interested in music and building cutting-edge entertainment venues than sports.

If Dolan does in fact spin off the Knicks and the Rangers, it would mark the first time the teams haven't been owned by Madison Square Garden. The Garden has controlled the Rangers since the team was founded in 1926, while the Knicks were launched by an MSG president in 1946. Whenever the Garden changed hands over the years to corporate owners including Gulf & Western, ITT and Cablevision, the teams came along in a bundled deal.

Obviously this is a long way from actually happening, but any potential rumblings about the Knicks being for sale are a big deal. They're one of the most famous basketball teams in the world, play in arguably the most famous arena and the NBAis soaring in terms of popularity.

The most recent team to be sold, the LA Clippers, went for a record price of $2 billion to Steve Ballmer. And that was back in 2014. Should the Knicks actually be put up for sale, they would likely become the highest valued team in NBA history

I didn't pick Ewing because he never got the job done.

man he gave ALL he had...

and NEVER backed down from MJ.

Look at the Celtics and Toronto vs. Bron?

I give that man ALL the respect.

look who was SUPPOSED to follow him...

Allen Houston, Lattrel, Marbury, A'mare, Melo....

Ewing is one of the most under appreciated NBA stars period.

Ewing missed the one shot he ever had for a NBA championship and don't forget he also failed 3 times in the NCAA finals. Regardless of the circumstances winners don't miss that shot. Ewing is under appreciated and by not ever winning a championship he kind of earned that title. At least he won with the Dream Team.

I hear you

but we fail to appreciate

That man gave EVERYTHING EVERY NIGHT

and that is why I HATE when we let white folks create this bullsh*t false narrative that rivals can't be friends...

MJ Ewing and Oak were and STILL are TIGHT

but would KILL each other the court.

NONE of these white so called sports journalists would DARE ask them about that

(well a VERY few did, notice that aint go well)

also Ewing was one of the GREATEST college players of all time forget the cultural impact..

hell he was one of the BEST high school players

and coming from Jamaica (soccer was his first sport)

and one day read up on how Boston treated him as a kid?

He overcame A LOT then the country's pressure and HATRED for the sheer BLACKNESS of Georgetown (way before the Fab 5)

and THEN playing in the cauldron of pressure that is NY?

We can blame a WHOLE lot of OTHER people for them losing too....

coaching decisions, bad management, bad drafts, Charles Smith and a dude named Starks

hell a dude named David Stern with the suspensions.

These aint excuses these facts...

because you aint type ONE lie

but that is a really layered story.

I really hope someone does a proper 30 for 30 and/or book on Ewing's life.

In all honestly Ewing like LeBron for the most part played most of his carrer on flawed teams. Put Ewing with better teams he wins 3 or 4 rings easy. If you think back to those Ewing teams they didn't score a lot of points. That's probably why they resorted to trying to intimidate their opponents. Just too bad Bernard King blew out his knee, that team I believe could've won it all

Man that evaluation on NYK alone is nasty. It's gotta be psychological as to why he's holding on. At that age, I'm selling.

Everybody and their momma wanted Phil Jackson tho.. and the nets drove up the price on carmelo i can't blame him for that

That is NOT true...

Phil was NEVER an exec though!

and the minute he took that FIRST extended vacay?

We KNEW he wasn't about sh*t

He gets NO credit for KP...he had no CHOICE BUT to pick him

that Noah signing KILLED us

Rose took as many of days as Phil

and the way he handled Melo?

wasf*cked

AND he offended LeBron.

We ALL wanted it to work but I don;t agree that we were BEGGING for PHIl

hell MORE people wanted him to bring back DONNIE!

The feeling would be like winning a championship

Well when Dolan stated he didn't know much about basketball why didn't they hire the right people to run (not ruin) the team? Under Dolan all this team has accomplished is they perfected being mediocre.

Probably should of brought back Donnie, I just saying he ain't the main reason why the Knicks suck and shouldn't be taking the blame. I only say this because as a mets fan I wish my owner would put some bread up like Dolan.

Donnie Walsh was the best GM the Knicks had in a long time. He unfucked the salary cap & was building a solid roster before Dolan jumped in & refucked the franchise with the Melo trade.

Putting up the money is 1 thing but when you force your GM to make moves that set the franchise back just so you can have a big name to fill seats then that's a problem. Kicks games at the Garden is 1 of the few sports venues that sells out regardless of how bad the team is. Dolan forced a lot of bad moves because he only wanted to see fans in the seats. They were gonna be there regardless but instead he turned the team into a laughing stock.
