James Bond Producers Are Reportedly Leaning Toward Idris Elba as the Next 007

There are a lot of actors who could play 007 once Daniel Craig retires from the role he despises: Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender (even though he's Irish), Tom Hiddleston (of Hiddleswift fame), David Oyelowo (who actually voices the character in the audiobooks). Hell, even controversially-mustached human man Henry Cavill thinks he has what it takes.

But there's only one actor who should be the next James Bond, and that's Idris Elba.

There's been some back and forth on the subject of Elba as Bond. It began back in 2014, when emails released during the massive Sony hack revealed that then-studio co-chair Amy Pascal told a colleague, "Idris should be the next Bond." And for the last few years, Elba has very strictly maintained that he is NOT going to play James Bond. In fact, he thinks the next Bond should be a woman (might we suggest Thandie Newton or Naomie Harris?).

Now, new reports indicate that James Bond producers are starting to lean toward the idea of Elba taking the role. As the Independent reports:

Director Antoine Fuqua revealed the details of a conversation with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, in which she said "it is time" for a non-white actor to take on the iconic role. Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who's certain the progressive move "will happen eventually", with Idris Elba a reported frontrunner for the role.


It's not much, but it's a good sign that Bond producers are at least leaning in the right direction. (Esquire has reached out to the producers for comment and will post an update if we hear back.) What's interesting though, is that when it comes to the topic of Bond, Elba's response is often that no one is really considering him for the role. This certainly changes things.

I think this is a bullshit story again. Everytime they are about to do a recast, they throw out this rumor. The last two bond films made almost 2 billion combined, so people still want to see bond. This rumor last popped up when they decided to hire Craig. I know he has been going back and forth about doing new movies,so the producers are probably getting prepared to do a new search.

I can't tell if they are just trying to hype up the search (again) or they want to try something different and are seriously trying to gauge public reaction.

Believe me if it is true this time, I won't hate on it.

Man look. I know what y’all mean. Its not the popular thing to say but as a student of film AND as a black man - i know that Idris in a James Bond shoe don’t fit. That’s the reverse of how we trying to roll. Casting Idris is no different than Taylor as Cleopatra or Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher or making The Ancient One a white British woman.

It’s the Cinderella complex that white folks got us runnning on where everybody feels the same and everybody can do the same shit and everybody is special enough to fit the glass slipper. If everybody is special then that means that nobody is.

That’s not reality and even though its a made up character it still takes me out of the story by introducing that narrative. This is why crackers talk about making Black Panther white all the time because they know it riles us up. I dont wanna see that. It is a part of his character to be white. The arrogance. The white privilege. The Euro travels. He can go anywhere white and blend in. He can do any whitegirl and nobody pays attention. He is written like a regular Joe Schmoe that can look rich or poor or kill whenever he has to.

The secret spy world and the Cold War origins all fit with white people. That’s their thing, they can have it. Denzel is the Equalizer and he is American. The race change does change the character, the story of a spy and Bonds narrative.
