Michael Cohen: Inside The Otisville White Collar Prison Where Former Trump Lawyer Is Set To Start Sentence

he prison where President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen is expected to start serving his three-year sentence on Monday over hush money payments made to buy women's silence over alleged affairs with Trump is set up like a "Jewish heaven" for white-collar criminals, one prison consultant has said.

Cohen, 52, was sentenced to a three-year prison term last year for his role in orchestrating hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, ahead of the 2016 election, as well as for unrelated financial crimes.

The lawyer, who has alleged that Trump directed him to make the payments, is expected to report to the Federal Correctional Institute in Otisville, New York—about 70 miles northwest of New York City—to start serving his sentence on Monday.

Cohen is expected to be living in dorm-like accommodations at the prison's minimum-security camp, which prison consultants told Reuters is considered an ideal destination for Jewish inmates due to the range of services it offers to accomodate their faith.

“He’s going to what I like to refer to as ‘Jewish heaven,’” Larry Levine, founder of Wall Street Prison Consultants, said.

Levine, who previously served a 10-year prison sentence ending in 2007 for racketeering and other crimes, said the Otisville prison is one of very few to have a full-time rabbi, as opposed to other federal prisons, which have part-time "contract rabbis."

Michael Frantz, another prison consultant who also previously served time, said Otisville is also considered ideal for Jewish inmates as it has a wider selection and availability of kosher food.

Included on the prison's menu, which is listed on its website, is matzo ball soup, gefilte fish and rugelach, with all kosher items marked with a "K." Additionally, the facility's visiting room includes kosher vending machines, while its commissary also sells skullcaps for $6.

Prison consultants also say that unlike more tightly-controlled facilities, Otisville's camp is not fenced in and inmates can expect to enjoy more freedom of movement.

Working conditions for inmates are also considered to be better than at other prisons, consultants said, with inmates being given "busy work" such as cleaning, to do for a small handful of hours during the day. Prison work shifts at the Otisville facility are also arranged to accomodate daily prayer sessions and Sabbath observances, according to The New York Times.

The rest of their time can be used recreationally, with inmates provided access to a basketball court, tennis area and baseball field, as well access to weights and other exercise equipment.

Ultimately, while the Otisville facility is still a prison, Benjamin Brafman, a high-profile defense lawyer who has represented defendants who have requested to serve their time there, told the Times that the site has been "carved...out as a special location to put Jewish inmates" where they can practice their faith while serving out their sentence.

He just came out of his apartment, made a short one minute statement …. and has now begun his journey.

“There’s still much to be told, and I look forward to the day that I can share the truth,” Cohen, 53, told a throng of reporters in Manhattan before departing for the federal lock-up in Otisville, New York, about 80 miles away.

Michael Cohen Heads To 'America's Cushiest Prison'

Forbes loves lists! It lists billionaires, top paid models, top paid authors, top paid athletes .... and on and on. We also have a list of the "Cushiest Prisons," and nearly every cable news network has jumped on the fact that President Trump's former fixer, Michael Cohen, is heading to Otisville federal prison camp ... one of the "cushiest."
I would think that one would prefer a cushy prison over a notorious one and Otisville is better than most. It is close to NYC and was the choice location for Bernie Madoff but his 150 year prison term made him ineligible for aminimum security camp. According to Bureau of Prisons policy, in order to eligible for prison camp, an inmate has to have less than 10 years to serve. Bernie will have to wait about 140 years for the transfer. In the meantime, Cohen will be incarcerated with former New York State Senator Dean Skelos who will begin serving his 4-year sentence at Otisville in early 2019 ... as will Bill Baroni of New Jersey Bridge-gate fame. Baroni is the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority and a former state senator and assemblyman. Sounds like the beginnings of a good penuckle card game.

I visited Otisville federal prison camp earlier this year to see someone who was in the final stretches of a nine year prison term for insider trading. While he had few complaints, the visiting area was the size of a small cafeteria with uncomfortable seating more befitting of a bus station. There were vending machines that dispensed candy, chips, soft drinks and one with deli sandwiches. The sandwich, tuna, was amazing! For a few bucks, one can enjoy some good NYC deli food. One note, inmates are not allowed to have money, in fact, they cannot even touch the money used for vending, so visitors feed the machines bills and coins to make a selection. In total, there were about 20-30 people visiting with their family members ... and yes, sadly, there were children doing their best to entertain themselves.

There are no Club Feds and even Forbes has overstated by saying that any prison is cushy. This myth started during the Watergate era when politicians were heading to prisons on military bases that had golf courses, tennis courts and swimming facilities. While those amenities are located near the prison camp, they were not for the inmates but the military personnel ... but the myth lives on.

With that said, some prisons are better than others. There are 122 federal prisons in the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) with security levels ranging from minimum (camp), to Low, to Medium, to High (Penitentiary). Almost 60% of all inmates in federal prison are in Lows or minimums. When being designated to one of these prisons, it is not as if the defendant chooses a prison the same way he/she would a Marriott hotel location. There are a number of factors that go into a prison designation including the defendants home address, security level, program availability (one popular one is the Residential Drug Abuse Program) and prison populations. If one has a co-defendant who also may be going to prison, the BOP may decide to separate those inmates, meaning that one person is going to be further from home. It is complicated.
