Cotto's a better fighter at jr middle than he was in his brief stay at welterweight and is the top jr middleweight today (by default, frankly, since Sergio Martinez fights at 160).

I have to agree, but the fact remains... Cotto at any time in his career would get embarrassed by Mayweather. Yet, people want to convince themselves that Cotto even deserves the shot. He was on his way to deserving that spot but he ran into a cheater, an underrated boxer and then a juicer. Forget the cheaters, if Clottey can take a 4th of the fight off and make it debatable... Cotto never did anything at the lower weights and since he doesnt have to drain himself to make weight, he's able focus on being a fighter. I think he's sidestepped a lot of good comp at that division, he's played the game smartly and gotten the BIG fight at his preferred weight. But he is not shot. He lost two fights, one where he was most likely cheated and the other where he fell into a bunch of traps set by Freddie Roach.
With the possible exception of Manny, every one at 147 and, it looks like, 154 will be severely overmatched which is why people keep wanting to see him fight the best middleweight. And if he beat Sergio, then people would want to see him fight Andre Ward.
When Cotto fought Demarcus Corley and he said he was good but not on the level of some of the other greats he fought and lost to, that sealed it for me on whether he was "elite" or not because I was sitting there not being impressed and Corley confirmed it.
But, he still deserves the fight because he's pretty much the last guy standing. Paul Williams fell. Sergio Martinez got tired of waiting and moved up (and found new prey). Manny is on Bob's Cash Out list like Antonio Margarito, he just doesn't know it. Khan and Peterson, for some reason, insist on fighting at 140 when they're both legit welterweights and the money is at the higher weight class.
Miguel is the number 3 ppv draw and the top jr middleweight. If not him, who? He's even more worthy of this fight than Victor Ortiz, who had a one fight win streak.
Ortiz' win was against one the best welterweights... Cotto hasn't fought the best in his current division or any other division in years. Canelo is a better choice in my opinion. Until that last fight, Kirkland was a better option solely off of beating Angulo. IMO, Cotto would not have survived against these guys including Angulo. Maybe the Kirkland that showed up in that last fight.

Cotto beats Angulo by outboxing him. Angulo's tough and he's a pretty fair boxer but he's never been ready for Cotto and he never will be.
I don't see how Alvarez has any better record at 154 than Cotto. He hasn't beaten anyone either.
You already know I agree that he hasn't had a legitimately tough fight since Manny Pacquiao but if the options were him or Alvarez, he was the better choice.
If Margarito slow, shot ass could touch Cotto in that second fight so can Angulo, but Angulo is going to have those real hammers.
I'm not picking Alvarez just off his record, but he has been more active 154 than Cotto and its with guys who have been fighting. Dude has been putting together a nice string of C to B- fighters at 154 and has been looking for a bigger fight. I wish Cotto was actually fighting in the division because Cotto and Canelo would have already have fought by now... imo.
I'll take Cintron on your resume over everyone Cotto fought at 154. I don't give a fuck that Margarito beat Cintron because Margarito is also a cheater and we don't know how far that shit goes back. Cintron's first lost is to Williams and his only stoppage was against Canelo as far as I'm concerned.
By the time he fought Canelo, Cintron was washed up, the definition of an "opponent". I'll take Yuri Foreman over any of Canelo's opponents.
Angulo was/is a nice fighter but he's never been any better than "pretty good". Cotto's not what I consider "elite" but he's always been a superior fighter, just not extraordinary (like Floyd or Shane at his peak).
Now, Cotto-Alvarez would be the preferred fight, for me, than either against Floyd Mayweather.
Cintron was washed up, but shit wasn't Mayorga way passed being washed up and Margarito was severely injuried.
I guess Foreman is cool and I can't argue that too much, but I like Cotto's brother better just off boxing skills even though I don't think that was his weight class.

Man, you know we already trashed him for fighting Mayorga and then fighting Margarito, two bum fighters.
I knocked those two fights (because they were trash) but I don't knock his hustle. He fought name fighters (not good but names) on ppv and won so he looks good to casual fans and made himself attractive for a Mayweather fight, seeing as they would look for someone to help sell some ppvs with the Ortiz fight only doing 1.2 million while Manny and JMM did 1.5.
I understand the business... I also like the business of fighting Canelo who is popular regardless of his resume. Yet, it is what it is. After Canelo stops Shane... I think people will see what I'm talking about.

Canelo has to get in line and put some names on the resume to get this type of fight. I would prefer he have Mosley AND Cotto on it but, as you said, it is what it is. Cotto deserves to be ahead of him.
Cotto on name alone deserves to be above anyone that can face Floyd at this point. Like many have said before, Canelo ain't at that point yet so this is what is on the table now...
