The Man Your Man Could Smell Like wants Marvel Studios to know he's ready, willing and able to become a certain Hero For Hire.

Actor and former football standout Isaiah Mustafa broke into the public consciousness in those unforgettable Old Spice commercials and is about to hit theaters in his first dramatic role in Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, a job he landed when no less than Oprah Winfrey introduced him to Perry on her daytime talk show, so he knows well that, as the Old Spice guy says, "Anything is possible." And the possibility he's hoping for is the chance to play Marvel's ex-con-turned-superhero Luke Cage on the big screen.

Mustafa's a longtime comic book fan and he tells SuperHeroHype that he's definitely placed himself in contention for the role (potential director John Singleton has leaned toward Tyrese Gibson, while studio head Avi Arad has expressed interest in Jamie Foxx), why he wants the job so badly, and just how he handles his ever-increasing comic book collection.

SuperHeroHype: Did I read somewhere that you're a big comic book fan?

Isaiah Mustafa: Yeah, I'm a huge comic book fan!

SHH: How deep into it are you and for how long?

Mustafa: How deep down the rabbit hole would you like to go? [Laughs] For how long? Since 1980 - since I could read, six years old.

SHH: Are you trying to get meetings with Marvel?

Mustafa: I've already had a meeting with Marvel. I talked to them and I told them that I was a gracious reader of their comics and that I wanted to be Luke Cage. So we'll see where they take it.

SHH: We see it, but why Luke Cage? There are a handful of heroes over there that you might be also right for, but why him in particular?

Mustafa: When you say "handful" you're not joking around, but it's because what's going on with him right now in the Marvel Universe. I think all their [early black] characters were these Blaxploitation characters - these jokey, clownish characters - but now they've really developed the African-American characters. Luke Cage has a lot going on. He's this man, he's got all these powers and abilities and he can use them to save whatever major city, but instead of doing that he uses them to help Harlem. He wants to fix his neighborhood, and that's what's so admirable to me. Instead of leaving and going someplace bigger, he stays right where he needs to be and tries to do the best that they can.

SHH: Does Marvel currently have something actively cooking for Luke Cage, or are you trying to help them get a film off the ground?

Mustafa: They have something in mind, I think, and I definitely want them to see that I'm extremely passionate about it. I'm extremely passionate about being that character. I will do anything to get that role. It strikes me. It's very personal to me. I hold onto it. It's something that I desire more than just about anything that I can think of right now, as far as work goes.

SHH: Is there anything over at DC?

Mustafa: I mean, you have to pick what team you're on, and I don't want to say that I'm not a DC guy, but I definitely grew up a Marvel maniac. That's what I read all the time. I don't want to say that I don't like Superman, Batman, Aquaman, all those guys in the Justice League. I think they're all great, but my attention kind of goes towards "The Avengers" and "The New Avengers," "The Secret Avengers" and everything that they're doing now at Marvel I like.

SHH: Do you still have your entire comic book collection, from when you were a kid to now?

Mustafa: I do. They're in storage and I don't read them. I need to go and take a look at them, but I have all my comic books. The problem is that they take up space now. Now that you have an iPad, you can download these comics on your iPad. You just need to get the ones that they have, and their selection is limited. That's the only drawback.

SHH: I'm going to have change apartments soon because my comic book collection has gotten so out of control.

Mustafa: Yeah! At one point in time I had I-don't-know-how-many of those long boxes - I think it was just under ten long boxes. I was well into the teens with the short ones. Then after a while there were shoeboxes full of different comics. I have tons of them. To go through them is pointless, to change the bags on them is pointless because what happens is that you get three into it and you go, 'Oh, yeah,' and you start reading. Then you can never finish doing it. It's always a labor of love, like, 'I could go do this or that - but damn it!'

Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family hits theaters this Friday, April 22nd. Here are a couple of Mustafa's Old Spice commercials: http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/166121-exclusive-isaiah-mustafa-talks-luke-cage

I'm happy for dude and his old spice commercials but somethings should be left alone. If they select him it will be a joke. Here is a prime example where first impression are everything.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time trying to see him as Power Man. I can see him being The Falcon, if DC was to do it.

Dont you know? people cant act in hollywood no more, its all about the special effects, he'll be fine, if vin diesel, sylvester stallone, arnold schwarzenegger , jean claude van dam, showed us anything, is when starting in action films, theres no acting involved just stare into the camera, look tough, and make smart little one liner, and call it a rap, its not hard.

FOR THE LIFE OF ME I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE EVEN NEEDS TO BE A CASTING PROCESS....MICHAEL JAI WHITE IS THE ONLY PERSON THAT NEEDS TO BE IN THAT ROLE!!

At the stat of the article i was cool....when the guy asked him why Luke Cage, dude started talking about what Luke is doing in comics right now....And now i'm like uhmm No. You're lying. You ain't no FAN.

Luke hasn't been helping Harlem in years. He's the leader of the Avengers, he's the leader of the Thunderbolts. He's been doing this for a long time. He doesn't have world saving powers as dude said.

Now i'm worried. I love Luke Cage, and now i'm like man they gonna mess it up.

Chuck, I know you know The Falcon is a Marvel character. But I like the idea of Mustafa as Falcon more than him as Luke Cage. Cage is a centerpiece character while Falcon is a secondary character and Mustafa hasn't shown the acting chops to carry an entire movie. His commericials are great but he should probably start off on another character.
btw, big fan of both characters.

I think he was referring to early Luke Cage: Hero for Hire and not the current incarnation. A movie wouldn't be about Cage as Avengers/Thunderbolt leader but the early stuff with the metal tiara and chain belt.

When he name checked the three "Avengers" books, he confirmed his cred with me.

Damn, good catch! I was thinking of black heroes he looked like, and thought of Black Lightning, and typed the Falcon. I'm an idiot. :smh:

That's why I said "I know you know". Shit, he even resembles how they've been drawing Falcon lately. I can't say on Black Lightning because when they took him out of Justice League, I lost track of him.

Man yall trippin. Let that man do his thang. ANYBODY betta than Tyrese. I think Omari Hardwick would be a good choice for that role and he's got the acting skills to carry it.

I know I'm dating myself, but I used to collect Iron Fist as a kid, and they had a brother who was struck by lightning on a Ferris wheel, and it gave him crazy speed, but it also aged him rapidly. He had a dark blue costume with yellow bolts on it. I can't remember dude's name.

Hold on. I got the Essential Iron Fist in my workout room right now. Dude wore a blue outfit with a big yellow lightning bolt.

Thunderbolt.

That took a lot of digging.

Damn! You that dude! I remember reading that issue like it was yesterday! I remember him running around Fist real fast and popping him, until Fist caught him with an elbow. He was going beat him down, until some kid asked why he was fighting Thunderbolt. When I went off to basic training, my mom let my 3 year old nephew at my collection.:angry::angry:

You do remember it like yesterday because that's exactly what happened and I just read it.

Say no more about little kids and comic collections. I had two younger brothers, one with autism. I practically had to rebuild my collection a couple times and was only able to maintain it once I moved out.

Well it's not like he'd be writing or directing the movie, fan of the character or not. Most actors who play these superheroes aren't fans.

I doubt they'll go the tiara route

Crews is too old.

y'all kill me with this shit.

42 year old Crews is too old to play Power Man, but 46 year old Robert Downey Jr aint too old to play Tony Stark.

and i dont want to hear any shit about being in a costume, cause Iron Man is on screen less than 1/3 of those two movies.

He seem legit as a fan...

and what does it REALLY matter...

We should want the BEST Actor.

Give him a shot, he would be cheaper and I bet get more of a diverse audience of COURSE JAI is the ONLY one but I really think that its SOOO obvious that they will miss it...

so let him if he does bad it will get a reboot anyway with a Q. Tarintino and Mike Jai anyway

^^^^^ This, dude too small to play Luke Cage, White is better choice. The reason why they want Mustafa is because alot of women like him.....
