Is this offensive or are we too sensitive?

NOOSE.jpg

OK before I clicked the link I was saying maybe its a submissive woman or whatever. Once i saw Disney made it it became highly offensive.

:smh::smh:

Why a noose? I mean why not something more pirate like...like the skull& crossbones? Why not a treasure chest. In keeping with the movie theme.
With all the controversy surrounding nooses one would think that Disney's team of marketers and advertisers would think twice regarding this.:smh:

Could not have been better said.

Just one more thing in Disney's long line of raci . . Um, "insensitivity" during its history :smh:

How would you ladies react if your SO gave this to you? What message do you think it sends?

No its not being too sensitive its Disney and their history speaks for itself. Yes a noose is racist in any form and its not the first time Disney has been associated with racism. :hmm:

There's Disney cartoons from the 1940s (available on the internet) that are banned because of their racist content. Even in the hit movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit the charaters such as the weasels were dressed in a style strictly associated as black attire and the jazz band at the club consisted of "black crows." It's all done in a very subtle manner but its there to those with their eyes open.

it's not "offensive"

a noose doesn't necessarily symbolize oppression against blacks. i would reference it more to cowboys and indians and horse thieves more than i would to lynching. not only that hangings still do take place in many parts of the world but i don't think when they do it they are referring it as an insult to blacks.....

If it wasnt disney I might give it the benefit of the doubt but seeing that it IS disney then it is probably meant to be offensive.

Come on now...Seeing Disney's history you don't think its possible

I'm curious, because I believe in symbolism and how powerful it is. I know the ring with two hands holding a heart means you're single or taken (irish claddagh) and three diamonds mean past present and future.

But what kind of symbol is a noose? to white folks? How many people would pick up on a Dead Man's Chest reference over "hang a black man" reference. How many of these things did they sell?

You got to be kidding! Out of all the devices/props used in the 3 Pirate movies the only thing they decided to market was a noose. You must've spent the last 100 years living in another universe to not know any better than this.

So what your saying is in all your years on this planet you have never heard of incidents like the one in the pic below.

What are you trying to say:hmm:

I'm saying I there's no way anyone who is black cannot understand the symbolic significance of a hangman's noose. Jena was less than a year ago. That incident got national attention.

So having said that why would someone black make a statement downplaying the significance of a noose. There's not a black person alive today that wouldn't be upset if a noose was hung on his or her door.

So what was the real meaning for the statement. Think about it! :hmm:

hmmmmm.......:hmm: why would people want that?

You're right, it's not very fashionable...

Disney is the most assed-backwards cartoon network in history...but when has Disney ever been known for 'thinking twice' about ANYTHING...Raven Symone still gets record deals...somebody apparently isn't thinking AT ALL!:lol:

Man, get a grip. Read what I wrote, stop makin shit up. :smh:

I watched all three movies and i only saw nooses when the pirates skeletons were hung and displayed for all to see in the first movie. Maybe there was one hidden in the trees in the other two movies but i never saw it.:hmm:

I want to see the item sold and the people who buy it will be telling us a lot about themselves. :hmm:

Maybe you don't remember the question you typed, "what kind of symbol is a noose?". (Its bolded in red up top) I think you need to get the grip if you believe whites don't know the significance of hanging a noose. When whites do something its for a reason.

In answer to your question the noose is used to reinforce whites image of supremacy. Its a tool used to to send a message of fear. In other words get out of line....

The black youths in Jena were not the ones who hung the noose on the tree in front of the school in Jena that sparked off the violence and later demonstrations. Whites did it.

In addition to the pics click Femme's link then read the comments below.

Man, I'm not going to argue with you about what I meant or the meaning you put on what I said. I was asking what else could a noose possibly mean and how many people would actually catch a movie reference over the exact same type of pictures you posted.

I'm not putting a meaning to anything. The information available speaks for itself for those willing to read it. In addition whites today are still having supremacy rallies. If your really interested in the truth Google nooses + blacks and to be fair then Google nooses + whites. You will see they know exactly what they are doing and there's no question regarding the meanings.

The bottom line is this needs to stop!

I am a huge fan of POTC but the only time I can recall a noose seen is in the very beginning of the first movie.

Why would they choose to use this as a symbol of the movie at all is beyond me.

^^^I agree. I've seen all three movies as well but I dont remember seeing a noose in them at all. I can think of at least 20 different things that would symbolize "pirates" other than a noose...I think [they] chose wrong.

this is what we call an example of pristine capitalism. a niche happens and people take advantage. since race issues had been the biggest money maker for this company, it doesn't surprise me to see this.

do i approve? no
