Is PlayStation 3 Backwards Compatibility Dead? Maybe Not

I've always said they were going to do this and still do. _

The one version of the PlayStation 3 that currently supports PlayStation 2 software—via emulation of the "Emotion Engine"—looks like it's about to go the way of the dodo. Exactly how crushed should those of us be, should we want to experience PS2 classics on our future PS3s? Oh, totally crushed for now, but the future may provide a glimmer of hope, backing us away from the ledge. PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell says there are "possibilities" the PS2 playing capabilities could come back to the gutted PS3 in the most recent issue of EGM.

When asked by the mag if the now BC-less console kills any chance of offering PS2 games via the PlayStation Store, as it does for original PlayStation games, Lempel said "We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles."

Lempell chose not to talk about "specific plans at this point" but that doesn't mean we can't hope. And pray. And start online petitions.

The full interview, which is actually with Sony Computer Entertainment SVP of marketing Peter Dille—he says backward compatibility is "important to us"—is in the newest issue of EGM, which is in subscriber hands now. We hope that 1UP will publish the interview online, in-full, at some point soon.

PlayStation 2 Originals for PS3 as Downloads?

Sony’s Eric Lempel has hinted that PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility could be resurrected for PS3 owners in the form of downloads via the PlayStation Network.

With Sony phasing out PS3 launch models which boasted PS2 backwards compatibility, either via embedded hardware or software emulation, it looked as if PS2 playback on Sony’s latest console was set to become a thing of the past as the platform holder wholeheartedly threw its weight behind its next-gen software drive.

However, PlayStation Network director Lempel has said that backwards functionality could still play a part in Sony’s plans as the technology exists to make PS2 titles available as downloads from the PlayStation Store.

"We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possible," he told EGM magazine, via Kotaku.

Sony currently offers original PlayStation titles as downloads for PS3 and PSP via the PlayStation Store.

Well, you have been calling this one for a while. We'll see if they go through with it.

Let me get this straight though, as of today, right now, i cannot go into best buy and buy a PS3 with backwards compatabilty?

not unless you can find an

80gb model with the motorstorm game included = likely, co worker bought one over the weekend at toys r us.

60gb or 20gb model = highly unlikely.

that would put 360 and ps3 on the same field of backward compatibility. no longer updating it. but instead releasing last gen via downloads.

current gen ps3 is doing it with warhawk and socom.

yeah i was going to go for the 40gb on the day it dropped. waited till the official announcement. that same week before the day of the 40gb release the 80gb dropped in price and i picked it up on impulse while my 360 was out of commission.

now i can play dmc3, soul calibur 3 etc

OK, thanks for the info as usual. For some reason i see value in having a console with BC over one that doesnt. Still dont think its that much of a value to justify buying now when i've waited so long and expect price drops well before summer.
