Is Cotto done or can he redeem himself?

He seems to be looking for gimmick fights, but I was a big Cotto fan at one time and I hoping he gets back to trying to dominate again. I know Martinez is out of the question at this point, but does anyone even see a path were he could get top of his division or is he just finished and he's only fighting for retirement money?

I think he's fighting for retirement money BUT....I also don't think it's fair that cats used to push him aside because he was too offense minded and they ridiculed him for being easy to touch. Now they guy boxes, avoids stupid exchanges and they say he's lost his hunger. I just see a guy who's finally got a great trainer and is actually listening to him. The way he beat Mayorga wasn't pretty and yeah, he was fighting Mayorga, but I was impressed how patient he was and how he stuck to his plan and let it play itself out and still got the KO. Imho he's just too small for 154-160. It's a shame he didn't have Emmanuel on his team 5 years ago.

I agree. Plus him fighting Antonio is about personal redemption.

I agree with this. I don't knock him for changing his style, it's his choice of opponents that I knock. Okay on Mayorga but then Margarito? As Alaska described them, "gimmick fights".

Yep, a gimmick fight.

I'm sure it is for Cotto but that's also one of the main selling points for this fight.

I'm not too keen on their choice of opponents either. I mean Mayorga looks good on the resume I guess and it was a good gauge to see if Cotto could keep it together against a wild, powerful puncher who tends to goad his opponents into fighting his type of fight, something Cotto needed to get away from. I think people will be surprised by how easily he beats Margarito. I'd target Collazo or Cintron after Margarito. Hell maybe even Ortiz after Floyd is done with him. Cotto is just too small to compete with the native 154 lb'ers.

Another question, if it is just for retirement money... why not end it with a Martinez and cash in that last chip on the biggest fight in that division?

How is fighting the guy that tortured you in a brutal match a gimmick? For antonio it is an easy win in his mind. He beat the living shit out of cotto. If you are going to try to get your career back. Why not fight a guy you once destroyed for a title?

For the umpteenth time

Margarito isn't even a fringe contender and at this point, a marginal "name" opponent, so the only thing Cotto gains from this is some type of "personal redemption" and even that's not real.
If Cotto wanted to show he was back and he wanted to show people he deserves to be known as a top fighter, this fight, especially coming off fighting Ricardo Mayorga, wouldn't happen.

If this had happened before the Pacquiao fight, it would sit better.

You still don't get it... lol. Margarito must hold a special place in buk's heart cause dude is a cheat and buk acts like it never happened. He is the only person that keeps going in circles about why people don't care to see him fight and why most people never saw anything special in him. The fact that personal redemption shit is straight soap opera gimmicks to sell a bad fight and avoid a decent fight is something he will never acknowledge. Even though, he understands that Cotto is fighting for retirement money...

I think I do get it subconsciously but I just won't believe it.
I can't say this won't be an entertaining fight because anything can happen but there just shouldn't be a reasonable, knowledgeable boxing fan who thinks this is the best fight for Cotto or for boxing except in a gimmicky, pro wrestling type of way.

What makes you guys so funny is you make it about me. Here is how I see the fight. Antonio has a chance. He got beat down just like cotto did when he fought manny. I dont mind being outside the crew on this. Just like cotto rebuilt himself after his defeat to manny. So can antonio. I hope it turns out to be a great fight. It sure has the elements for a great fight. What happens if antonio wins again?

It's about you cause you make conflicting statements all the time. Margarito shouldn't be boxing period. Antonio doesn't have acareer anymore, he is Arum's personal Mayorga.. ie fall guy.

And if Margarito wins... so what. That's the point. Who will Margarito fight that he has a chance at beating? Of the two Cotto has the skills, but he won't fight anyone. Margarito is a bum that'll fight anyong but can't beat anybody.

He;s pretty much at the end of his career, he;s just playing it safe and making his money. I hate that those fights killed his confidence (mentally), smh.

Cotto I believe cannot 'redeem' himself because he would be out of his league at this point with the people he would have to beat to prove that point. Margarito, even though he beat him, is no real win at this point with the scandal and the ass whipping he took from Pac. He's no longer one of the most feared in Boxing. If Cotto steps up in competition to a PBF, or Manny again, or even a Martinez, wins which would put him back in the elite class... He will get deal with pretty severely IMO. I believe he was as good as he was ever going to get, but he is damaged goods at this point. A name, who will wins some big fights, but always a notch below the elite...

Funny. What conflicting comment have I made? Or do you need Merce77 to reply in the thread first? The guy came back and fought the top pound for pound fighter and lost. Guess what? Everybody has been getting their ass lit up by Manny. You issue with Arum is your issue. Me, I like the fact they get to fight again. It really is a redemption fight for both guys. If you are not interested cool. Just stop acting like a child whenever I say something your crew doesn't agree with. It is old. I'm just trying to talk about boxing. It is that simple.

Cotto was beating top fighters before the Margarito fight and his rep wasn't rehabilitated when he was beaten by Manny. Now instead of rebuilding it fighting good fighters in/around his division, he's fighting in a string of silly fights that mean nothing. He's becoming Butterbean.

I just hope he doesn't end up being fed to Chavez Jr.

Next logical step, especially if he finds a way to lose.
Matter of fact, I'll call it: loser gets fed to Chavez Jr.

So we're just going to forget that in his previous major fight, Margarito was savagely beaten by Shane Mosley? That he had done nothing to earn a fight with Manny or for the 154 title they fought for?

What's old is this talk of a "crew". That's old. Messageboard martyrs are not interesting.

You understand that Cotto isn't fighting to improve his standing and that only interesting thing about this fight is the revenge angle, but you don't understand that this is a gimmick just like having his fights against latinos on Puerto Rican day. You are skipping over what happened before Margarito's layoff and you are acting like he earned the fight with Pac. You are damn near troll status with your post.
