Insider says Nissan has "12-14" months to survive

Times are tough at Nissan.

The automaker announced plans last month to lay off approximately 9,000 employees, representing 6.7% of its global workforce, and to cut production capacity by 20% due to declining sales, primarily in the U.S. and China.

The Financial Times, citing insider sources, has now reported that Nissan is seeking an anchor investor to help the automaker survive a make-or-break period over the next year.

“We have 12 or 14 months to survive,” a senior official close to Nissan was quoted as saying in the FT report published on Tuesday.

Some sources said Nissan was seeking a steady shareholder like a bank or insurance group, though it hasn't ruled out a rival automaker like Honda, which Nissan is already working with on the joint development of vehicle electrification and software technologies as part of a partnership first announced earlier this year.

Nissan already counts Renault as a major shareholder. Renault previously saved Nissan from near bankruptcy in 1999 but has started downsizing its stake in the past several months, from 43% to just under 36%.

Separate sources close to Renault told the FT that Renault would be open to selling some of its shares in Nissan to Honda, as Honda's support for Nissan would ultimately benefit Renault as well.

Nissan's lineup has suffered over the years from limited model redesigns, although that is slowly starting to change with planned introductions like a redesigned 2025 Murano and 2025 Armada/Patrol. The automaker also doesn't sell hybrids in the key U.S. market, which has hurt its performance as the segment is growing.

A bright spot is the partnership with Honda, which will help Nissan expand its EV lineup. Mitsubishi may also join the partnership, potentially providing Nissan with access to plug-in hybrid technology.

You know how I feel. Fuck Nissan! Fuck their trash ass CVTs! Fuck them Altimas ripping down the street with ratchet feet hanging out the windows blasting Sexxy Red!

Damn. Sounds like the end of an iconic era. I grew up loving their cars. Looks like they just couldn't keep up after their quality took a hit.
It ain’t the quality brother. Imagine living in the Caribbean when beets came through and crush the building. BYD is beets and Nissan is cane.

This where globalization as well as the economic downturn effected the auto industry. Once companies like GM started buying shares in foreign companies (like Saab, RIP) the quality began to decline. Fiat bought Nissan and that's where their issues began...a shit company buying a fairly decent car company and then run it into the ground with poor quality. The other factor was the safety standards which required all these safety features and fuel standards. Engines were made lighter with more plastic parts that fail quicker than the older engines.

Toyota Cressidas were mean.
87 is when the first Acura Legend hit the scene.
Mercedes with Hammers on em.
Jettas with ground effects kit.
Suzuki Samurais.

I miss the designs that used to come out then.

If fuckin' Mitsubishi is still selling cars, Nissan ain't goin' no damn where!

C'mon son!
You seen the price of an avg Nissan vs Mitsubishi though??? Aside from the GTR or Z, for what they're asking... Who'd buy one vs the competition??? Especially when everything is CVT aside from the trucks???

Nissan isnt the only ones, most American car companies are going to be in the same boat.
The problem with American car companies is they still sticking to the old ways and China is actually doing things in leaps and bounds with their cars. United States is still stuck in the 20th century.

Man in DC the Max's & Cressidas along with the 300Z's were the shit. When the Legend's hit the scene especially the coupes those joints ruled.

I copped my Jetta in '88 and immediately took it to the shop kit, rims, new piped out leather interior & system. Recently I was telling my younger cousins how having a Jetta was damn near as good as having a Benz in the late 80's early 90's, chicks used to love that joint & we had a club roughly 40 of us Jettas, Cabriolets, Golfs, Fox's etc. Sam's Car wash was like going to the club on most days, then hit Haine's Point.
