I told a teenager to pull up his pants the other day…

I was driving near a strip mall and saw a teenager with his pants sagging, showing his underwear for everyone and their mother to see. I pulled up next to him and asked him to pull up his pants. Though he sounded somewhat scared and nervous; surprisingly, I didn’t get a “fuck-off” response or any backlash from him. The kid was quite polite and respectful.

My take away:
• We need more grown men both in and outside the home being men…doing our part to set these kids straight and to teach them how to act/look the part.
• First impression is a lasting impression. Even if you’re a good kid, smart, etc.; if you look like a thug or unkempt, people will treat you as such.
• Kids/teenagers are going to act their age (that’s how it’s always been and will be) – adults need to act theirs as well and set the example for the youths.

Spoke with an older brotha about this. Said he doesn't wanna sound like a CAC when he sees a kid with pants hangin low, he says...

"Young man, you should respect yourself and pull your pants up. Don't do it for them, do it for yourself."

Never got an angry response yet. So far...

I don't generally tell em nothin in the streets, unless my wife, or some other grown woman/women are near. These lil dudes down here in New Orleans usually wanna jump stupid, and the situation could easily take a bad turn, especially since my patience is short if I'm tryin to help (which is exactly what it is) someone. But when they come through my studio, I don't allow em across my door-seal without makin em pull their pants up. Either that or find another studio to record ya project. I generally sit down with em to see where their heads are anyway, and try to drop a few quick life gems on em. I spent about 4 hours preachin to some youngsters that came through in March. We didn't even get any work done, and I made a point to show them that I was missin money in order to steer em in the right direction. If you can do it in a manner that shows you have their best (future) interest at heart, rather than just tryin to tell em what to do because you're older, you can usually get them to comply without any problems.I always approach with a "young man" or "lil brotha", just so it's clear I'm reaching out with respect. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one taking some action. It will always take a village... 100

Much respect. It will take time, but eventually things will get better, it has to. If its done collectively, and with respect and compassion, enough young folks will see the light. I tudor elementary and junior high school kids and more of my time is spent on life skills as appose to accademics. They're receptive to it, and I enjoy sharing my lessons learned so that they don't have to make the same mistakes.

I asked a teen to do it because I was out with my sister and her kid in a mall. Tons of people walking about, and I just asked dude "My dude, can you do me a solid and pull your pants up. There's kids around here. He was hesitant at first, so I just asked him his name and talked to him for a bit. Some girls were walking near, so I did the Barney from How I Met Your Mother line "Hey have you met my friend Anthony?". Handshake, then bounced...saw dude later in the mall, pants pulled up, still talking to the chick.

I'll say it depends on what region or city that you are located.
To say that to one of these young punks in Chicago you'll more likely get a "Fuck You!" while he reaches in his pants like he has a gun.

This is a good thread. I do, on occasion, make corrections to some of these young Brothers. I've had only a couple that did not comply because they were insistent that they were making a (an outdated) fashion statement.
When my sons were school aged, it was more frequent. My wife and I would make surprise appearances at the schools and all of the kids were just glad to see that someone gave a shit enough to come and check on them. Hell, they'd drop dimes on our kids before we could even have a word with the teachers if they did anything out of character.

If there are a group of young men, observe and try to determine which is the alpha and approach him. Works with girls too. The others will follow their lead.
Kids want established boundaries. If they don't have them, they'll keep venturing out onto the horizon until someone reigns them in. The earlier the better.

I dont understand why this ignorant crap is still popular!!!! Fads and trends come and go, but this mess wont leave for shit!!!!!! Its irritating and infuriating to watch!!!

Boys are just that when you catch them one on one.

It's when they're around their friends that the pack mentality kicks in.

As a medical provider, I always ask these young men to pull their pants up. I will not see them if their underwear is showing. My staff knows now and if they know the person, they will ask them first. Have never met with resistance. I have never disrespected them, just as some of the other posters have stated, just ask with a little respect and usually they will comply.

this sound like something i would say or have said, usually if you dont speak at them you will get a better response.

But before she could do that, some niggas came in, and I froze up more than she froze up. If she would have said anything, I would have said, "Hold on, let me finish." But I can''t say nothing, because she's not saying nothing. How do I look saying, "Hold on"? That would be like I''m making her my girl.

Never did nothing. Only thing I saw was all three of them in there and that nigga talking about how fat her ass was. I got up, because the nigga sounded sick. I don''t know if she's with these niggas, or if she's mad at me for not protecting her. But I know I feel ashamed-because I wanted to be accepted and because I didn''t want no harm done to me-I didn''t say nothing.

Tupac on why he didn't stop a potential sexual assault.

here was a young black man who went to jail essentially because of peer pressure..How many young black men are in prisn or a fucked up situation for the same reason?:smh::smh:

I see it too often...teens from good homes...good parents...get together + forsake home training for this fake ass image we have in our society of how black men/women are supposed to conduct themselves

whats the confusion..LSN mentioned how peer pressure is a huge factor on the bad decsions young black men make.I just showed an example using the most prominent outspoken "thugged out" black male anyone's seen in 25 years. And he ADMITTED to succumbing to peer pressure:smh:

one of the best parts of my day is waiting for the light to turn green then screaming out to a bunch of philly santa clauses "pull up your pants cuz you look like a fucking faggit bitches". I waited till I got a new car cuz my last one stalled after I did that shit 4 blocks up.

Man, I can write a book.

I'm in my 30's and there are some cats I came up around that didn't have to ask for anything. Parents worked hard to provide education and a stable home/neighborhood environment, but they HAD to seek out trouble. Committing robberies because Eightball & MJG had a hit record. Wanting to form gangs and wear flannel because the dudes in Menace II Society did. Deciding to thug, because Tupac......well Tupac was Tupac. Just a bunch of impressionable ass dudes with no concept of consequences from these actions stemming from parents not putting boots to asses like other parents did.

To a larger point, I always tell anyone who'll listen that we have to take more responsibility for the images of blacks in media and culture in general. An impressionable teenager will see a sexualized image of Nikki Minaj, or a caricature nigga like Lil' Wayne and say "okay, is that's how I'm supposed to be." There are not too many depictions of us that will counteract such images. (They already try to shape opinion about our President, shitting on him every step of the way and you can catch Olivia Pope every week being a white boy's sidepiece) It's will always be some downtrodden, negative, stereotypical image of us that'll dominate and influence not only perceptions of ourselves from others, but more tragically, perceptions of us from our own.

Thats almost a verbatim quote of what I tell my kids!
"If you don't respect yourself, no one else will!"

Correct! Young black kids are killing each other, dieing, going to jail trying to emulate these fools and they are laughing all the way back to Beverly Hills!!!
Selling out their own people!
:angry::angry::angry:

I used to wear my pants stupid baggy, occasionally they would sag, but that was because I lost weight or couldn't find my belt.. Sagging always annoyed me to a degree, even when my own shit was somewhat sagging.:dunno:

This is common, but not universally true....

It's not. It's already been mentioned in this thread that some kids who come from good families with parents who are great examples still behave like knuckleheads.

It's not an exact science.

This sagging epidemic is starting to get worse,,yesterday on the subway platform on my way to work, I saw this dude sagging with the top of his bare ass crack out

I almost threw up in my mouth,,,sooo wasn't expecting to see that shit first thing in the morning were most are dressed professionally or decent casual heading in to work :puke::smh: He stuck out among the crowd like a sore ass thumb:smh::lol:

So is that whats hot in the streets now, having part of ur bare ass-crack out with your homies? :smh::smh:
