What?! who goes around patting cakes? I thought Patty was the baker and they were asking him to bake them a cake. And for many folks that name their son Patrick, they often call them Patty or Paddy.

Esther Martinez I'm not southern but It was always Patty Cake. And you're right about "Patty Cake ... Baker man..." and right about Patrick =Patty or Paddy. Both the Irish and Italians use the nickname. Same for girls: Patricia often becomes Patty.
