It snowed like crazy yesterday so when I got home from work I immediately started shoveling my driveway. A couple of minutes into it a white chick that lives a couple of houses down, who I’d guess is between 30 and 35 years old, pulls up and ask if I need any help. I said no, thinking she was trying to get some business for her kids or something. She asked if I’m sure I don’t want help, cause she’d like to borrow my shovel when I’m done and thought if she helped me I’d be inclined to let her. I start thinking, why would I have this white woman in my driveway helping me shovel. I’ve got two sons that would help me if I really needed it. I definitely didn’t want her help and I think she knew it. So why did she throw that “do you need help” line out there. I was insulted. I wouldn’t have minded if she’d just asked to borrow it without the pretense of trying to do me a favor. Anyway, my question is, should I have let her borrow it?
 
I would've let her borrow the shovel, it's no harm in that. And she probably offered to help you with yours so that you would feel obligated to help her with hers

I would have let her borrow it when I was finished if she'd just come on out and asked for it, without the bait.

My sons weren't home yet and I had just bought a new shovel so I was trying it out.

That was her way of breaking the ice with you. Where this could lead to who knows. But being she's 2 doors away I would keep it real. That is just too close to home. I would've loaned her the shovel however having a good relationship with your neighbors is usually a plus.

I'm in good shape, so I wasn't in any physical distress. Yeah I had another shovel break the second time I used it so I wanted to see how sturdy the new one was.

Damn op is mad suspicious but I the same way too I guess...but I think she simply just wanted to borrow the shovel...white ppl are curteous/nice to a fuckin fault...it took me 3 years to get used to how nice my coworkers are...they prolly racist as hell on the low but on the surface they are very helpful...she wouldn't have just felt right borrowing your shovel...she offered to help to earn the right to borrow it...nothing more imo

There is no way she could have earned the right to borrow it. She didn't take into account how weak that would have made me look with her out there helping me.
