Hustlers Are Result-Orientated While Worker Bees Are Task-Orientated

Early on, I learned the hard way task management software such a to-do list or the Microsoft Outlook task management feature is not only inadequate but in some cases detrimental. I see a lot of to-do list all over nowadays on my iPod/Windows Mobile all the way up to stuff like BaseCamp. And I personally think all of it is a bunch of novelty crap that people get distracted on thinking it is a solution to something. This is a classic case of faceless corporations pushing stuff to the critical mass and the critical mass simply adopts it as a solution, not knowing they adopted the downside. Kinda like a web site operation adopting pay-per-click advertising but not knowing they adopted the risk of fraud by shady cats who know how to fake clicks and split the profit with the pay-per-click provider who don’t care because the web site operation foot the bill.

The biggest problem with to-do lists and task-management software is they turn people into being task-orientated people. They write down a task and they check it off and feel accomplished or whatever for the time being. So then they think the software is cool, they write tasks, check them off and walking around feeling accomplished. But here is the rub, if you ask them what they accomplished that matters – they don’t know how to explain that. All they know is they checked off a bunch of tasks.

This goes beyond computers; this is how most people job resumes are. Their entire resume talk about tasks performed on a job, not any substantial accomplishments. This is the number one make-over I have to do when I help people with their resume to help find a new job. And the more I talk to these people about how they manage the daily grind, it comes down to a legal pad with a to-do list, Microsoft Outlook Tasks or some AJAX web-based task-management web site that suppose to be cool or whatever. And I just stare at them because they spent their life just working off a task list and not knowing what they accomplished. I will go there and say I met a lot of task-orientated, non-accomplished people at a previous employer (ok, Georgia-Pacific) who fell right into that trap game and stuck out like a sore thumb when a private equity firm (ok, Koch Industries) took over and started to see where to make cuts. And those downsized people had a hard time trying to find a new job because all those downsized task-orientated people had on their resume is meaningless tasks done for their previous employer. These are people who fought battles and never really won a war, kinda like how the United States did things for the past 50-60 years.

The solution I provide to people, especially after they were laid off and can’t find a job is to transform their career approach to being result-orientated, not task-orientated. I served in the military, we had mission objectives and whatever it took to accomplish the mission, the end justified the means. I grew up in the hood where the end result was to keep the rent paid and keep food on the table and whatever it took to make it happen, it had to be done. I get into this middle-class working environment and cats around me are good workers and ish, paying the bills when they get paid on a two-week interval. Nice little award trophies in their cube desk for outstanding work during a quarter. I remember all the workers during 9/11/2001 listening to the radio realizing the good days are not around anymore. And by 10/11/2001, it got ugly with the corporate downsizing efforts. When some of these people get laid off after working years at the same company with little accomplishments, well, they needed to learn how to hustle. And to hustle, you have to be result-orientated, not task-orientated.

A good example of being result-orientated and task-orientated is what people do when they are laid off. Most task-orientated people write down a task saying go to the unemployment office, fill out applications, read the ads and complain how someone from India or Mexico stole their job. Result-orientated people know the kind of job they want and find out exactly how they will get that specific job then do what it take to make it happen. They research the job they want to get and the job requirements. They make sure they meet the job requirements and if they don’t, they work on getting the skills real quick to meet the job requirements. They learn about the company business and the financial reason why the company has that job opening in the first place. Then they focus on creating a presentation package to sell what the employer want to see in a job candidate. Meanwhile, the task-orientated cat is still looking at job web sites, trying to screw around with ish like social networking web sites and wondering why no one called them for an interview and start blaming people in India or Mexico again for stealing their job. The task-orientated person is doing the job-search process while the result-orientated person is doing what it takes to make an employer say “we would like you to work for us” and if you want to make it in this 21st century workforce, you better learn how to hustle which means you better learn how to be about results.

And this is where I can tell these task management and to-do list software ain’t hustler tools. These software do not address results. The to-do list and task management at best try to throw tasks into “categories” and that’s the big problem – results are not categories, they are accomplishments. What I prefer is the “mind mapping” software because they have a better focus around objectives and ideals.

Boring Ass To-Do/Task List

This is an Outlook Task list. All this does is be nothing more than a list to check off and to me, this is bland and it makes life bland. All you do is pretty much create a task, assign a category and other attributes, add notes and check it off when you think it is done. You suppose to say “woo-hoo” when you check it off, I guess. You will see this same to-do list crap on PDAs, iPods and other devices like the Wii.

Hustle-Orientated, Purpose-Driven Mind Map

visiobrainstorm.jpg

In this example, I’m using mind-mapping to organize what need to be done. I’m using Microsoft Visio brainstorming component in this example. This is actually real stuff and I just copied them from my real mind map. See, it ain’t another to-do list- it is how I maintain those thangs. When I see this mind map, I know my main goal is to keep a tight household so in order to do that, I realize I have mow the lawn and keep the wild birds happy and chirping in the back yard. So when it time to mow the lawn, I’m not complaining because I know I have to keep a tight house. The same way I have no problem doing my laundry and ironing for hours because I got to stay fresh and wonderful. I don’t need the task details because I just do what it takes to make it happen and I hustle.

It is plenty of mind-mapping software out there. The best mind mapping tool out there to me is just a blank sheet of printer paper and freestyle on it how you want to do things and then focus on what it takes to get it done. You can draw the same circles with a pen yourself and stick it up on the wall or refrigerator. Speaking of refrigerators, I don’t do shopping lists anymore as I have a mind map of the food groups that will keep a brotha healthy and satisfied, nothing specific. When I get to the store, I just choose the best option for that food group which gives me flexibility. The mind map shopping diagram actually helps me have fun in shopping and I get to save more money than others that just go into the store grabbing stuff.

At Fooky, Inc. it is about the results and mind mapping is the tool of the trade. This may explain why many people think Fooky, Inc. fell off or why they ain’t seeing nothing from Fooky, Inc. yet. That is because we ain’t into broadcasting the tasks and personally, that’s a need-to-know thing. What we focused on is the result and when we ready to show the results, the real question is: are you ready to handle the fact that Fooky, Inc. was on the grind all that time making sure we can deliver results while most of you cats thought wrong about the information retrieval game?
