here is the popstar Prince, the androgynous, multi-instrumentalist who sings about sex and spirituality in the same breath. And then there is Prince the enigma. It's this second Prince that has created a great pop-culture mystery - the story of a vault holding thousands of unreleased songs.

Prince grew up in Minneapolis and that's still where he records most of his music. Following the success of his blockbuster Purple Rain in 1984 he was able to build his own recording utopia, Paisley Park.

Since then, much of Prince's music has been recorded within its walls, making it a place of pilgrimage for fans. The building is at the centre of one particular legend - the idea that if Prince was to die tomorrow, he has so much unreleased music, he could release an album a year for the next 100 years.
Does it exist?
Susan Rogers recalls Prince's real-life heartbreak being the inspiration for a particularly magical night of recording: He came into studio and recorded this ballad. It starts with spoken word. Prince is speaking to Wally, a dancer in his crew. He's telling him, "I want go out tonight and meet someone new." He goes into this chorus. It's beautiful, just beautiful. There's a crescendo. The song gets huge. It breaks down. He says, "I'm not going out any more." The background vocal arrangements, the expression of it was just gorgeous. Of course he played all the instruments. We finished recording the song and then Prince said to me, "Erase it."' He said it very calmly. I could feel the fan in me screaming "No!" I said, "Think about it. Wait til tomorrow at least." He reached over and hit record. He erased it. It was gone.

i think the Vault is a myth. Sure he has some unreleased material but i dont feel theres a treasure trove of classic music that he's keeping hidden from the public. I think most of the unreleased material has been released in The Work bootleg series.

15 years ago the fans would go crazy for this news. Now. Not so much.

"Jordan can still dunk!!!"
"So."

Shit, I wanna hear 'em. Some of those songs are at least 30 years old.

I think it was when he was on Arsenio when he said that some songs he just didn't put out because he felt it didn't match the tone of whatever album he was working on at the time.

The vault is real, prince is addicted to recording new material.
Truth! Dude was and still is a prolific songwriter! It's his life! He's sacrificed relationships and family for music so I believe there is a vault of music and he's even said so himself that he has 1000's of songs that have never been released!

I can believe it. I think that he'd shuttered himself in and away from the public for so long. I imagine that he kept himself preoccupied with recording.

Read Kevin Smith's tale of his time at Paisley Park, he says Prince's assistant confirmed dude has a bunch of unreleased usic and videos

All artist have unrealeased music. They make so much music for a cd and from that music they pick the songs that fit into the theme of that particular cd and that fit the time limit of that cd.

I would LOVE to sit back and hear some of the unrealeased music that Biggie, Jay Z, Kanye, & Nas have in their stash.

I wonder if Puff new Biggie was going to die and that's why he had him put out a double cd

I wish I still had all those 12 inch versions of his songs, starting with "Erotic City" and "She's Always In My Hair".

On those 12 inch versions, he'd stretch and solo.

Search for Ultimate Prince which is an official compilation release. It has a lot of those extended versions.

?uestlove re-tells the story of the infamous "Wally" song that never got released.

I definitely believe, hell they say Dr. Dre got a ridiculous vault too. Ive heard T.I., Trey Songz, Jay z, and Andre 3000 in different interviews saying they recorded multiple songs with Dre. Thats just a few of many Dre done vaulted

It's possible. When you have your own recording studio that you don't have to pay anyone to go and record shit for you you can just go, vibe, and then bounce.

I sit and vibe all the time into my phone, record something and don't do anything with it (largely because I don't have music biz connections, because if I did I'd sell the songs to make some loot)

Prince has tons of stuff just like me and my recorder, but many are likely mostly, partially, or not even close to finished. Writers, man, we have a sweet thought and we just go. It could hinge on something so simple:

You left out for work late today, and you saw a pretty woman jogging down the street. You leave out the same time the next day and you see her again. Now you are always late for work trying to see this beautiful women you have never met. Straight out of "Just my Imagination"

That's a song right there if I cared to write it.

Then there are pieces of songs, not stolen Blurred Lines style, but for example at the end of Just my Imagination there is a line said not in the lyrics, "I never met her, but I can't forget her." That's the kind of things that I do.

To write, all I need is a seed, and not even a large one. I just never had any connection to the biz in order to get my talents out there.

The Vault is real. Former Engineer Susan Rogers said she put the first collection together by collecting all his recordings from various recording studios and literally stored it in a bank vault they had installed into Paisley Park. and that was 20 years ago.

Doesn't mean there's a lot there that's really good, but if you just go by the quality of his b-sides in the 80's and 90's there's probably some really good stuff in there

Get the One Nite Only record (not the live version) but the studio version. I am one of the only people who has it. I suggest you hop to it.

I know this is true

He also has a ton of movies and documentaries that have been made that he wont release.

Your statement alone speaks volumes about your musical knowledge. Lemme cut to the chase: You're ignorant.

Im sorry, i must have missed it, but since when was Prince gay? Last i checked, he has been surrounded countless beauties, married twice and never been rumored to be involved in any gay scandals. So again, where does your info come from?

The Vault is very real and does not compare to any other artist. I want to hear his recording with guitarist Steve Vai, the sessions with D'angelo and Questlove. He records everything, music and video.

The Vault is real and I have heard tracks that are unreleased and only circulate among a select view, such as tracks like Cosmic Day, etc.

The quality of music in the vault is real, lesser quality tracks tend to make the album cuts due to label policy, etc.

Take for example: The Holy River on Emancipation, below you can hear a superior version which features a duet with alter ego Camille. Could only imagine the final edit.

The videos are there also.

Songs from the vault are stolen, given to one nightstands, girlfriends, etc
