Hundreds of "missing" black holes have been found lurking in dusty galaxies billions of light-years away.

"Active, supermassive black holes were everywhere in the early universe," said study team member Mark Dickinson of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tuscon, Ariz. "We had seen the tip of the iceberg before in our search for these objects. Now, we can see the iceberg itself."

The finding, detailed in two studies published in the Nov. 10 issue of Astrophysical Journal, is the first direct evidence that most, if not all, massive galaxies in the distant universe spent their youths constructing supermassive black holes at their cores.

It could also help answer fundamental questions about how massive galaxies such as our Milky Way evolved.

"It's as if we were blindfolded studying the elephant before, and we weren't sure what kind of animal we had," said study team member David Elbaz of the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique in France.

Using NASA's Chandra X-ray and Spitzer Space Telescopes, the team detected unusually high levels of infrared light emitted by 200 galaxies in the distant universe. They think the infrared light was created by material falling into "quasars"—supermassive black holes surrounded by doughnut-shaped clouds of gas and dust—at the center of the galaxies.

The new quasar-containing galaxies are all about the same mass as our Milky Way, but are irregular in shape. They are located 9 billion to 11 billion light-years away and existed at a time when the universe was in its adolescence and between 2.5 and 4.5 billion years old.

For decades, scientists have predicted that a large population of quasars should be found at those distances but had only spotted a few of them.

The new finding brings observations closer to theory. "We found most of the population of hidden quasars in the early universe," said study leader Emanuele Daddi, also of the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique.

The newfound quasars confirm what scientists have suspected for years now: that supermassive black holes play a major role in star formation in massive galaxies. The observations suggest massive galaxies steadily build up their stars and black holes simultaneously until they get too big and the black holes suppress star formation.

The new quasars also suggest that collisions between galaxies might not be as important for galaxy evolution as once thought. "Theorists thought mergers between galaxies were required to initiate this quasar activity, but now we see that quasars can be active in unharassed galaxies," said study team member David Alexander of Durham University in the UK.

The Universe is a self sustaining machine, remarkable.

Have u ever seen a black hole what color is space black black hole shit aint there its some fake shit white people made up just like the invisible man you know what its an air pocket in your house if you walk into it its gone make your lungs fall out i know you cant see but trust me its there. Me and my people have done studies on air pockets and they are dangerous so be careful

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

But seriously, I don't think the holes were missing... I beleive they were just recently opened by an Alien Armada coming to conquer this side of the galaxy...why you think the billionares of this planet are investing in private spaceships. Think people, think!!!

So... should we set our phasers off 'stun'? I'm ready!

You won't be able to see one with the naked eye. But dude you are seriously limiting you thought process, but hey that's your view it's not my job to change it.

100 years ago we were sailing wooden ships and looking at stars though telescopes.
Now we're fucking shooting massive scopes in Space and discovering black holes.

It scares and excites me to see what the next 100 years will bring if we don't fuck it all up!

Son, you can't be serious. The reason you cannot "See" a black hole is because light cannot escape them. They are so powerful its ridiculous. You can actually measure the intense gravity around them. They swallow planets and galaxies for fucks sakes. I cannot believe you said that.

Half of the shit we're finding out now is just being rediscovered, ancient civilizations of the past had vast knowledge of the cosmos and there is no evidence to support the fact they had advanced technology to accomplish this feat neither.

OK real talk, with all the black holes popping up, I couldnt help but remember a show I saw on the history channel where the mayan calender shows the world going kaput in 2012... think those guys were right (I mean they predicted their own demise:eek:).

I don't think the world will end literally. But something catastrophic may occur. Each cycle of the last four cycles have ended in some type of destruction, this one (the fifth one) will more than likely be no different.

A multitude of things can happen and I have previously covered a bunch of them before. All I know is that those who are lucky will be able to witness a event that only takes place once every twenty six thousand years.

For anyone insterested in watching the special that aired on the history channel

Whew! Thats a better way of looking at it. And thanks for the vids, I missed a bit on the history channel so Imma be catching up on it

I have seen a couple of these Mayan civilization documentaries in the past. I actually caught this one at the end but never did see it from the beginning. The Mayan civilization was surprisingly pretty acurate in many facets of thier lives and in their predictions. From when to begin planting and harvesting to the best times for conceiving children to sacrifice. And they did it all by precise calculations. Using building techniques that were pretty advanced, even by today's standards of accuracy was definately a feat.

They were also a very violent people but at the same time they were convincing in some of the ways they lived. Let's just say that I hope I live past the date of Dec. 21st 2012. lol. I hope nothing bad happens but if the Mayan's were correct in thier predictions, there is gonna be something remarkable for those that survive turbulant times.

I read the title as Hundreds of Missing Black Hoes found. I was like Damn I didnt know there were so many missing hoe's

I wonder if this could help explain the speed in which the universe seems to be spreading away from each other. If these galaxies with all those black holes are much much heavier than the majority of the universe and are dispersed nearer to the edges of the universe that might explain the speed. Because that mass/gravity would be pulling the rest of the universe towards it.

Many ancient civilizations had "beliefs" and theories.
It's only now through modern science that we are proving these to be true.

:lol: Missing Black Holes When did they go missing and who lost them come on WTF is really Going On
"Missing" meant they thought they should be there but couldn't prove it-- i.e. a missing link. Grab a dictionary and read the first post, Marvin Gaye.

Jesus... I could imagine the story beyond the headline... "After an FBI raid on the home of Pikestreet, AKA Brother Revolution, hundreds of missing black hoes who had been trapped like livestock in the basement of a madman, some for as long as eight years, were freed from their deranged captor."
