HS Runner Crawls to Finish to Win Title for Her Ailing Coach

San Francisco high schooler Holland Reynolds showed unbelievable determination after collapsing just two yards from the finish line during a recent state meet. As a race official rushes to her side, she rejects any help, knowing that if she is touched she is automatically disqualified. Instead, she drags herself across the finish line. Because she did, her team won the state championship.

She l More..ater dedicated the race to her coach who suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease. The finish begins around 1:12:

Reynolds, 16, a junior, has been a distance runner since she was in third grade. She arrived at San Francisco University High School as a fast freshman in 2008, ended her first season as the team’s top runner and has been the lead runner for the cross-country team ever since.

Her coach, Jim Tracy, 60, arrived at University High School in 1994 and built both the girls’ and boys’ teams into perennial state champions.

Reynolds said Tracy was the best coach she had ever had. “He always tells the truth,” she said. “If you ask him, ‘Well, how do you think I did today?’ he’ll tell you, ‘You had a bad race,’ ” she said. “It’s because of his honesty that when you receive a compliment from him, you know you’ve done really well, and it makes all the runners want to strive to please him.”

she is still a loser

I ran cross country in HS....shit is NOT easy. For her to do what she did took guts and determination....and heart

things you obviously lack...not to mention a functioning brain since her action WON HER TEAM THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

fucking dumbass

Respect to all athletes, and you have to commend the girl for the courage. I can relate to this having been compelled to run 13km cross country, at 4am in the dark and dank mornings of my country when I was in boarding school.... Cross country takes a lot out of you because the surface is what it is... You through mud pools, gravel, grass, concrete...whatever,..

Thought it was that high school helerdy thing. I was getting ready to fall out but, that chick did her thing thought she was about to die. Shit was scary as hell.

It's that simple.

That's not inspiring, that's just stupid. What if that dumb Muthafucker slipped into a coma? With that being said, ill give him some foolish respect.

It's a team/time effort. Have any of you cats run cross country?

Scoring

[edit] Individual Results

Team Score Place Blue Team 1 1 Independent n/a 2 Yellow Team 2 3 Yellow Team 3 4 Blue Team 4 5 Yellow Team 5 6 Blue Team 6 7 Independent n/a 8 Blue Team 7 9 Yellow Team 8 10 Blue Team 9 11 Yellow Team 10 12 [edit] Team Scores

Team Total score 1 2 3 4 Tie breaker Blue Team 18 1 4 6 7 9 *Wins tie Yellow Team 18 2 3 5 8 10 Note on examples, there are usually 5 scoring runners on each team, 4 is for brevity. When two or more teams of cross country runners compete, a score may be compiled to determine which team is the better. Points are awarded to the individual runners of eligible teams, equal to the position in which they cross the finish line (first place gets 1 point, second place gets 2 points, etc.). Teams are considered ineligible to score if they have fewer than the required number of scorers, which is five. Only the first five runners in for a team are counted towards that team's score; the points for these runners are summed, and the teams are ranked based on the total, with lowest being best. In the event of a tie, the rules vary depending on the competition; often the team that closes scoring first wins, though in the US NCAA ties are possible. In high school competition, if two teams tie, then the victor is decided by the sixth and seventh runners, whose scores are added to the top five of their team.
The lowest possible score in a five-to-score match is 15 (1+2+3+4+5), achieved by a team's runners finishing in each of the top five positions. If there is a single opposing team then they would have a score of 40 (6+7+8+9+10), which can be considered a "sweep" for the winning team. In some competitions a team's sixth and seventh runner are scored in the overall field and are known as "pushers" or "displacers" as their place can count ahead of other runners. In the above match, if there are two non-scoring runners and they came 6th and 7th overall, the opponent's score would be 50 (8+9+10+11+12). Accordingly, the official score of a forfeited dual meet is 15-50.
