How Was Thing A Thing?

In 1990, Bell Biv Devoe had the world on lock. Their debut single POISON became an instant dance classic, and the three former members of New Edition were on top of the world. As a followup to the mega successful POISON, BBD released their 2nd single, DO ME! which took the charts by storm matching POISON at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs. A bunch of little kids were running the streets singing “Do me baby.” Not only did we not know WTF we were saying, we didn’t realize how problematic the 2nd verse was:
Backstage,
Underage,
Adolescent
“How ya doin',”
“Fine,” she replied.
I sighed, “I like to do the wild thing.”
Action took place
Kinda wet,
Don't forget
The J, the I, the M, the M, the Y, y'all,
I need a body bag.
Did Ronnie Devoe just pen a verse about statutory rape? Did Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins just let that slide? Did the producers? The label? The programmers and DJs? The people? NO ONE SAID ANYTHING (in my defense, I was a pre-teen when this was released)! This is a classic hip hop, smoothed out, on an R&B tip with a pop feel appeal to it song, and we just let that problematic ass verse slide. How was this ever a thing?
