I worked in the wireless industry as a sales rep for 1 1/2 years. I was working for a company that paid 100% commission
and expected you to cover the cost of equipment
and to give back your commission if the customer did not complete the first 6 months of there contract.
Example:
Commission on an Iphone 5 was $50
Equipment cost of equipment was $525
If the customer did not keep the contract for 6 months and 1 day your chargeback was
Your Commission ($50)
+ 1/2 of the cost of the Iphone ($262.50)
= Total Chargeback out of your check (-$312.50)
(most of the time you were on an equal share system, usually a two-way split $156.25 is a lot of money)
In my area, our chargebacks were the highest no matter what big hitter
sales person/people who came in out of the company couldn't improve the numbers.
One month I put 2,000 miles on my car (with no mileage reimbursement), put in 60 hours worth of work per week,
sold more contracts then the previous month and got a check for -$76.
No joke. I owed them money.
I pretty much gave up on that job and did the bare minimum and three months later I was fired (this happened in May 2014).
So after countless applications and numerous interviews,
I came to the realization that I need to create my own job.
A co-worker at that job did the cell phone repair on the side
and made a little change (about $150 a month just catching them when he had time)
I did a search and there was little competition in my area. (mostly people who sold hair products and urban clothing nothing serious)
I knew that I could make a killing because I was witness to countless people with broken phones.
I am not going to lie to you.
I had to sit down a brainstorm for at least 4 days straight.
This was not my first idea
I wanted to be a social media management company specializing in small businesses (which I still want to do), a restaurant,
freelance photographer, youtube star, buying and selling used textbooks,
and other ideas too numerous to name.
These things were my passions but they were not my skill.
So I thought, If I make a business on my skill then my passion will come later.
And That's what I did.
I will post more on how I got to my first meeting with a bank
(Spoiler Alert: It didn't go so well)
