I feel what you re saying. The thing is most athletes pick a easy major like philosophy or Human Development some shit they can go to class 1 day a week and pass with a A or B. Some don't want to choose challenging courses or grammar classes because they are too hard or they will interrupt with their practice.
Me being a D-1 athlete i choose an OK major but i take only 12 credits than the 15 thats required for athletes. But back to your question they don't speak proper English because 1) Most are from the hood 2)They don't want to take a grammar course 3) They don't want to choose a major thats too challenging.

It all goes back to high school. When the wrong language is spoken in high school it is not corrected. That way of speaking, correct me if I am wrong is cosidered "black". Just watch TV, on which African American show is proper english spoken. We need another cosby show IMHO.
Let's move pass the black athlete and just say athlete. Speaking doesn't make you smart, intell., or mean you know any thing. The gift of the gab is what you call it. Let's give 'em credit for being a professional athlete. And one athlete doesn't rep who i am nor speak for me.

To answer the question, like many others have said, these kids are told they're going to be in the NFL or NBA from the time they hit their first jump shot at age 5, so they just get passing grades and keep moving on up. The parents are as much to blame as the teachers, b/c there is no way you don't know your kids can't put together a sentence.
I'll give you an example: I mentored a "student/athlete" at a Big 10 school (of top of his personal athletic adviser, tutor for every damn subject he could ever want, and the groupies that did most of his homework. Kid didn't know how to read a syllabus, didn't know how to research and write a term paper, and every speech he gave in speech class was about some athlete. To top all that off, the kid's course load consisted of bowling, pool, coaching of sports, criminal justice (ironic how most athletes wind up all being in criminal justice together), history of black athletes in sports (another jock class), and so on and so on, and this kid is on A FULL RIDE (and on fuckin' probation). Meanwhile, there's some cat working 2 gigs and in debt up to his ass while maintaining a 3.0 trying to finish school.
These cats don't realize the pros is a pipe dream till it's too damn late, then they're screwed. Blame the schools and the parents, IMO.

this is something that really needs to be addressed. It sets a bad example for children. It says as long as you can dribble a ball, you do not need to be able to speak english well. It also makes it look like most black males speak this way.

The reason I said "BLACK" athlete, is because 1. I'm black, 2. I don't give a fuck about cracka athletes, and 3. 9 times out of 10 white college athletes do not speak like a nascar fan from the Appalachians. Why the hell would they get credit for god given talent?jb692480 said:

Running back is Marshawn Lynch. Probably the best Running back in this years draft but mad slept on. He's mad hood. He got shot at earlier this year and the shooters called his mother and appologized once they found out it was lynch.

I disagree for several reasons. For one, scholarship athletes are getting tuition, room and board, clothing, books, and per diem money all provided to them. At an in-state school, this is at least 20k; out-of-state, you're talking 35-40k PER SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE. Two, with the scholarship, said athlete has the opportunity to major in whatever field they choose, with ALL THE TUTORS YOU COULD EVER WANT for FREE therefore, they can decide what major fits what they want to do career wise and will allow them to make the most money career wise (if this is a goal) should their sports career not pan out. Case in point: I had a frat brother at my Big 10 school who majored in pharmacy while playing football. Realized early on he wasn't going pro and decided he wanted to pursue that major. 5 years and almost 200k in scholarship money later, he got his degree in pharmacy and now makes 100k+ per year, lives real nice. IMO, yes, the school is making money hand over fist, but the scholarship is payment enough.
On top of what I typed above, the majority of D-1 schools don't make huge tons of $$$ on sports. You have your O$U's, Florida's, Oklahoma's, etc, but what about your Baylor's, Northwestern's, etc? What about the athletes that DON'T play football or basketball? Should a athlete on the women's swim team get the same cut of the pie as the star LB at SEC university?
I just feel that a full ride is good enough. Hell, most athletes just have to STAY ELIGIBLE, which you can do with a 2.0 GPA; the average student on a scholarship has to bust his ass academically to KEEP the scholarship.

they cant speak proper english because that isnt what they're focused on. and like its been stated, they've been speaking the way they have LOOOOONG before they got in front of a camera. it comes from growing up around certain people, but that is no excuse. if they'd been taught at HOME how to speak properly and learn when and where to use their language skills, then it wouldnt matter so much.
i know when i was growing up my mother insisted we spoke proper english. even though she's from the deep part of south in GA. she was pretty articulate herself. and given the fact that i was sent to a private school, i got it in my head that i was getting a better chance than a lot of other people. i compared the way people spoke at school and how they spoke in the hood and i was like, "damn". now yea sure you're going to talk hood when you're in the hood and around your people. but when u go out among the general public whom you KNOW full well do not speak the way you do around your friends and probably wont understand 95 percent of what you say, you'd better switch your dialect real fast. its a poor reflection on yourself AND the race.

What's wild is I'm one of the heartless high school teachers that will fail an "athlete" in a heart beat. They think I'm trying to ruin their lives or don't care but dig this:
1. Don't show up late to my class just because you run track or play football; the football team never breaks .500 so you ain't all that special.
2. Just because you're an athlete, you are still required to write in complete sentences, bring books and pens to class, take tests and make up any work you missed while you were out chasing a ball. No special privilages.
3. You can't talk to me any kind of way because you play sports, you're still a child in my eyes.
4. You're here to get a diploma. Get than and then start smelling the roses in your shit.
5. You have a below 2.0 GPA and you're arguing with me that a college is accepting you on a full ride regardless and that you'll be in the NBA/NFL in a few years...
I have this argument daily, especially with below C average athletes. Someone is telling them otherwise. I can't do the pass them to get by thing because that not only fucks them, it fucks our community when they come back to work and can do nothing but be assistant to the assistant coach of a Pop Warner team.

to keep it real, nobody speaks proper English...what we speak here in America is a very bastardized version of the King's English....with that fact being stated, the question is why don't people speak the bastardized English that is commonly viewed as being soothing to the ear???

But this is the answer to the Dr. original question. Marcus Garvey instructed people, blacks specifically, not to be condescending in talk. If someone isn't on your level vocab wise, then be tactful enough to slide the definition in when speaking, it is a common practice. But when known educated brothers and sisters speak to less educated peoples and use phrases like "do what it do" and "na-mean?" it only accentuates the anti-intellectualism running rampant in our culture.
I don't believe in the term "ebonics" because the phrases aren't enduring, they are simply forms of slang. Language distinguishes the speaker. I don't care how brilliant the idea, if it can't be articulated or expressed properly, it will either be stolen by someone who can give it the proper spin, or it will die in the mental womb.
