Abraham Lincoln has virtually saved the United States from otter destruction.
He actulally proved to the world that democracy could be a good and lasting form of government. Also the fact that the Confederates lost the Civil War made the United States a more tighter country. For example people in the United Staes were considering themselves not as Americans but as different ethnic groups according from the states that they were born ie people from Virginia considered themselves as Virginians, Georgia as Georgians and so on. After the Civil War people in the United States started to call themselves Americans, not Illinoians or Virginian or whatever but just Americans.
