Hope Solo and the Double Standard

SEATTLE — Sponsors and teams continue to bench NFL athletes charged with domestic violence, but Hope Solo continues to play for the U.S. Women’s National Team despite her domestic violence charges. On Thursday night Solo, a UW graduate, is scheduled to start at goalie in a nationally televised match versus Mexico.

This week Nike suspended its contract with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson based on child abuse charges, but the company has been silent about Solo’s domestic violence charges.

Police say on June 21st Solo repeatedly hit her nephew and half-sister. KIRO 7 obtained photos showing bruising and bleeding from the boy’s ear. The pictures also show scars on her sister’s neck.

Peterson is charged with abusing his son by punishing him with a switch. Nike released a strong statement about Peterson saying “Nike in no way condones child abuse or domestic violence of any kind... We have suspended our contract with Adrian Peterson.”

KIRO 7 sought answers from Nike after finding out the company hasn’t said a word about Solo’s charges. This is a link to a Nike commercial featuring Hope Solo from 2011. http://vimeo.com/26291704
KIRO 7 asked Nike and the U.S. Women’s National team to comment on Solo’s charges. As of Thursday afternoon we have not received a response.

Solo’s next court appearance in Kirkland Municipal Court is Nov. 4. The judge agreed to move the date back due to Solo’s soccer schedule.

When Roland Martin brought up the domestic abuse case of female soccer star Hope Solo during a Morning Joe panel, things got a bit tense.

Earlier this year, Solo was arrested on two misdemeanor counts of fourth degree domestic violence assault against her sister and nephew. After pleading not guilty to both charges, she will face trial later this year. Throughout her ongoing case, Solo has yet to lose major endorsement deals with companies like Nike and Gatorade.

Martin and the Joe crew were discussing the Arizona Cardinals’ release of Chris Rainey — a practice squad player who has a history of domestic abuse arrests — when the ex-CNN’er asked why there’s no similar media outrage over Solo’s story.

Citing ESPN “lauding” Solo during a women’s soccer highlight reel, Martin asked, “Domestic violence is a national issue, should we not be questioning why Hope Solo is still playing on the women’s soccer team, and Nike — who dropped Adrian Peterson — has said nothing about Hope Solo?”

“Whoa,” panelist Katty Kay interjected. “I’m a little skeptical of that. Look, that’s one example of one woman beating another woman, with countless examples of men beating women.” She added that Solo should face the same “retribution” as her male counterparts, “but let’s not try and use that as an example to suggest that women are as guilty of domestic violence as men are.”

When Martin protested that he’s not doing such a thing, Mika Brzezinski asked, “Then what are you doing?”

“I’m making the point that if we’re saying domestic violence is a national issue — and it is — we must be vigilant across the board,” Martin clarified. “There should be one standard.”

Our own contributing columnist Joe Concha echoed similar thoughts Thursday when he suggested the media has been apathetic about Solo’s case due to gender double-standards.

The NFL's handling of the Ray Rice domestic violence case has opened a belated discussion on how professional sports enable crap behavior in their athletes, and the private horror of domestic violence for its victims. But in the flurry of firings and bannings and panel appointings in the NFL, one professional sports league has done nothing to discipline its own high-profile athlete accused of domestic abuse. After all, she has a World Cup to qualify for.

The Washington Post's Cindy Boren rightfully takes the Seattle Reign and US Soccer (and their fans) to task for largely brushing aside domestic violence charged faced by superstar goalie Hope Solo. Earlier this year, Solo was accused of physically attacking her 17-year-old nephew and half sister in their home during a drunken disagreement (the nephew tried to fend her off with a broom). When she was ejected from the home, she hopped a fence and circled around to an unlocked sliding door, re-entering against their wishes. She's pled not guilty to two gross misdemeanor charges.

But she plays on. She played last night. And there are no plans to take her off the field.

Here's Boren with more on why:

Solo, who is also on the Seattle Sounders roster, continues to play as a big year for women's soccer is looming with qualifying this fall for the next summer's World Cup.

"We are aware that Hope is handling a personal situation at the moment," said Neil Buethe, U.S. Soccer director of communications, told USA Today last month. "At the same time, she has an opportunity to set a significant record that speaks to her hard work and dedication over the years with the National Team. While considering all factors involved, we believe that we should recognize that in the proper way."
"She has an opportunity to set a significant record" is among the least sympathetic excuses for not benching a player facing domestic abuse charges I've ever heard. Right before "Yeah but she was drunk!" or "That kid looked at her weird." Records be damned; Hope Solo screwed up.

As Boren points out, Solo's case highlights the fact that domestic violence isn't always a man head butting a woman and breaking her nose because she refused him sex. Sometimes it's a woman calling her nephew "too fat to be an athlete" and then physically attacking him. Sometimes it's not a professional athlete. Sometimes it's your neighbor. And no matter who it is, it's not a matter that should be minimized or ignored.

Nobody gives a shit about female soccer until the Olympics or World Cup time. The also don't care about War Machine damn near killing his woman because he was a UFC fighter.

When I say nobody I mean the general public.

The NFL is the most popular US sport and also dominated by Black men, the US cares about this.

Also in life there are double standards, this is one of those times.

You're actually arguing my point.

This, however, is a double standard that men specifically should be completely irate about.

The outrage isn't about domestic violence, or child abuse. It's about what it's always been about: tearing down black men.

Not defending their actions ( I need to put this disclaimer in, because people will assume ), but a lot of white men have done a lot worse, and received half the attention.

Since Hope Solo is both white and female, she gets a pass. Even from our own.

Here for it.

Funny thing is if her nephew was physically able to fend her off and kicked her ass, he'd be the bad guy.

Ray writes:

If Hope Solo had been MALE, she'd have been crucified in the Media, and we'd have heard for WEEKS about how soccer is a bastion of wife-beating and female-oppression, and how soccer all needs to be reformed (by women and their thousands of wealthy, thuggish organizations) to Make the World a Better Place. More manipulation of mass consciousness by appealing to the Female Is In Constant Danger triggers. It's cowardly and criminal, but that's the way we do it here in Femerica.

I tend to agree...

The fact that we focus our energy and policy on violence against women is tacit approval of violence against men. The problem isn't violence against women. The problem is violence against anyone.

OP, great drop.

I hope this is the year of holding white people's feet to the fire on double standards.

The problem with this one is the polar opposite of it, that has run this country since 1492, the black male (the absolute empathy) vs. the white female (unproven and undeserved empathy.)

Hard, hard truth...that is in the process of being exposed.

This sh!t RIGHT HERE!

Plus the fact the nephew was 17 makes him a minor and her a child abuser. AP and Ray Rice all rolled up in one white woman :smh:

Well, OP: CAC feminists are [predictably] lining up to defend this bitch:

No, Women’s Soccer Does Not Have a Domestic Violence Problem
Or, why it is very, very stupid to compare Hope Solo to Ray Rice.

The most privileged, protected and as a result laziest mentally weakest demographic on the planet is the white woman.....

period.
