Hookers in Germany must plug prostitution parking meter to work on the streets, Bonn officials rule

Hurry up, Hans, the meter is running!

Officials in the German city of Bonn just introduced a prostitution parking meter, where hookers pay $8.60 to receive a ticket good for one night's work on the streets.

Prostitution is legal in Germany, but officials say collecting taxes from streetwalkers is far more difficult than from women working in brothels.

They see the meter as the answer.

"Thanks to this new method, we will be able to tax them in all fairness with the others," Bonn city spokeswoman Isabelle Klotz told AFP.

City officials expected the flat-on-your-back tax to generate about $288,000 in new income. The hookers feed six euros into the street meters, and out pops their pass for the evening.

Any working girls found on the streets without a metered ticket face hefty fines. The tickets are good from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with no limit on customers.

The system went into effect this week in an industrial section of the city known as a meeting ground for hookers and their customers.

Authorities believe about 200 women work as prostitutes in Bonn.

In NYC, that price would be a million times higher with a tow-away fee if the johns stayed overtime.

I got off the train in Bonn years ago before the reunification of Germany. Bonn used to be the capital of West Germany. Now Berlin is the capital once again. It's a quaint town. I sure don't recall seeing any women walking around like the one in the photo caption. Then, again, I stopped off in the middle of the day. That ticket is good from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM way past the hours I was there. The meter system is truly innovative for tax collection. Maybe they can do something like that here for people who loiter on the streets. No ticket then they pay a fine. As for making prostitution legal here this country is so conservative it will never happen around here. And that is the way corrupt politicians and police like it. If something is legal there is no bribes involved. And no freebies for cops at Asian massage parlors in midtown Manhattan.

How tempting this idea is to the many cash strapped places in the world, not just America...Now street walkers can justly demand their rights, such as protection from criminals, while they are on the job...
