I'm in the process of buying a home right now & just had the inspection done. Closing isn't til December so I have plenty of time but I'm trying to decide on whether to get home insurance through Geico to pair with my auto insurance or go with a company like State Farm or AllState. Who do you guys have your premiums through? Any recommendations on coverage types or options that I should consider?

sometimes it benefits you to have all of your properties under one umbrella, they give you discounts when you do.

hell i still have my ex-wife car and insurance under my plan, we both win.

I have state farm

I went with my auto insurance (state farm) initially. But I switched it up to which ever major insurer is offering the lowest cost for the same coverage.

Don't be afraid to shop around annually. Insurance seems to increase for no Damn reason.

Traveler's. I started out paired with my auto insurance and stayed that way for a few years, but separating them proved to be less expensive.

GEICO doesn't do their own Homeowner's Insurance, they send it through third party affiliates (Liberty Mutual, Travelers, etc..). You'll get a bundled discount but you'd have to deal with two different companies in handling your policies.

State Farm and Allstate, depending on your location, are my tops due to the many different coverages and endorsements you can get on your home to make sure you're fully protected (you'll pay for it in premiums, however.). Depending on your location in Raleigh, the square footage, the building composition, your personal property, if you have pets, trees on your property, if you have an attached or detached garage..you'd need to provide specs if you're trying to get detailed advice. I'm a licensed P&C agent for NC btw.

I have a home in Carrboro, I have Liberty Mutual. I would highly advise you to get insurance. Most lenders will require you have home owners insurance so you may want to check with them.

My suggestion is to shop prices. I was with Allstate on my previous home, they were cheaper and covered everything with cushion above the replacement of your home. Back then, USAA wanted every little detail about my crib, costs more and was a nuisance. I would of used them cause been a member since 88, banking and auto has always been with them.

But since buying a brand new home, checked with Allstate, which happened to be more, then checked with USAA and was cheaper, they were more thorough coverage and a lot easier to deal with.

Not to rub it in for those that can't join USAA, but hands down the best company for just about everything financial to deal with customer service-wise.

Have to shop different companies in your area for the best rates and what they cover and look at their customer service record just in case you ever run into a crisis.

I trust state farm...not saying it's necessarily better...but it's who my pops used and I've used for some time now so from experience that's who I'd go w/

amica mutual house/car.... usaa wanted higher premiums for my home and cars....in fact i actually receive residual checks from amica so my insurance is even lower....but i use usaa for my flood insurance...amica for life!!...and no usaa is not always the best when it comes to premiums...i recieve top teir customer support..... and have had no problems when i had to file various claims with amica...theyre just very picky when it comes to who they insure...plus they are tops in the annual JD power ratings survey

USAA has been good to me for the last 15 years.

Whatever company you decide on, please, please, please ask them about "Flood Insurance" and "Excess Flood Insurance" regardless of whether you will be in a Flood Zone or not.

Here's a link about Excess Flood Insurance:
http://www.houselogic.com/home-advi...t-you-need-know-about-excess-flood-insurance/

I've got family in South Carolina that are currently finding out the unfortunate way that they should have spent a couple of extra dollars per month on flood insurance.

They (Flood and Excess Flood Insurance) saved my ass in NOLA when the levees broke.

Lastly, congrats on your soon to be home acquisition.

i live in a apartment sooooo...well i do have renters insurance

Renters insurance is a must. Too many folks become assed out when a fire or something destroys the apartment complex. Shit, $100 per year may seem like a waste until you need it.

My boy fresh out of college moved to Miami and had his apartment broken into. Took all his electronics. No insurance... :smh:

Just call around. I also suggest that you get all your insurance needs from one company and you will get a multi policy discount. They will also sell you a low cost life insurance policy too, which I recommend.

Kemper insurance

My bad I just hate American Home Shields shiesty asses any suggestions?

Old Republic Home Warranty. They've have honored every service call I've ever filed a claim for. They installed a brand new $3000 AC unit last year.

This!

Especially for auto insurance. Some people keep their policy with the same company for years or decades. Meanwhile their vehicle depreciates over time....so in some instances if you are a good driver your rates should not go up or stay the same for a depreciating vehicle. If you were to shop around, then you would get quoted at a lower rate.

It trips me out how some people pay the same premium price on a car that they purchased brand new 7 years ago which now has over 100,000 miles on it and think that they are winning.

Shop around, if your driving record is straight!

Good advice but the value of the car is not tied to the comprehensive portion of the policy, the risk remains the same in the liability portion, but yes, the premium should reduce a little.

State Farm has always done well by me.
DO NOT FUCK WITH STATE FARM !
They will make you very sorry if anything ever happens :smh:
Car Home or otherwise.

Stop what you're doing. I have Nationwide, not only are they the cheapest I could find but they covered me when the toilet upstairs wouldn't stop running, flooded the whole upstairs in the middle of the night. I even got a couple of upgrades and cash leftover and when it was done I got the remaining 10% of my claim sent to me. $1,000 deductible.

These people are beautiful. I want a wife like this company.

Thanks for all the info. This will be my first home so I wanna do things right.
