Cheney: 'We will not allow Iran' to have nukes

Vice president warns U.S. is prepared to act if regime continues on course

The United States and other nations will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

“Our country, and the entire international community, cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest ambitions,” Cheney said in a speech to the Washington Institute for Near East Studies.

He said Iran’s efforts to pursue technology that would allow it to build a nuclear weapon are obvious and that “the regime continues to practice delay and deceit in an obvious effort to buy time.”

If Iran continues on its current course, Cheney said the U.S. and other nations are prepared to take action. The vice president made no specific reference to military action.

“We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

The U.S. and some allies accuse Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and have demanded it halt uranium enrichment, an important step in the production of atomic weapons. Oil-rich Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes including generating electricity.

Fears of World War III
At a news conference Wednesday, President Bush said suggested that if Iran obtained nuclear weapons, it could lead to a new world war.

“I’ve told people that if you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them (Iran) from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon,” Bush said.

Bush’s spokeswoman later said the president was making not making any war plans but rather “a rhetorical point.”

You know the sad part is that this administration is now comfortable enough with how laxed Congress is that they are throwing "WWIII" around as an acceptable phrase in conversation.

So FN sad...

Looks like the puppetmaster is up to his old tricks again. It almost seems as if they bastards wont be satified until we are fighting a war on three fronts. I believe the UN Inspector or the IAEA, said nuclear program was for energy purposes and the inspections did not prove anything more.

What's new is that Cheney is so unequivocally and publicly forceful about this. Hillary and the DLC have been giving Cheney and the Hawks the proverbial rope all year to hang themselves. The excuses for remaining in Iraq have just about been used up. With us being bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan and Putin aligning Russia with Iran, tough talk is all we currently have, short of the nuclear option. I wouldn’t sell Cheney short. The spineless congress won’t stand up to him.

This is the same position the Administration has been taking since forever. Not saying what kind of action will be taken (diplomatic-sanctions or military); while pursuing diplomatic channels and the U.N., and, at the same time, maintaining a ramped-up military posture.

Does Cheney's words represent a shift from that policy ???

This is bullshit. This empire would try to conquer Iran whether they were trying to acquire nukes or not. The whole nuclear issue is merely a smokescreen.

At the risk of sounding like I'm defending the Bush Administration (I'm not) -- but trying to look at this whole situation realistically, your statement regarding conquering Iran is absurd. Conquering would require massive troops in excess of the Iraq invasion force. With the present deployment in Iraq and the other deployments around the world, where would such an invasion force come from? If we can''t pacify Iraq; we couldn't pacify Iran. I don't think anyone, not even George Bush, would attempt such a thing at this time. I don't deny that they 'might' want to 'conquer Iraq'; but realistically, its just not likely.

By conquer I mean gaining strategic control of strategic of their oil resources and destabilizing the country.

Iraq was pacified before we invaded. Now we're about to watch as another country is pillaged.

people really need to keep track of this issue. they've actually been pushing pretty hard for this Iran shit.

and theyve actually switched they're strategy because this "iran is developing nukes" shit was not getting any traction.

NOw they're saying that Iran is funding the shias AND sunnies and that thats the reason why US troops cant pull out of iraq.

The "reasons" will shift (Axis of Evil, sending IED's, Terrorist gaurd unit, nukes) but the mission is the same. NOw of the lies stick, bbut the Congress is inept and the people are sheep. There is NO current nuclear threat from Iran (see video).
Sunni's (SAUDI backed) have killed more soildiers than IED's, the list goes on...

yeah ^^^ but what i was trying to say is that its not very probably that Iran is funding both sides (shia's AND sunnis) they HATE the sunnis. the sunnis and shias hate each other more than they hate america.

but yeah, not to mention most al qaeda terrorist in iraq actually come from, and are trained, in saudi arabia.
